2 Claims.. (01. 1680) This invention relates to improvements in door spring mounting brackets, and more particularly to door spring mounting brackets wherein the spring is held a spaced distance from the door facing during the opening and closing of the door.
Various spring mounting brackets have been proposed heretofore, but these, for the most part, have been complex in construction, diflicult to use, or likely to deface the door and the door facing.
The present invention is simple in construction, easy to install and to remove, light in weight and positive in operation.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a door spring bracket that will allow the door upon which it is used to be opened more than ninety degrees without the spring cutting or sawing into the edge of the door.
Another object of this invention is to provide a door spring bracket that will give a hard initial pull of the spring to the door, with the pull decreasing as the door approaches the closing.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a door spring bracket' that may be readily reversed so as to be adaptable for use either on a left hand or a right hand opening door.
An embodiment of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the device embodying the invention installed on a door, with the door and facing thereof shown in section; and with one position of the door shown in dashed outline; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device embodying the invention detached from the door.
With more detailed reference to the drawing, the numeral l designates a door facing on which a bracket 2 is secured by means of screws 3. A rod 4 passes through each of the holes 5 which are provided in bracket 2. Each rod 4 extends outward approximately parallel with the doors D and S, when the doors are in closed position.
An arm 6 is interconnected with each rod 4 by loops 1 and 8, so as to form an acute angle between rod 4 and arm 6 when the rod 4 is approximately in parallel relation with the door D.
A bracket 9 secures the inturned inner ends of each arm 6 to the doors. Each of the brackets 9 is preferably fastened to the respective door D or S by means of screws I l, near the hinged edge of the respective door.
Connected to each of the loops 1 is an eye l3 to which a spring [4 is secured. The springs l4 extend along the doors D and S, and are anchored to the doors by means of eyes l5.
It is to be noted, as shown in Fig. 1, that our device constitutes a dual unit for closing two doors that may be in a single opening, such as a door and a screen or a door and a storm door. The mechanism that is attached to the bracket 2 will protrude outward at least the thickness of the door and the two units will not interfere with each other in opening or closing either of the doors.
Operation In the operation of the device, when the door S is opened, as indicated in dashed outline in Fig. l, the arm 6 will be caused to swing toward the door facing l and to protrude outward to increase the tension on the spring [4. At the same time the inner end of the spring l4 will be swung away from the door, until the door swings open beyond ninety degrees of its travel. As the door passes beyond the ninety degree open position, the arm 6 maintains the rod 4 and spring [4 a spaced distance outward from the hinged edgeof the door, which enables the door to swing through a substantial arc beyond the ninety degree opening.
It is to be noted that when the open door is first released the pull of the spring is quite hard, but as the door closes the tension of the spring becomes less, therefore the door is prevented from closing with a sharp bang.
It is to be further noted that at no time during the opening or closing of the door, does the spring come into contact with the door, thus the door cannot be defaced by the spring, as has been true heretofore with door springs used without a bracket.
When the device is installed on a pair of doors, that is a door and a screen or storm door, as the case may be, which are in the same opening, the bracket 2 is installed on the common door facing I. The bracket 2 has rods 4 pivoted thereto, which rods 4 extend outwardly therefrom in substantially parallel relation to the respective doors, and each having the outer end thereof formed into a loop I, which loops lie in a vertical plane. Each of the doors D and S has an arm 6 hinged thereto by means of a closed U-portion of each arm 6 which is secured to the respective door. The outer end of each arm 6 terminates in a loop 1, which loops are in a horizontal plane. The terminal loop 8 of each rod 4 engages in the terminal loop I of the corresponding arm 6 to form a pivot joint. The length of each rod 4 is greater than twice the thickness of the respective door, wherefore, each door may swing outward without the respective While the invention has been illustrated arid bracket at an extreme open position of said door for swinging said door inward to closed position.
