SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,955, dated October 1'7, 1882.

Be it known that I, WM. H. FULLER, of Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State ofOhio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Cane and Fan, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of a common cane or walk- IO ing-stick equipped with a fan. Fig. 2 is the same, showing the fan opened. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of section of the cane, showing how the upper end of the fan-lid is secured. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the same, show- 1 ing manner of hinging the lid thereto. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the cane, showing the manner of securing fan-lid to the cane when opened. The object of my invention is to provide a common cane or walking-stick with a fan so arranged that when the fan is not desired for use it can be folded up within the cane, as will now be more fully shown in detail.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents an ordinary cane, having in one of its faces a groove, B, of any suitable length, as shown. This groove has a lid, 0, composed of the material forming the cane, which is 0 hinged at the lower end, D, to the body of the cane in any suitable manner. The upper end has a sliding plate, E, and a knob, F, attached thereto, enabling the user to slide the end of the plate E under the shell of the cane, as shown in Fig. 3, and hold the lid tightly to the 5 cane. When the lid 0 is turned down on its hinge D, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the sliding plate E engages with a head or catch, G, and thus holds the lid open.

The fan H is composed of the plaited leaf, 4 having one side attached to the lid 0 and the other to the groove B within, at I, Fig. 6.

' It will be observed that when therefore the lid is opened on its hinges the fan spreads out, enabling the user to use the fan, while at the same time it can'be readily converted into the ordinary walking-cane.

The fan thus constructed is equally applicable to parasols, umbrellas, or other similar portable articles of use. 0

Having described myinvcntion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. A cane having on one of its faces the rectangular groove B, provided with a lid, 0, as shown, in combination with a fan, H, secured to the said lid and to the groove B within, sub stantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A fan, H, as shown, having one of its edges secured within to a groove, as shown, and its opposite edge to a hinged lid adapted to close this groove, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
