  • The" rod or pin I7 is threaded into the boss I4, and rotatably mounted on this pin is a reel for holding the supply roll of tape ll, this reel comprising in this instance a disk 13 and a hub It.
  • This reel may be held in place by a spring 29 disposed in a recess 2! in the hub I9, the spring being held under compression by the nut 22 threaded on the pin ii, and thus applying friction to the reel to resist rotation thereof and prevent backlash at the end of a dispensing operation.
  • the hub I 9 is received in the opening in the spool 24 (Fig. 1) which holds the supply roll of tape, and is designed to fit snugly within this spool.

It will be noted, particularly from Figs.

It will be seen from Fig. 1, for example, that the lower pin 49 supports the guard member in the position shown and if the same were not present the guard member would drop downwardly upon the part 35 of the stripper and expose the edge of the knife.
  • Figs. land 7. The normal or rest position of the parts of the device is shown in Figs. land 7. It will be noted that the tape projects between the rollers 29 and 31 so that a free end is presented to be grasped by the operator. • the operator grasps the free end 28 of the tape and draws it from the roll.
  • the tape is moved upwardly toward the severing edge 40.
  • This movement through contact of the roller 31 with the surface of the tape, eifects movement of the stripper member from the position of Fig. l to that shown in Fig. 3.
  • Due to the hinged connection of the guard 44 with the stripper member the rear end of the guard member is likewise moved rearwardly and upwardly, thus causing the guard member to move from its operative position, shown in Fig. l, to a retracted or inoperative position, shown in Fig. 3. It will be seen that.
  • the tape may be drawn over the sharp edge 40 of the severing blade and severed.

  • the movement of the guard member will be guided by the pins 48 and 49 so that it will be moved to a position in front of the sharp edge id of the severing blade.
  • the stripping roller 37 will cause the tape to be stripped from the severing blade and moved downwardly into contact with the roller 29. adjusted" rotatafile. position relativelyto th'e standard. The" rod or pin I7 is threaded into the boss I4, and rotatably mounted on this pin is a reel for holding the supply roll of tape ll, this reel comprising in this instance a disk 13 and a hub It. This reel may be held in place by a spring 29 disposed in a recess 2! in the hub I9, the spring being held under compression by the nut 22 threaded on the pin ii, and thus applying friction to the reel to resist rotation thereof and prevent backlash at the end of a dispensing operation.
The hub I 9 is received in the opening in the spool 24 (Fig. 1) which holds the supply roll of tape, and is designed to fit snugly within this spool. However, the fit is sometimes sufiiciently loose so that, as the tape is pulled from the roll and the latter rotated thereby, there will be some tendency for the supply roll of tape to turn relatively to the hub 19 and, in that event, the spool is apt to work off the hub, that is, to gradually move in a direction away from the disk I 8 so that it may not be properly aligned with the mechanism of the dispenser. It will be noted, particularly from Figs. 3 and 6, that the hub or core I9 is knurled on its peripheral surface, as at 25, these knurlings being disposed spirally and given a lead in the proper direction so that if there is any rotation between the spool 24 and the core or hub [9, the spool will tend to move toward the disk 8. In other words, any rotation of the spool on the hub will cause the spool to screw onto the core instead of screwing oiT of the core. This maintains the supply spool against the disk l8 and, therefore, in proper alignment with the rest of the mechanism regardless of whether there is a loose or tight fit of the spool upon the hub.
The front wall of thecase I2 is provided with an opening 21 through which the free end 28 of the tape is adapted to be pulled, and, adjacent the lower end of this opening, is mounted a roller 29 adapted to engage the tacky side of the tape so that a free end will protrude from the case to be grasped by the operator, as shown in Fig. 1.
Mounted adjacent the opening 2'! and adapted to engage the non-tacky side of the tape is a stripper member comprising a plate 30 pivoted to the case at 3! and normally urged in a counter-clockwise direction, a shown in Fig. 1, by the spring 32. The movement of the stripper member may be limited by an arcuate slot 33 therein, which slot receives a pin 34 fixed to the case. Formed integrally with the plate-like member 35 and extending laterally at the upper edge thereof is a member 35 having at its forward ends depending ears 33 in which is rotatably mounted a stripping roller 31 adapted to engage the non-tacky side of the tape, the normal position of this roller when the parts are at rest being shown in Fig. 1.
Secured on the case at the upper edge of the opening 21, is a tear-01f blade 39 having a sharp front edge 40 projecting over the opening 21 so as to be in position to contact the non-tacky side of the tape after it has been drawn from the roll. This blade may be held in position by a clamping plate 4|, which clamping plate may, as shown in Fig. 4, be provided with forwardly projecting ears 42, one disposed at each side of the sharpened edge 40 of the blade 39, so as to shield the side edges of the blade. The edge of the blade, as will be noted, projects forwardly from the plate 4| between these ears so that the tape may be drawn over the sharp edge. Hinged to the laterally projecting member 35 of the stripper at the rear end thereof is a guard member 44. This guard member is of plate-like form and is curved upwardly at its forward end as shown at 45 so that in its normal position of rest shown in Figs. 1 and 7, it projects upwardly and forwardly of the sharp edge of the blade between the ears 42, effectively shielding the blade against contact by the fingers. The hinge connection between this member and the member 35, as illustrated, comprises U-shaped projecting ears 46 at each side of the member 44, which ears embrace fingers 41 at the rear edge of the plate 35.
The intermediate portion of the guard member 44 is disposed between upper and lower pins 48 and 49, the pins being spaced to form between them a slot to receive the guard member and to act as guide for the guard member when it is moved from an operative to an inoperative or retracted position by movement of the stripper part 35. It will be seen from Fig. 1, for example, that the lower pin 49 supports the guard member in the position shown and if the same were not present the guard member would drop downwardly upon the part 35 of the stripper and expose the edge of the knife.
The normal or rest position of the parts of the device is shown in Figs. land 7. It will be noted that the tape projects between the rollers 29 and 31 so that a free end is presented to be grasped by the operator. While the roller 3! may not be in contact with the upper or non-tacky surface of the tape it will preferably be sufficiently close to the roller 29 in this position so that when the tape is stripped from the, severing blade, as-
will be hereinafter explained, it will be urged downwardly into contact with the roller 29 so that this free end will always be presented to the user.
In using the machine, the operator grasps the free end 28 of the tape and draws it from the roll. When a suiiicient quantity of tape has been unwound, the tape is moved upwardly toward the severing edge 40. This movement, through contact of the roller 31 with the surface of the tape, eifects movement of the stripper member from the position of Fig. l to that shown in Fig. 3. Due to the hinged connection of the guard 44 with the stripper member, the rear end of the guard member is likewise moved rearwardly and upwardly, thus causing the guard member to move from its operative position, shown in Fig. l, to a retracted or inoperative position, shown in Fig. 3. It will be seen that.
in this position of the parts, as shown in Fig.3, the tape may be drawn over the sharp edge 40 of the severing blade and severed.
Thereafter, the spring 32 will return the stripper member from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. l, and, likewise, the guard member will again be moved forwardly by the movement of the stripper. The movement of the guard member will be guided by the pins 48 and 49 so that it will be moved to a position in front of the sharp edge id of the severing blade. The stripping roller 37 will cause the tape to be stripped from the severing blade and moved downwardly into contact with the roller 29. It will be noted that the roller 3! contacts the tape at a substantial distance rearwardly of the line of severance so that a free end will project forwardly of the rollers 29 and 31. i
