2 Claims. 1 This invention relates to projecting kaleidosccpic mechanisms for creating and projecting esigns, and more particularly to a machine which will create a great variety of original designs from miscellaneous articles held on a revolving support or turn table, and project the same on to a screen or window-like member in the front of the machine, and which can. be viewed by persons in front of it.
The invention is a further improvement in the apparatus as disclosed in my U. S. Patent No. 2,173,162, issued September 19, 1939.
Among the salient objects of the present invention are:
To provide an improved, simplied and more compact mechanism of the character referred to, and to provide a new means for greatly increasing the number of designs which can be created from the same objects without change thereof, and to do this by a simple adjustment of the carrier for the reflecting surfaces; to provide in a mechanism of the character referred to a carrier for a plurality f pairs of angularly related refleeting surfaces, around a common center, and
each pair being positioned at a different angle and each pair being movable into register with and undera projecting lens; to provide a simple means for supporting a lens and an angularly related reecting surface, whereby said lens and said reiiecting surface can be moved as a unit for securing accuracy; and, in general, to provide a practical, efficient and economically operated mechanism of the character referred to.
In order to fully explain the invention, I have shown it on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine embodying the invention, with a side section broken away and in section, to show the interior mechanism and arrangement thereof;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view, enlarged, taken on the line 2-2 on Fig. 1, showing the different angularly related mirrors or reflectors on a revoluble carrier; and
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, enlarged, showing the lens support, with the associated reilector, and showing the angularly related mirrors below, with a part broken away.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, my invention is housed in a box-like housing, designated as a whole 5, with door 6, in the front, and also having a window-like screen 1, positioned to receive the projected design from the mechanism within the housing.
In the bottom of said housing is a box 8 having 2 therein a reduction gear train of the usual type, for turning a turn-table 8 supported thereby, to be revolved slowly from said gear train.
Supported within said housing, is a strong spot lamp, as 9, for directing a strong light on t0 the turn-table 8', as indicated, to illuminate articles placed thereon, also as shown.
Rotatably suspended in said housing, from the top thereof in the present showing, from an upper floor I0 therein, is a shaft II, having on its lower end two spaced disc-like carrier members I2 and I3, between which are placed three pairs of angularly related mirrors, or reflecting surfaces, designated Il, I5 and I6. Mirrors I4 are shown at an angle of 22%o to each other. Mirrors I5 are shown at 30 angle, and mirrors I E are shown at a 45 angle, said mirrors being shown in section in Fig. 2, and in perspective views in Fig. 1. The supporting disc members I2 and I3, it will be noted, have corresponding angular openings therethrough, one for each pair of mirrors, as at I4', I5 and I6.
Mounted on the upper oor I0, in a slidable frame I'I, is a lens tube i8, with lenses therein, as shown in Fig. 3, said frame being slidable on a slideway indicated at I9, and being movable by its vertical member 20, through which an operating screw 2l operates, said screw being supported in an upstanding bracket member 22, with the screw extended out through the rear wall of the housing 5, and provided with a head 23 for turning it, for the purpose of moving the slidable frame I1, with the lens suspended therefrom, over the mirrors I4, I5 and IS, as clearly shown in Fig. l. Said lens I8 has an inclined reflecting surface 24 above it, as shown, supported in said slidable frame I'I, and positioned to receive from said lens and project on to the window screen 7, in the front of the housing 5, as indicated.
On the upper end of the shaft II, on top of the housing 5, is a head or knob I I with a pointer Il" thereon, whereby said carrier members I2 and I3 and the angle mirrors can be turned to different positions, to selectively position any pair of angle mirrors, I4, I 5 or IS in vertical register under the lens tube I8. Thus by simply turning said knob II, one pair of angularly related mirrors can be removed from under said lens and another pair moved into register. This simple changeof mirrors with relation to the lens tube, makes different designs from the same articles on the turn-table 8.
Thus I have provided a greatly simplified and improved device of the character shown and described and in which a plurality of pairs of angularly related mirrors can be movably supported so as to selectively be positioned in alinement with a lens tube and design-producing articles for changing the designs produced from said articles without changing the positions or arrangement of said articles.
I do not limit my invention to the details of construction and arrangement shown for illustrative and explanatory purposes, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim: y
1. In a machine for creating and projecting original designs: a housing, a support in said housing to receive separate design-producing articles thereupon, means for directing a spot light upon said articles to illuminate'them,` Va carrier supported above said articles, said carrier having mounted therein between its top and bottoma plurality of pairs ofangularly -related mirrors, the angles of the different pairs being different, and each pair forming an open-way longitudinally between its mirrors, said carrier being open above and below the spaces between the mirrors of eac-h pair, a lens above said carrier, an inclined reflecting surface supported above and movable with said lens t0. receive, projections therefrom, and, to reflect them horizontally, a screen on to which said designs are reflected, said carrier being movable to selectively position said original designs: a housing, a turn-table in said housing to receive design-producing articles thereupon, means for turning said turn-table, a spot lamp in said housing for directing a light on to said articles, a carrier revolubly supported above said turn-table and said articles, said carrier having therein a plurality of pairs of angularly related mirrors, the angle of the diierent pairs being different, and each pair forming an open-way longitudinally between its mirrors, a lens movably supported above said carrier, an inclined reecting Vsurface supported above and movable with said lens to receive projections therefrom, and to reflect them horizontally, a screen on to which said designs are reflected, said carri-er being revoluble to selectively position said pairsk of angle mirrors and the openway therebetween in alinement with said lens.
