' (c1.-2so 44) v1 Claim.
My present invention is a-mobile workbench and it isthe-primaryobject of the invention to provide a work bench which may rigidlysupport a relatively heavy shop machine by means of a supporting base adapted to rest upon the floor and the base being providedwith vertically movable wheels adapted to raise one end of the bench and permit it to be moved in similar manner as a wheelbarrow.
Another object of the invention lies in the provision of spaced levers pivotally secured to the base and operably connected to the wheels at their inner ends so that when the outer ends of the levers are tilted upwardly, the wheels are lowered thereby and raise one end of the bench while the other end is carried by the levers.
Another object of the invention lies in the provision of a mobile work bench having retractible supporting wheels which are operated by levers having telescopic sections for lengthening the levers.
Another object of the invention lies in the provision of means for rendering a work bench mobile and which is very inexpensive and easily manufactured and assembled.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a work bench embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the inner end. of one lever and its companion reciprocating leg,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical cross section taken transversely of the bench and showing an end portion of the lever pivoting shaft and its bearing, and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the invention applied to a work bench.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, I have shown a work bench 5 as having a fiat bench top or working surface 6 supported by a base 1 comprising supporting legs 8 connected at their upper ends with horizontally extending supporting boards forming a rectangular collar 9. Downwardly spaced from the top 6 I have shown a horizontal shelf it which serves to brace the legs 8.
Vertically disposed mounting boards I I are secured at each side of the bench to the collar 9 and shelf ill respectively at upper and lower ends of the boards ll. These boards are spaced from .2 th Il itudinal;centcr vof. thebenchztowardhne .endancl .areopposed toeach other transversely of. the .bench. .Spaced. roller bearings v.Lil arc;.secured to boards. inaxial alisnmentbymsmns oflagscrews. or bolts I 3 and, a rotatable shaft ilfl isbearinged in .thepbearings and has,- its. end.portions extending through axially aligned apertures l4 formed through the boards II.
The end portions of the shaft l 4 are squared at I5 to receive the cooperating square apertures [6 in levers 20 and an axial socket I1 is drilled and tapped in the end of the square portion I 5 to receive cap screw l8 for securing the levers 20 upon the ends l5 of shaft H.
The inner end of each lever is flattened to form ears 23 and a longitudinally extending slot 24 is formed therein. These fiat ears 23 each extend between two spaced upstanding cars 25 which form a part of a U-shaped bracket 26 secured to the upper end of a verticaly reciprocable leg 21, one on each side of the table adjacent the end legs, and sleeves 28 are secured vertically to the end legs 8 and encircle the reciprocable legs 21. A yoke 29 is secured to the lower end of each reciprocable leg 21 and a Wheel 30 is rotatably carried thereby.
The U-shaped bracket 26 has aligned openings in its ears 25 and a bolt 31 is passed through these openings and secured as by a nut or riveting. A sleeve 38 is rotatably disposed over the bolt 31 and constitutes a roller for cooperating with the longitudinal slot 24 of ear 23.
Secured to the base 1 of the bench adjacent the end opposed to the wheels 3i! I have provided keepers 3| which limit the extreme positions of the free end of vertically tiltable levers 20, and resilient latches 32 are carried on this end to secure the levers in the raised position. A cable 33 unites the latches and is positioned to be pressed by the knee of the operator to withdraw the latches and permit the levers to be lowered, thus raising the wheels and resting the bench upon its base 1. p
Figure 4 reveals a modified form of my invention which uses the rotatable bar l4 pivotally mounting levers 34 which terminate at their inner ends in a downward bend forming legs 35 which carry yokes 29 and wheels 30. A keeper 36 limits the movement of the leg 35 and, of course, the levers 34. Extensible sections 2i are provided for the levers 3A and lifting pressure on the levers free ends will cause the wheels to assume the dotted position and lift one end of the bench while the operator lifts the opposite end by means of the levers.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a work bench having legs and a collar supporting a bench top, the means for mobilizing the bench, comprising axially aligned horizontally spaced vertically movable wheels, vertically disposed reciprocable legs rotatably carrying said wheels, sleeves secured to said bench and constituting bearings through which said reciprocable legs pass, U -shaped brackets on the upper end of said legs and having transversely aligned bolt receiving openings in the ears thereof, levers on each side of the bench and rigidly secured on the end portions of a transversely extending shaft, said shaft being rotatably mounted in bearings carried by said bench and disposed parallel with the common axis of said wheels, ears on the inner end of said levers and disposed intermediate the ears of said U-shaped bracket, a longitudinally extending slot through each said lever ear and communicating with said bolt receiving openings, bolts extending through said aligned openings and slot and secured therein, a sleeve on each bolt and extending through said slot and constituting a roller, extensible sections telescopcd in said levers, keepers carried by the bench and adapted to limit the vertical tilting movement of said levers, and latches on the bench and adapted to releasably secure the outer ends of said levers in the raised position whereby said wheels are secured in the lowered position to support one end of said bench.
