WATERPROOF SNAPBACK WATCHCASE Filed April 27, 1953 INVENTOR. HYMAN DINSTMAN BYEAQWW ATTURA/EY Patented Jan. 12, 1954 2,665,545 WATERPROOF SNAPBACK WATCHCASE Hyman Dinstman,
New York, N. Y., assignor to I. D. Watch Case 00., Inc., New York, N. Y. Application April 27, 1953, Serial No. 351,425 6 Claims. (01. 58-90) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in waterproof watch cases.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved waterproof watch case with a readily removable back, which case can be opened and re-sealed simply by pressing the back again in place.
Another object of the present invention proposes forming the watch case with an annular body having an integral bezel and having a lower edge adapted to receive a back and a gasket sheet so that the back will be frictionally sealed in place merely by pressing it on the lower edge portion of the body over the gasket sheet.
Still further, the present invention proposes constructing the back with an upturned flange having a knife edge and constructing the body with a ledge overhanding its back receiving portion for the knife edge to bear against and sever the gasket sheet at the knife edge so that oversize gaskets may be cut to proper size and concealed from view inside the watch case.
As a further object, the present invention proposes constructing the watch case with a spring pad movement holder which will fit inside the case and hold the movement securely therein and which, in addition, will press against the gasket sheet and bias it toward the back to draw it tightly against the overlapping back flange and back receiving portion of the body.
The present invention further proposes a novel arrangement of the back flange and the back receiving portion of the body so that a thermoplastic gasket sheet will be securely held therebetween to tightly and simply seal the back to the body.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged sectional view of the watch case of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the watch case with fragments of the strap or band shown.
Fig. 3 is a bottom perspective view of the movement holding spring pad used in this watch case.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the watch case of the present invention has an annular body 15. The body l5 has an integral bezel it at its upper edge and a back receiving portion 21 at its lower edge.
The back receiving lower edge portion I1 is arcuately curved and the body l5 has on its outer 2 side a ledge portion l8 which overhangs the back receiving lower edge portion.
A back l9, preferably of stainless steel, has an annular upturned flange 20 which is of a diameter frictionally to seat on the back receiving portion ll of the annular body 15. The upturned flange 20 on the back I9 has an upper knife edge 2|.
Bezel I6 is provided with a groove 22 to receive crystal 23 and a stem receiving crown bushing 24 extends through the annular body [5 to movement 25 of the watch.
A resilient sheet gasket 26 extends across the body l5 and is frictionally secured between the annular flange 29 of the back l9 and the back receiving portion ll of the body IE to seal the back to the body. The sheet gasket may be made of thermoplastic sheeting such as Vinylite.
The movement holder 21 is a ring with an upturned outer peripheral edge and spaced downwarcly bent ears 23 projecting from its inner eripheral edge for gasket abutment.
Sheet gasket 2'6 before insertion into the case preferably are oversized so that when the back I9 is pressed on the body l5 the knife edge 2i on the nange 20 of the back bears against the gasket and the ledge portion l8 overhanging the back receiving lower edge portion ll of the body and severe the gasket at the knife edge. The excess gasket material which is sheared off is indicated in dot-dash outline at 28'.
The arcuately curved lower edge portion I! of body 15 presses the gasket sheet 26 against the inside of the upturned flange 20 of back 19 at the point of tangency and the spring pad movement holder 27 provides enough tension on the gasket 23 to insure a tight seal.
Body I5 of the watch case is also provided with strap or hand holding members 29 to which is secured the band 30.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
