SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,000, dated November '7, 1882,

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM M. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dixon, in the county ot' Lec and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paste-Distributers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, suchV as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class ot' pastedistributers used more particularly for -pasting together the various pages of a newspaper or pamphlet; and it consists essentially of4 a box ot' any desired shape and materiah-having at or near the center of the bottom ofsaid box a grooved wheel to distribute where desired the paste or preparation to be used in the op-4 eration ot' pasting paper.

B is a wheel, of any material desired, journaled through its center to the bottom ot' the box A, and revolving half or nearly half ot' its diameter through a slot, c, inA the bottom ofthe box A. The slot c is flanked on each side,inside the box, with the horizontalgrooves d. d, and these grooves are packed with rubber packing e e, the edges of which packing are made to fit up snugly against the sides ofthe wheel B to prevent the paste from discharging itself elsewhere than as designed. The slot in the bottom ofthe box is made longer than the diameter ot' the wheel, and extends forward of the rim ot' the wheel, where it is provided with a gate, j', in front of the wheel, working in ways ou the outside of the bottom of the box A, to shut ofI" or regulatethe feed of the paste, to the wheel B. The wheel B has formed aroundits entire rim the groove h, which serves to carry the paste from the box A and distribute it evenly and continuously on the paper where desired as the machine is drawn over the line of the pasting.
The groove h in the wheel B may be filled or nearly illed up with a rubber or other elastic band. i, which is sometimes found to aid in the proper distribution of the paste. When this band is used in the groove ot' the wheel the gatef may be adjusted to regulate the feed as desired. The groove hin the revolution of the wheel is of a suioient size to carry to the surface of the paper the proper quantity ot paste.
The box A is also provided with the handle H for convenience in using and guiding the same.
In operation I firstclose the gate f in the bottom of the box A, then till the box with paste, regulate the flow of paste with the gate fso as to distribute the amount of paste desired. Then, by means ofthe handle H, I draw the machine over the surface or part thereof to be pasted, and tbe revolution of the wheel B, where it comes in contact with the paper, leaves thereon the amount of paste desired. Upon tbe sheet so pasted I place another sheet and to it apply the paste in the same manner, and' so on until the paper or pamphletis made up.
I Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
As a portable hand implement, a. paste-distributer consisting Vot the box A, handle H, K
and wheel B, in combination, the wheel B being provided with a groove, h, and the box A being provided with the gate f and rubber packing or wipers e e, substantially as shown, and for the purpose named.
