Patented Mar. 9, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EMBALMERS COSMETIC WAX DISPEN SING INSTRUMENT 4 Claims.

The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in instruments for containing and forcibly dispensing semi-solid ma terials or preparations and has more particular reference to what may be called an art pencil, that is, a simple and practical instrumentality which, though usable in other lines of endeavor, is expressly adapted for use in connection with post mortem Cosmetology practices.

Classied more specifically, the invention has to do with a novel instrument or so-called art pencil expressly adapted for use as part of the equipment of an embalmer or other licensed person having occasion to practice the requirements of post mortem Cosmetology and the restorative arts, this because the instrument contains and aptly dispenses a fine thread of semi-solid cosmetic Wax and promotes handy and reliable application of the same to regions of the face, the lips and eyelids, for example, ordinarily diilicult to cope with.

Quite often, aday or two after embalming a cadaver, there may be a parting of the eyelids and the lips because of dehydration, post mortem examinations and other post mortem conditions.

This instrument will dispense just the proper amount of Wax to such opened areas and it is then a simple matter to form the Wax with a lip brush or modeling instrument to the natural contours of the lips and eyelids. ment is of great value to the embalmer in dis-- pensing the proper amount of wax to surface areas after maior features have been rebuilt with a spatula and heavy Wax in accidental cases and those that require major restorative work. It Will dispense its Wax to the rough edges and Waves in the surface that result from the spatula and will enable the embalmer to brush the Wax out in these areas for an even natural surface. This instrument is of great value in creating wrinkles in the eyelids, especially if tissue has been removed in post mortem derma-surgery. In doing delicate restorative work, the proper technique in using a spatula, which at the present time is the accepted method of applying post mortem wax, is very difficult to master and all students and most licensed embalmers who do not have frequent occasion to do this type of art have difficulty in getting the Wax Where they need and want it. This instrument will allow them to put the wax where they Want and need it and then it is a simple matter to smooth it into the proper contour by the use of a small lip brush or modeling instrument.

Sometimes it is necessary to add cream to obtain this consistency. It is then applied to the affected area with a spatula. rlhis process requires much time and skill and as a result many cosmetic defects that should and could be corrected easily are permitted to slip by.

A general objective of the invention isv to provide an instrumentality having the stated facilities. one which is structurally distinct, unique in its mode of handling and WaxH application and in which manufacturers and users will find their essential requirements and needs fully met and effectually available.

A further and more specic object is to provide an instrumentality as stated which is characterized by a barrel, axially bored material vdispensing head means mounted on the dischargev end of the barrelgsaid head means having fingeraccomrnodating grips or equivalent shoulders providing retention surfaces for the index and,y middle iinger, a material container which is lo-v cated in the barrel and is in communication with the bore in the head means, and manually actu-l able or manipulable force-feed means which is thumb controlled and carried by the barrel and includes a plunger reciprocable in said container for forcibly ejecting the material from the container and dispensing the same by Way of the head means, the thumb control means being adjacent to the Ihead means so that the device functions like a miniature force-feed dispensing.

insertable and removable cartridge comprising an elongated cylinder open and screw-threaded at one end, the other end having an inturned lateral annular piston-accommodating and retaining flange, a piston arranged in the lastnamed end portion and abutting said flange, said piston having a rod connecting socket, and a charge of dispensable material packed and lilling said cylinder and retaining said piston in place.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A material containing and dispensing device comprising a barrel having means at its discharge end for dispensing material of a predetermined kind, said barrel having a keyway adjacent said means, a material containing cylinder mounted axially in said barrel, a piston operable in said cylinder, a reciprocable rod operatively connected at one end to said piston, a friction-clutching Washer encircling a portion of said rod, a manually actuable thumb-piece having a key slidably keyed in said keyway, an operating member in said barrel secured at one end to said thumbpiece and hingedly connected at its opposite end to said washer for canting the latter into frictionclutching relation with said rod, and a ball and socket connection between said rod and piston.

2. A material containing and dispensing device comprising a barrel having means at its discharge end for dispensing material of a predetermined kind, said barrel having a keyway adjacent said means, a material containing cylinder mounted axially in said barrel, a piston operable in said cylinder, a reciprocable rod operatively connected at one end to said piston, a friction-clutching washer encircling a portion of said rod, a manually actuable thumb-piece having a key slidably keyed in said keyway, an operating member in said barrel secured at one end to said thumbpiece and hingedly connected at its opposite end to said washer for canting the latter into frictionclutching relation with said rod, a second washer resting atop said cylinder, a third washer fixed to and extending at right angles from said operating member, said washers being in alignment with each other and said rod operating therethrough, a rst coil spring surrounding said rod and interposed between said second and third washers, a second coil spring also surrounding said rod and interposed between said rst and second-named washers, and a sheath carried by said barrel and enclosing said washers, springs and portions of said rod and operating member.

3. An embalmers cosmetic wax dispensing pencil useful in post mortem cosmetology practices comprising a linearly straight elongate barrel open and internally screw threaded at its for- Ward end and provided in one side adjacent said forward end with a slot providing a keyway, head means embodying a fitting having a neck screw CAB threaded and screwed into the cooperating endof said barrel, said neck being internally screw threaded, said head means having iinger retaining shoulder means and nger accommodating recess means, a readily applicable and removable elongated cylinder open and screw threaded at one end, the screw threaded end of said cylinder being screwed into the internal screw threads of the stated neck, a piston mounted for reciprocation in said cylinder, said piston having a rod with one end operatively connected to the piston, an externally disposed manually actuatable thumb-piece having a key slidably keyed in said slot, an operating member on the interior of the f barrel and interposed between the barrel and the cylinder and having one end connected with said thumb-piece, the opposite end projecting beyond the adjacent end of said cylinder and being opposed in spaced parallelism to said rod, a friction-clutching washer encircling a portion of said rod and hingedly joined to an adjacent end portion of said operating member, and spring means surrounding the rod and interposed between the cylinder and said washer.

4. An embalmers cosmetic wax dispensing pencil useful in post mortem cosmetology practices comprising a barrel having means at its discharge end for dispensing material of a predeterminedkind, said barrel having a keyway adjacent said means, a material containing cylinder arranged axially in said barrel and having one end detachably joined with said dispensing means, a piston operable in said cylinder, a reciprocable rod operatively connected at one end to said piston and having its opposite end projecting beyond the cylinder and barrel, a manually actuatable thumb-piece having a key slidably mounted in said keyway, an elongated transversely curved operating member interposed between said cylinder and barrel and having one end joined with said key and the opposite end projecting well beyond the corresponding end of said cylinder and paralleling said piston rod, a friction-clutching washer encircling a portion of said rod and hingedly attached to an adjacent free end portion of said operating member, and spring means encircling said rod and cooperating with said washer.
