This invention relates to an applicator for placing reinforced gummed patches to the areas around the holes of a loose leaf sheet of paper. It is my contention that pupils and students- Would benefit from my invention which will apply reinforcing gummed patches in a. quick, neat, and sanitary manner.

The primary object of the invention is to pro vide an applicator for applying gummed patches to the areas around the perforations in a loose leaf sheet of paper which includes a moistenin element, a pressing element, a moisture reservoir and guide elements assembled together in a novel, cooperative, and simple unit.

Another object Of the invention is to provide an applicator for the purpose set forth which is susceptible to economical manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention resides in the following specification and appended claims, certain embodiments and details of construction of which are shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

Fig. 1 is an exploded isometric view of the invention;

Fig. 2 illustrates the manner of use of the invention in moistening the paper;

Fig. 3 illustrates the manner of use of the invention in pressing reinforcing gummed patches onto moistened paper;

Fig. 4 is a sectional elevational view of the invention during a moistening operation; and

Fig. 5 is a sectional elevational View of the invention during a pressing operation.

Referring more particularly to Figure 1; a member 6 which is preferably tubular but which could be of any desirable cross-sectional design, is provided with closure plugs I and 2. Each plug is equipped with an identical guide member 3 which has a projection 8 extending into a recess 9 in plugs I and/2, respectively. The tubular member 6 acts as a handle for the applicator as well as a reservoir for the moistening material, which generally will be water. The plug member I consists of a reduced area l0 which fits in sealing relationship into the interior of one end of tubular member 6.

The enlarged portion II of plug I is designed to be of the same diameter as the member 6, the surfaces thereof being flush with each other. The centrally arranged recess 9 in plug I receives the projection 8 of a guide member 3 in frictional holding relationship.

The base section I2 of plug 3 has a diameter equal to the diameter of the tube 6 and, therefore, also equai to the diameter of section it of plug I, this being for purposes of appearance.

The plug I is of a; fibrousor rubber-like liquid holding type of) material, such as a: sponge or felt. An identically formed plug 2, although preferably, but not necessarily made of an elastic material, is used. to seal. the ot; er end. of tubular member is. Plug 2 is similar to plug l provided with a recess 9 which frictionally holds a guide member 3 in an assembled relationship when the applicator is not in use. When it is desirable to add reinforcing gummed patches to looseleaf sheets of paper, either plug member I or 2 is removed from the member 6 in order to fill the same with a liquid; either plug is then replaced in sealing relationship with tubular member 6. The guide members 3 are then removed from plugs I and 2. Now, by referring to Figs. 2 through 5, the use of the applicator will become obvious.

One of the guide members J- is placed beneath a stack of loose leaf paper I3, with a projecting member 8 of guide member 3 projecting through the holes Id. The plug I is then placed over the protruding portion of projection 8 and the area 5 of the paper around the hole is is moistened when contacted by the plug i. A reinforcing gummed patch l, with its gummed side i downwardly directed, is placed over the protruding portion of projection 8 so as to contact the peviously moistened area 5 surrounding the hole id.

The tubular member 6 is then reversed, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and pressure is applied through the plug 2 to secure the reinforcing gummed patch 4 to the moistened area 5 as shown. In this way it is seen that the invention provides a neat, quick, and sanitary apparatus for applying reinforcing gummed patches to perforated loose-leaf papers.

The main purpose in providing two plugs and two guide members in the assembly is to give a moistening surface at one end of tube and a pressing surface at the other end of the tube as well as providing, through said plugs, a nonuse storage position for the guide members. However, this unit could be made with one plug and one guide member using the butt end of the liquid storage member as a pressing surface. Also, to be noted in the designing of the recessed area, the diameter thereof is slightly larger than the diameter of the guide member except at its deepest point Where the diameter of the recess is slightly less than that of the diameter of the guide member, thus effecting a loose workable action when moistening the desired area and when pressure is applied to secure the reinforcing gummed patch; eifecting a state of compactness valuable when in non-use or storage position.

I claim:

1. An applicator for aiding in the placement of reinforcing gummed patches to perforated loose-leaf sheets of paper, comprising in combination with patch receiving guide members, a reservoir member, a moisture holding plug attached to and closing one end of the reservoir, an affixing plug attached to and closing and sealing the other end of the reservoir, each of said plugs being provided with means to hold a guide member thereto during non-use periods of the applicator.

2. An applicator for aiding in the placement of reinforcing gummed patches to perforated loose leaf sheets of paper comprising in combination with a pair of patch receiving guide members, an elongated liquid holding reservoir, a plug attached to and closing one end of the reservoir, said plug being of such a material as to release moisture from the reservoir under the application of pressure, a patch afiixing plug attached to and sealing the other end of the reservoir, each of said plugs being recessed to provide aligning and storing portions cooperatively with said guide members during use and non-use periods respectively of the applicator.

An applicator for aiding in the placement of reinforcing gummed patches about the holes in a loose-leaf sheet of paper comprising in combination with a pair of patch receiving guide members, each having a fiat section and projection extending therefrom, an elongated liquid holding reservoir, a plug attached to and closing one end of the reservoir, said plug being of such a material as to release moisture from the reservoirs under the application of pressure, a patch aifixing plug attached to and sealing the other end of the reservoir, each of said plugs being recessed to provide cooperatively with a projection of a guide member, an aligning means for the applicator during use periods, and a storing means for a guide member during non-use periods of, the applicator.
