Description
Dec. 15, 1953 R. c. LOCKARD SMOKING PIPE Filed April 16, 1948 J! 2 m mo V W C m m n Y B Patented Dec. 15, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SMOKING PIPE Ronald C. Lockard, Freeport, Pa. Application April 16, 1948, Serial No. 21,432 1 Claim. (01. 131--180) This invention relates to improvements in double bowl tobacco smoking pipes, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an efiicient and cool smoking pipe of this type which is of simplified and more practical construction, wherein the tobacco present in one bowl acts as a filter for the smoke and moisture involved in the smoking of the other bowl, and in which the stem is arranged to be selectively inserted in the top of the bowl being used at the time as the filter chamber, in such a way that the filtered smoke is drawn through the stem from the upper part of such chamber rather than from the bottom therein wherein accumulation of noxious moisture otherwise naturally occurs, so that the stem remains comparatively free of noxious moisture.
Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description and accompanying drawings, wherein, for purposes of illustration only, a specific embodiment of the invention is set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through said embodiment.
Figure 2 is a top plan View thereof, and
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the stem per se.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 generally designates the body of the illustrated smoking pipe, said body being longitudinally elongated, with semi-cylindrical ends 6, 6; parallel plane sides 1, l, a fiat bottom 8, and a fiat top 9. The body 5 is formed with two longitudinally spaced similar bowls 19, I having fiat coplanar bottoms I 0', It in spaced relation to the body bottom 8, and having slightly flared upper ends it openin through the top 9. Sole communication between the bowls l0, H] is provided by a relatively small diameter smoke passage l2 formed horizontally through the Wall I3 separating the bowls and located above the lower ends of the bowls so as to leave below the passage suificient space to accommodate any expected accumulation of noxious moisture without permitting such to flow between the bowls or to be circulated between the bowls by ordinary smoking suction.
The stem generally designated [4 comprises a generally cylindrical body having a slightly tapered lower end portion 16 adapted to seat in the flared openings II, II of the bowls l9, H). The body [5 has a radial tapered projection I! on one side constituting the pipe bit and formed axially with a bore I8 terminating at its inner end in a crossed junction 19 with the upper end of the axial smoke passage 20 opening through the lower end of the body 15.
When the body I 5 is inserted in one of the bowls I0 the tobacco in the other bowl is ignited and smoke therefrom is drawn through the passage I2 into the said one bowl l0 and upwardly through the tobacco therein, then acting as a filter and moisture trap, and then through the stem passage 2!] to the bit passage l8. After the tobacco in the first bowl has been consumed, the first bowl may be refilled with tobacco and the body l5 transferred thereto and the tobacco subsisting in the other bowl may be replaced or consumed as is, the tobacco in the first bowl thereupon acting as a filter and moisture trap.
Iclaim:
A smoking pipe comprising a body including a fiat bottom, parallel spaced upstanding plane sides, and upstanding semi-cylindrical ends facing each other and connecting the plane sides together, a vertically disposed wall fixedly positioned within said body and extending transversely between said plane sides substantially centrally of the latter and subdividing said body into two tobacco containing bowls each with an open top, the open top of each bowl being flared, said wall being provided with a smoke passage extending horizontally therethrough adjacent to and spaced above said bottom and having one end in communication with one of said bowls and having the other end in communication with the other of said bowls, and a stem comprising a body having a tapered lower end portion arranged for vertical insertion in the open top of one of said bowls, a bit projecting horizontally from said stem, and passage means extending through said bit and said body and opening above the tobacco in said one bowl whereby smoking suction applied to said bit will draw smoke from ignited tobacco in said other bowl through said first mentioned passage in said wall into said one bowl and upwardly through the tobacco in said one bowl to said passage means in said bit, the open ends of said bowls being of the same flaring whereby said stem body may be inserted in either bowl.
RONALD C. LOCKARD.
