A corresponding element is also provided on the marginal area of the other of the parts or covers that is received by each of the fastening members. With the members and elements in fitted condition, the open sides of the article are interlocked. As shown in Fig. 1, the fastening members of the folder may be a number of tabs formed on a portion of an insert 25 secured on the marginal inside surface of the cover 2!. The insert 25 may be of the same material as the cover and the parts may be secured by a glue connection at the edge of the marginal areas thereof. The slots 23 accommodating the metal fasteners extend through. both the cover 2! and the insert 25. The fastening tabs in this form of the invention are indicated at 25, 21, 23, 29 and 39 all of which are provided by the insert 25. Tab members 26 and 39 with the cover 2! provide engaging slots along the top and bottom sides of the folder shown in Fig. 1. Tab members 21, 28 and 29 provide one element of the fitting adapted to interlock the side of the receptacle or folder opposite the centerfold 22.
The corresponding fitting portion in the other of the parts or cover 29, in this instance, for the tab or fastening member 28 is provided by a slot 3!. In making this connection, the parts are folded as indicated in Fig. 2 and tab 23 is bent upwardly for insertion in the slot 3|. Figs. 3 and 4 show a connected fitting of the tab 28 and the slot 3|.
In this form of the invention, the fitting portion on the other of the parts or cover 29, in this instance, for the'slots provided by the top and bottom tabs 23 and 32 respectively include the marginal surface of one of the sides of the part and an inturned flap part designated at 32 and 33. The top inturn part 32 is provided by scoring or break lines 34, 35 in the cover 29 along which the material is broken before the fold is made and a folding line 32 to which the scoring lines extend. Line 35 is parallel to the edge of the cover and the scoring lines may extend from the corners of the cover 20 as shown so that the infold is trapezoidal in shape. "Flap 33 at the bottom of the cover is similarly formed by scoring lines 3i, 38 and fold line 39. Fig. 2 shows the flaps 32 and 33 in an inturned condition. Fig. 4 shows flaps 32, 33 and the marginal surface of the cover in a fitted position in the slots provided by the respective tab members 26 and 33, the tabs 25 and 39 overlying the respective inturned flaps 32 and 33. The fitting portion for the tabs 2?, 29 on the insert 25, is provided in this form of the invention by the triangular eni tabs 49, 4| of the respective inturn fiap parts 32 and 33. Tabs 45, 4| are inserted under the tabs 21 and 29, respectively as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
To facilitate use of the receptacle as a mailing envelope, the inner edge 42 of cover 29 may contain a glued surface as indicated- A portion of the undersurface of tabs 25, 21, 28, 29 and 39 may also contain a glued surface. When used as a portfolio or carrying case, the parts may be folded and interfitted as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Here the gluing connections are not made and flaps 32 and 33 lie over the respective tab portions 25 and 3c. The envelope is interlocked by the fastening tabs 21, 29 and 28 and the respective interfitted portions 40, 4| and the slot 3|, in this instance.
The parallel slots defined by tabs 23 and 30 of the insert 25 and the cover 2.! Q 'ate the need for the use of the fasteners 24 to secure the papers or other contents within the receptacle. The contents are then secured between the parallel top and bottom tabs 25 and 39 and the cover 2!, the top edge of the contents fitting in the slot at the top of the receptacle and the bottom edge of the contents fitting in the slot at the bottom of the receptacle. The position of a piece of paper secured in the receptacle by the tabs 26, 39 is indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 show a modification of the invention in which the receptacle is particularly adapted for use as a carrying case or portfolio. As shown, the back cover is designated at 45, the front cover at 46, the centerfold at 22 and the tab fitting inturned flaps at 52 and 53. In this form of the invention, the fastening members or tabs 48, 49 and 59 are provided by arcuate openings or slots in the respective top, side and bottom marginal surfaces of the cover 45. Protruding tab 5i from cover 45 may be labeled to identify the contents of the folder. In this form of the invention, the triangular end portions 54, 5d and 55, 55 on flaps 52 and 53 provide tab or fastening members and the corresponding fitting portions therefor as indicated in Fig. 6 are slot 56 for tab 54, slot 51' for tab 54', slot 58 for tab 55 and slot 59 for tab 55. Slot 50 in cover 46 is provided to engage the tab 49. The inturned flaps 52 and 53 and the adjacent marginal surfaces of the cover 45 underlie the respective tabs 48 and 59 as clearly shown in Fig. 7 when the receptacle is in interlocked condition.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 8 to 12 inclusive, the back cover is designated at 52, the front cover at 63 and the centerfold at 64. The fitting provided by tab 49 and slot 6| is similar to that shown in Fig. 1. In this construction, the tab fastening members include two flaps B5 and 66 respectively hinged at 68 and 61 at the opposite edges of the cover part 63. The slots 23 for the fastener 24 may be provided in the flap 65 so that the papers or contents are hingedly connected to the receptacle. In ordinary use the bottom fiap 65 may provide a marker for use with the papers. Slots 69 may be provided in flap 65 to receive the end of flap 66. Slots 10 may be provided in the flap 66 to receive the end of flap 65. The receptacle may be interlocked in two different ways one of which is shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11. With this method of interlocking the receptacle, the flaps 65 and 66 extend around the outside of the cover 62, being bent as shown in Fig. Sand inserted through the parallel slots H and 12 in the cover 62. The end of the outer flap 65 threaded through slots 12, H engages in the slits 19 provided in flap 95. As shown in Fig. 12, a similar connection may be made between the parts with the flaps 95, 35 threading the slots II, 12 from the inside of the cover 62. In this arrangement the connection between the flaps 65, 66 is made within the cover 62 instead of outside of the same.
Since many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departure from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
