Description
Dec. 8, 1953 F. D. lNFANTlNO HAIR CUTTER Filed Nov. 5, 1952 INVENTOR FRANCESCO D. INFANTINO BY ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 8, 1953 UNITED PTENT QFFICE 4 Claims.
My invention relates to a new and useful hair cutter of the type used by a person to cut or trim his own or to enable one not especially skilled in the artof hair cutting to trim or out another persons hair.
An object of the invention is to produce an exceedingly simple, effective and durable device of the character mentioned in which a safety razor blade is removably mounted in an adjustable slide travelling in tracks artially contained within a control box or body constantly open at the bot tom and also provided with an open upper end normally closed by a lid supporting the adjustable slide or razor blade container and the means for adjusting said slide, the cutting edge of the razor blade being enclosed within a wire guard having the individual elements secured to the control box, said guard being of triangular configuration to provide opposed slanting sides as guides to rest against a persons head during the hair cutting operations.
Another object of the invention is to produce a hair cutter in which both sides of the structure are identical and without lateral protuberances, other than the elements of the guard, 1,5;
whereby the device can be used on either the right or left hand sides of the head without the necessity of making any adjustments after the desired setting of the'blade is once obtained.
Another object of this invention is to provide a;
a razor blade container of unique construction including a sliding cover to allow easy access for insertion or removal of a razor blade.
A further object of the invention is to provide an index on the adjustable razor blade container whereby the adjustment of the cutting edge of the blade may be readily and easily determined without resorting to guess work.
A still further object of the present invention is to so construct the appliance that the razor blade container can be inserted and removed through the back of the device, which is normally the top, for the placement of a blade in or the removal thereof from said blade container.
With the above and other objects in View this invention consists of the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same I will describe its con struction in detail referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a hair cutter constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2--2 cf Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the razor blade container removed from the hair cutter control 2 box or body and with the cover partially withdrawn.
Fig. 4 is a further enlarged fragmentary section of the control box, cover and latch.
In carrying out the invention as herein embodied 5 represents the hollow control box or body open at the top and bottom and while the bottom is constantly open the top is normally closed by a flat lid 6 resting on the upper edges of the side and end walls of said body. The lid functions as the back of the device and is detachably held in place by suitable means such as latches 1 pivoted on the exterior of said lid and engageable with the hook-like keepers 8 formed from the upper portions of the side walls of the body, two of which are adjacent each end of said body in opposed relation. The lid has notches 5, Fig. 4, to permit said lid to pass over the keepers which then project above the lid a sufficient distance to allow the ends of the latches to pass under the inturned ends of said keepers.
On top of the lid ii is fixed a bridge 9 having a portion spaced from the outer face of said lid and between said spaced portion of the bridge opposed lid face is a nut it screwed onto the threaded stem H, attached to a razor blade holder or container !2, which stem projects through aligned holes in the lid and bridge.
The razor blade holder or container I 2 includes a plate [3 having a reverse flange Isl along its upper edge to form a track groove and inturne'd lugs 1 5 at the bottom adjacent the ends to constitute a segmental track groove. One edge of a safety razor blade I5 is inserted laterally under the flange I4 into the groove and portions of said blade slipped over the lugs and dropped into the segmental track groove. Finally a closure plate ii is slid endwise into the space between the razor blade and the flange M at the top of the holder and the lugs H5 at the bottom of said holder to clamp the razor blade in place with cutting edge exposed at the bottom of the holder.
The control box or body 5 has channel tracks M3 on the inside at the ends thereof and said. tracks are perpendicular to the lid 6. These channel tracks run from the top of the body to locations some distance below the bottom of said body in the form of extensions. The ends of blade holder slidably fit in said channel tracks and may be moved up and down by the proper manipulation of the nut ill.
Individual strand members it are formed from sections of. appropriate wire fashioned to substant ally triangular shape to constitute a guard nd the ends of the base portions thereof are fixed to opposite sides of the control box or body with acute angular portions 26 centered directly below the blade holder 42 so that when a latches 1.
blade is assembled in said holder and the latter adjusted the cutting edge will be equally spaced from both of the inclined sides of the guard. The strand members 19 arebracedcbyreinforcing wires-l9.
A handle 2| is provided at one end of the body 5 whereby the device may be used somewhat after the manner of a hair brush.
In order to assist the user of the hair cutter to adjust the blade for removing theidesired amount of hair, the blade holder or container l2 may have suitable indexmarks"22,"-such=as lines and associated numerals, thereoniior -cooperation with the lower edge of the control box orlbody' .5. ..These.index marks may.v be on any desirable portion of "the blade holder andflfor illustrative purposes only, they are shown asbeing scribedqonlthellface of 'the'closureplate l1 atone end thereof.
To assemble a razor blade 'in the. hair; cutter or replace a. dullone witha'new blade, the lid .01. cover his unfastened andthen removed from 'the.body. or control" box. .Asllheflld' islbodily lifted-the blade' holder will .be movedupwardly in the channelv .tracks"l8(and finally withdrawn therefrom. "With the blade holder. separated .from the body vor control boxthe closure plate another and the closureplate slipped intolposition. subsequentlyfthel blade holder,.with a razor blade therein, is inserted inithe channel tracks i3 and propelled forwardlyuntil .the lid 6.,is seated at which time it. is secured. in place .by the After. the ,p'arts'i have been. properly assembled the cutting'edge "of therazor blade may be adjusted relatively to. the. slantingsides of .the guard by turning. the nut it in the proper direction which will move 'saidblade Hi. towards or away from the angleZil. When the cutting edge of the blade is close to the angle 20 longer portions of .hair. will bescut from a 'personshe'ad than when saidic'utting .edgeis'Tur-ther' removed from said angle I23.
'In actual practice, after thewcu'tting edge of .the razor blade has been properly. adjusted for cutting the hair to :the desired length. either slanting side of the guard is placed againstthe scalp and drawn 'thereover causing the persons hair to enter the interstices of said guard and the hair ends cut oil leaving the remaininghair of the preselected length. After one side of the hair has been cut'the hair cutter islshifted'. to the, oppositeside. of 'thepersons head. and the other slanting side of the guard :placed against the scalp and v.the operations repeated without readjusting the cuttingy'edge of the blade. This insures that the hair on both sides of thehead will be uniform after cutting.
It is to be particularlyinoted.that the adjustments of the razor bladeholder are accomplished from the. top of the control box or body thereby eliminating the necessity .of having protruding partson'the' sides which might interfere with the proper contact ofthe, guard .with the scalp. Attention .is..also called 'to the fact-that the same cutting edge .ofthe razor blade can be utilized during one hair cutting operation without either reversing or inverting the haircutter for employment on opposite sides of the head.
Of course I .do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described as these may be varied within thescope of the appended claims without departing-from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and useful is:
