. l v The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in anchors and more particularly to an anti-fouling anchor embodying means to easily and quickly release the anchor from a submerged obstruction with which the flukes of the anchor are engaged and tending to prevent hoisting of the anchor by ordinary means.
An important object of the invention is to provide means for releasing the anchor by a quick jerking movement of the anchor rope.
Another object is to provide an anti-fouling anchor releasing attachment which may be easily and quickly attached to various types of anchors without necessitating any changes or alterations in the construction thereof.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efl'icient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the releasing attachment in position during normal use of the anchor.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the releasing attachment.
Figures 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3-3 and 44 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a side elevational view showing the attachment in position for releasing the anchor from a submerged obstruction.
Figure 6 is an enlarged group side elevational view of the releasing attachment in released position.
Figure '7 is a side elevational View showing the releasing jaws engaged with the head.
Figure 8 is a perspective view illustrating the invention attached to a grappling type anchor.
Referring now to the drawings in detail and first with respect to the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 7 inclusive, the numeral 5 designates a pair of arcuate jaws at the free ends of a pair of resilient arms 6 which are united at their other ends to provide a substantial U- shaped clip. An adjusting bolt 1 connects the arms 6 to each other between their inner and outer ends with a nut 8 threaded on the outer end of the bolt and a coiled spring 9 positioned on the bolt between the nut and the adjacent arm.
1 Claim; (01. 114-207) A substantially pear shaped head III is formed with an annular flange II at its inner end to provide an annular groove l2 between the flange and the bulbous body of the head. A shank or rod I3 is cast or otherwise suitably carried by the flange H to project rearwardly with respect to the head, the rear end of the shank or rod l3 having a ring I l attached thereto by means of which an anchor rope l5 may be attached to the shank.
The front tapering end of the head I0 is formed with a slot It in which the bolt 1 enters when the jaws 5 are engaged in the groove 12 of the head to connect the clip to the head.
The shank of a conventional type of anchor is shown at I! and is provided with a ring l8 at its rear or upper end engaged with the inner end of the clip 6, the anchor being constructed with a pair of laterally projecting arms l9 having flukes 2!] at the outer ends thereof.
An anchor retrieving member is shown at H which may be constructed of heavy wire, cable or other suitable material shaped intermediate its ends to form a loop 22 slidably mounted on the rod or shank l3 behind the flange II, the wire passing through an opening 23 in the flange downwardly at opposite sides of the shank ll of the anchor and with the ends of the wire formed with loops 24 engaging the arms I 9 of the anchor.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 8, the shank of the anchor is shown at 25 and is formed with a plurality of rearwardly extending arcuate flukes 26. The upper or inner end of the shank is provided with a ring 21 to which the clip arms 6 are attached and the face of the anchor is formed with an eye 28. The anchor retrieving member shown at 29 is formed at each end with loops 3!] and 3|, the loop 30 being slidably positioned on the shank or rod l3 and the loop 3| being engaged in the eye 28 at the base of the anchor.
In the operation of the device, the jaws 5 of the clip arms 6 are engaged in the groove l2 of head It and with the slot l6 of the head engaged with the bolt 1 of the clip arm. The retrieving member 2| connects the shank or rod I3 to the anchor at its base portion as shown either in Figure 1 or Figure 8.
The anchor may then be used in the usual manner, the tension of the clip arms 6 being adjusted by bolt 7 and nut 8 to hold the clip arms and head Ill connected under normal conditions while raising the anchor. Should the anchor become fouled with a submerged object, a quick jerk is given the anchor rope to snap the jaws 5 free from the head and the shank II of the anchor is then released from the pulling force on the anchor rope and the pulling force is then applied directly to the base of the anchor by the retrieving member 2| so as to pull the flukes of the anchor backwardly to slide free of the obstruction.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings "it is believed "that 'a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described :a
preferred embodiment of the inventionthe same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the inuentiun as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
Releasing means for iconne'cti-ng- :ananchor shank. 170 an anchor rope comprising -.a bulbous body having means at one end attachable :to
the anchor rope and being bifurcated at its opposite end, a resilient clip having a closed end and arms straddling said body and releasably gripping the same, means on the closed end 01' the clip attachable to the anchor shaft, and a cross connection between said arms straddled by the bifurcated end of said body to prevent relative-turningo'fisafid body mideclm, saiidbody being provided with 'a' groove "in "the first named end thereof and said arms being provided with arcuate jaws engaging in said groove.
