Description

Nov. 10, 1953 H. FLEISHER ETAL Filed 7, 194a INVENTOK HARRY FLEISHER BY ACO HOMER Patented Nov. 10, 1953 UNITED STATE. iii
OFFEE CHILDS SEAT Harry Fleisher, Staten Island, and Jacob Homer, Grasmere, .N. Y.
3 Claims. 1
The invention herein disclosed is a childs-seat of the type adapted to be hung over th back-of a chair, the back of automobile seat or other suohzsupport.
Special-objects of'th'e invention are to provide a seat construction which will be held securely, firmly and safely in its suspended relation and which may be quickly and easily adjusted to different desired height relations.
Other special objects of the invention are to accomplish such results in a simple, practical and inexpensive form of construction, capable of being easily taken apart or collapsed when not in use or for storage or shipment or other purposes.
Other desirable objects and the novel features through which all purposes'of'the invention are attainedare set forth or will appear in the'course oithe following specification.
The drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrates the invention as embodiedin severaldifferent forms, but it is appreciated that structure may be further modifled and changed, all within the-true-intent and scope or" the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
Fig. l in. the drawing is-a bro'ken and part sectional'side elevation of one ofthe seatsshowing it set up and ready to be hung over the back of a chair or other support;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation oi'the seat; I
Fig. 3 is a broken side elevation showing a modified form of the invention;
Fig. 4' is a broken sectional view illustrating details of the Fig. 3 form of construction;
Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of a further modified form of theinvention;
Fig. is a broken perspective detail of a further modification.
The structureshown in Figs. 1 andZ comprises a seat board I having a back board 8 hinged thereto at 8 by means of the triangular end plates is and arm rests il pivotedtothe back at E2 and the seat by means of pivot'linksit.
Th arm rests are shown as carrying a tray l t, and the whole constitutes a structure which be folded into substantially fiat condition.
This folding seat construction is supported by special suspension means shown asconsisting of a loop of spring wire or rod bent at the top to form a hook is for engagement over a chair back or the like and having spaced, substantially parallel side arms it caught in front of the hooks ill at the sides of' the back. and terminating in upwardly and outwardly angled hooks, It caught under the edge of an opening it in the plate 20 secured on the back 'ofthe back board.
The spring hanger -:iescribed is tensioned so that the side arms lttend to separate, thus to cause the hooks l 8 atithe lower ends of the same to be held outwardly in gripping engagement in the outer corners ofthe opening it in the plate 29. This outward tensioning of the side arms also causes them to remain interlocked'in the retaining hooks ll at the upper portion of the back.
This relation also prevents-the suspension hook and back from tipping, one in respect to the other, and provides the effect of a firm threepoint suspension between the support with'wliich the hook is engaged and-between the latter and the back structure. At the same time the hook can be quickly and easily'disengaged from the back by springing the side arms inward until'the outwardly angled terminals [8 can be unhooked from the opening l 9 irrthe plate To prevent" accidental collapse and release of the hook terminals, a turnbutton is shown'at 2i pivoted on the plate 2!] between the inwardly oiiset portions-22 of. the side arms. In the horizontal position this turnbutton locks the side arms in their spaced apart relation interlocked with plate 2t, whereas in the vertical position the turnbuttonpermits intended release of'hooks F8 from the plateZllI While the inwardly oiiset'end portions 22 of the side arms are preferable, enabling use of a smaller size supporting plate is :andhaving other advantages, it is contemplated-that the side arms it may be straight for their full length or, if desired, may be outwardly instead of inwardly angled at their-lowerends to give them a wider hold-on the seat structure.
To provide for certain vertical adjustment of the seat in respect to the supporting structure, the plate 26 may havea series of slots for engagement of the supporting hook, as indicated at Ma, so that the seat may be supported at a relatively higher 1evel-thanfirst illustrated.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 andd, the arched supporting. hook it": is made with straight side arms Ita spacedapart the full width of the back 8 and having upset or headed inwardly angled lower ends 58a engageable in either higher or lower keyhole slots I92), I90, in the end plates Illa.
To retain the supporting hook in vertical relation at the sides of the back, it is shown .as engaged and held between rearwardly and forwardly faced hooks 2t, at the side edges of the back, each pair of such hooks being spaced at 25 a distance greater than the diameter of the supporting hook, enabling th sides of the latter to be entered horizontally between the pairs of hooks as in Fig. 3 and then turned into vertical position with its lower ends hooked into the keyhole openings in the side plates.
This also provides a quickly removable and replaceable, safe and firm connection between the supporting hook and seat structure, adjustable for height of the seat, as required.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modification of the last described form of the invention, in which the plates Ib carrying the keyhole openings I9b, I90, are set inward in the side edges of the back on inwardly shouldered edges and the side arms of the frame rest against a back flange 21 when they are sprung behind the inwardly faced hooks 28 near the top of the back.
In all forms of the invention, after the double supporting book has been engaged with the back, the latter is firmly suspended without possibility of its tilting forwardly or rearwardly, so that no motions of the child will have any effect toward loosening the seat from the hanger.
While preferably made of spring wire or rod material, it is possible that the hanger may be made of flat strip stock or other material.
The structure, while particularly effective and practical, is relatively light in weight, takes up but little space and can be produced at low cost.
The spring arch formation of the hanger causes it to closely hug the back member and to remain interlocked therewith. The enlarged lower ends of the side arms, whether produced by bending as at IS in Figs. 1 and 2 or by upsetting as in Figs. 3 and 4, enables the hanger to be quickly and firmly caught to the back and to be as easily removed when that becomes necessary or desirable.
Fig. 6 illustrates a simplified form of the invention in which the hanger is attached to the back by engaging the side arm portions l of the same under headed detents 29 and slipping the angularly extended looped portions 30 of the same into grooves 3| in the face of the back, the end portions 32 extending angularly across to the side faces of the back and having angularly bent terminals 33 engaging in grooves 34.
This provides an integral form of quickly attachable and releasable connection between the back and hanger.
