Description
RICHARD S. SCHEVENELL, F ATHENS, GEORGIA. j j y HERNIAL llIEtUSSa` Speecation of Letters Patent No. 26,623, dated December 27, 1859. i
T o all 'whom it may concern:
Be it `known that I,\RICHAED S. SCHEVE- j NELL, of Athens, in the county of Clark full, clear, and eXactdescription of the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichi Figure l, is a perspective view of a dotble truss constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2, is a vertical section taken through one of the pads.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in both figures.
My invention consists in a novel lmode of applying one or two spring pads and one or more thigh straps in combination with a belt for encircling the hips whereby great facility is afforded for adjusting the pad to the person and a truss is obtained which is very easy to wear and very effective in its operation. j j
To enable others to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
a, is the belt which is to be secured around the hips by a buckle b, and which may be of stout webbing either elastic or inelastic; and A, A, are the spring pads consisting of plates of metal of elliptical shape padded with cotton, wool or some soft substance covered with leather, silk orother suitable material and having attached to them conical spiral springs b, I).
c, @,s are two clamps, one for each pad, composed each of a piece of brassor `other metal plate folded to receive within it the belt a, and each having a screw d, passing through its open end, said screws also passing through eyes formed at the extremities of the springs b, and being furnished with nuts e, which serve to attach the pads to the clamps, to pinch the clamps closely upon the belt a, and tohold thethigh straps f,f, j j the ends of which are received; betweenthe j j open1 ends of the clamps. Thewscrews and nuts thus serve to attach boththe pads ands() thigh stra-ps to the belt.` yThejthigh straps if are furnished with bucklesgpg, by `which j they maybe adjusted tothelimbs. i 3 h, 71 are cushions for preventing the up l ,j .j per parts of the clamps `chaing thebody, l each being attached to itsrespective clamp` by a loop c', through which the clamp passes asshowninFig.2."` j j .1f W This truss may be adjustedto a person of any size that the pads willisuit `and {pads-` may be applied of a `sizeto suit any person.` The clamps may, by slackeningthe screwsl j and nuts, be moved upon` thebeltjto `adjust l i the pads at the proper distance apart; and the pads may be setatthe properanglef when the screws and nuts l are slackened.; By screwing up the nuts" tightly the'p:uisareh` secured both at the roper distanceapart and at the proper ang e.\ `To applythetruss v g when the pads are properly` adjusted, the @1i belt is strapped easily upon the hips Aandthe l thigh straps passed around thethighs and 3; buckled up to bring thepads" to fthe .proper height, the thigh straps may` bebuckled up j f without crossing as shown in Fig. 1, or may 375" be crossed, that is to say,` each thighstrapr i may be passedaround the: back "of thethigh i a to the buckle of the oppositelone. By crossj 3 l ing the thigh straps the greatest pressure of y I the pads is obtained. i 38o" What Iclaim as my invention and desire i to secure by Letters Patent is-j-ja j j j Combining oneJ` or more spring padsand one or more thigh `straps withthel belt, by; means of one or more.` clamps c, `screws d, f
and nuts e, applied substantiallyas herein Rioni). s, soHEvENELn@ y `j specified.
