2 Claims. 1
My invention relates to improvements in receptacles; especially receptacles for both shipping and displaying merchandise.
The receptacle of this invention is preferably made of flexible sheet material to enable it to be packed or stored in a collapsed state. An important object is to provide a receptacle of such construction that it can be distended or expanded when the contents thereof are to be exhibited; so as to increase the interior space ordinarily enclosed thereby and allow the merchandise therein to be more plainly seen and more easily removed by the purchaser.
A further object is to provide a receptacle with adjustable sides that can be swung outward to a predetermined extent, so as to permit the articles in the receptacle to become separated in some degree, instead of being retained in a compact array or group. In that condition, the articles which, for example, have the form of small individual packages, appear to better advantage and are more quickly sold, because a buyer may hesitate to disturb a well ordered arrangement, but will feel completely at liberty to pick out something from a more or less tumbled pile or heap.
Another object is to provide a receptacle adapted to serve for both shipping the merchandise and exposing it for sale in a shop or store; so that the merchant must necessarily use the box in which the articles are received by him when he ofiers the contents to his customers.
A still further object is to provide a box or receptacle comprising a body that incorporates all of the necessary features for expanding the body when it is opened, independent of the cover, which can thus be reserved and utilized solely as a sign or panel for such advertising matter as may be needed.
An additional object is to provide a receptacle of the kind indicated, with some of the sides so mounted and connected that they can be swung outward as required, but having parts attached to the sides to limit the outward movement and maintain the sides in their final adjusted positions. I
The nature of the improvement is fully set forth in the ensuing description, and the novel characteristics are defined in the claims. The structure illustrated is by no means the only one in which the invention can be embodied, and I reserve the right to make changes in details without departing from the main design in which the invention and the controlling principle thereof are contained. I 7
0n the drawings:
Figure 1 is a developed view of a blank of sheet material out and creased so that it can be set up in the form desired.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the blank partly folded and shaped.
Figure 3 is a transverse section along line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a top planet the finished receptacle.
Figure 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal section on the line S-6 of Figure 4.
Figure '7 is a plan view of a panel adapted to serve as a cover for the receptacle.
Figure 8 is a view, partly in section, showing how the cover or lid is attached to the body of the receptacle.
Figure 9 is a perspective view showing the receptacle in its completed state with a number of packages therein and the lid or cover turned up to expose the contents to view; and
Figure 10 is a section on the line IU-lll of Fgure 9.
The blank out of which the receptacle is made, as shown in Figures ,1 and 2 is of sheet material such as cardboard or the like, comprising a panel 5 to serve as the bottom, and elongated parts 2 to make the ends connected to opposite edges of the panel I alongtransverse creases or score lines 3. Attached to the panel I along opposite edges are additional parts 4 which make the sides of the receptacle when it is set up, the parts t joined to the panel I along creases or score lines 5. The receptacle is preferably rectangular, but the invention is not necessarily limited to such configuration.
Each of the extremities of the parts 4 carries a hinged flap 6. These flaps have terminal projections l which are triangular, and connecting webs 8 between the projections I and the parts i. The projections I and webs 8 are united to each other along creases or score lines 9; and the webs 8 are united to the extremities of the parts 4 along creases or score lines I0. The lines 9 and It converge and intersect with the score lines 3 and 5 at the corners of the bottom panel I. Thus the webs 8 also are triangular in form with the apex of each on the adjacent corner of the bottom I, and the projections I are all triangu lar but with the apex of each at the outer end of one of the score lines 9. The flaps 6 are separated from the parts 2-along lines I I which are cut through the materialfrom the outer pointedends of the projections 'I to the score lines3.
are then bent-arouri'ditfie lines 3*, l2 and I23, so
as to'fol'd up the" sections l5 against the outer faces of the flaps 6; and the sections I6 down against the inner faces of the overlapping flaps 6.
The terminal sections M of theaparts-aare then laid flat on the bottom panel I. These sections are wide enough to press against thesides i and hold the ends of the box in place, with theflaps 6 between the sections I5 and k9,; as; shown ini Figure 5.
flaps [8 are inserted within the sides 4 and ends of the receptacle.
The width of the flaps is less than the height of the sides of the box, and the distance of the shoulders 21 from the inner end 22 of the recess 2! is about equal to the distance between the upper ends of the parts 26 of the cuts and theitop edge of, the box. Whencthe cover is folded down to close tliebox it ispulledup until the shoulders 21 engage the side of the box at the adjacent ends of the cuts 26 as shown in Figure 8. The cover can then be bent along a line crossing? the inner? end 22 of the recess 2: and can be folded down to closing position. When the cover is to be lifted the flaps 20 are forced downward" until the inner end 22 of the recess In normal position, the edges H of the flaps 6 make contactwith the bottom I. See
