, Be it known thatI, THOMAS A. Entsom of lll'enlo'larlt, in the county of Middlesex and State oi New. Jersey,have invented a new and useful improvement in Means for .lte'g'ulating Electrical Generators, (Case 'No. 461;) and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing, and to the letters ot'ret'erence marked thereon.
The objectof the present invention is to produce means for automatically regulating the generative capacity of dynamo or magneto electric machines, which means will be simple and compact in construction, avoiding the use of bulky resistances, and, further, willhe cilicient in operation, regulating'both forchang'es in the speed of the-engine and in-the number w The means are applicable more especially to dynamo or magneto electric machinessupplying lamps, inoto rs, or other translating devices arranged 'in independentmnltiple arc circuits. The object is accomplished by the'use ot a peculiar circnitbrcaher located in the field-circuit of the machine and controlled by an electromagnet another electrical controlling deviec'arranged 'in-xuultiplej-arc and affected the same as the lamps by variations in electrofinotive force caused byehanges in the speed of the onme as well as by changes-in the" number of translating devices.
In carrying out the inventiontherc is uscda' revolving cylindrical circuit-breaker, which is divided up between'metal and insulation on a plane arranged obliquely to the axis of rotation, the insulation and'metal having a tapering shape. By this construction the circuitbreaking cylinder .is made to present in revolving various proportions of insulation and metal at diiferen't points ot'itsilength. At one end of the cylinder theinsulation predominates largely, while towurd the other end the insulation regularly diminishes to a point. This end of the cylinder has preferably a band of metalextcuding ent 'ely around the cylinder, upon which rests a stationary brush or spring.- A'inovable brush is carried by a pivoted bar, and rests upon the cireuitdn'eaking cylinder at points varying from the stationary brush to the other end of the cylinder.
