l UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN S. JENKINS, OF LIMA, OHIO.
CHALK-LINE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,815, dated October 10, 1882.
Application filed March 28, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. JENKINS, of Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Chalker, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object ot my invention is to provide a new and improved device for chalking the chalk-lines used by carpenters, masons, dre.
The invention consists ot' a chalker formed of two cylinders provided with outer conical ends, having an aperture in the end ot' each cone, which cylinders, when united, form a casing adapted to receive pieces of chalk, through which the cord passes, whereby the line or cord will be chalked by drawing it through the casing.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specilication, in which a longitudinal sectional elevation ot' my improved chalker is shown.
Iwo short cylinders, A A', fitting into each other, have one end open, and therother ends, B B', are made conical, and the end of each cone is provided with an aperture, through which a cord or line, C, can pass. When passed into each other these two cylinders form a casing. At the bases ofthe cones B B' each cylinder A A' is provided with a projecting head, D, or equivalent, against which the ends of the cylinders rest when the cylinders are passed into each other, as shown. The cylinder A' may be provided with an external screw-thread, and the cylinder A may be provided with an internal screw-thread, in which case the two cylindersA and A' can be screwed together and securely held in position; or the said cylinders may be secured together by any suitable device. The line C having been passed through the two caps thus formed, the
casin g is filled with pieces of chalk or any suitable material for the purpose of chalking or coloring Jthe line with any desired color, and the cylinders are passed into each other. By
drawing the. line through the casing some of the chalk will adhere to the line, which will thus be ehalked. The line can be drawn through the chalk one or more times, as may be desired, and according to the quantity of chalk desired on this line. One end ot' the cord or line C must be provided with abutton or knot, E, to prevent withdrawing the line entirely from the casing. By means of the abovedeseribed device a line or cord can be chalked very rapidly, and small pieces of chalk can be used. l prefer to make the outer ends of the casing conical; but they may have any other suitable shape. The casing is preferably made ot' metal, but can be made of rubber, celluloid, horn, Src.
I am aware that cylinders containingachalkreceptacle at each end are not broadly new, and
therefore do not claim such; but' What I claim, and desire to secure by Let' l. An improved chalker, consisting of a casing having conical ends and apertures in said ends, substantially as herein shown and described.
2.' The combination, with the cylinders A A', provided with conical caps B B', ofthe cord O, passing longitudinally through the casing formed of the two caps, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN SAML. JENKINS.
