GEORGE E. CLARK, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO G. HERBERT OUSHMAN, OF LYNN, .MASSAGHUSETTS.
BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,483, dated October 3, 1882. Application filed August 25, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. CLARK, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Boots or Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention has for its object a novel construction ofa shoe whereby it may be made to fit the hollow of the foot more closely than heretotore.
In this my invention I provide the inner side of the upper at its edge which is to lit the inner side or hollow of the foot with a narrow gore, which gives to the upper a permanent shape, whereby it is adapted to conform readily and smoothly to the hollow part at the inner side of the toot and also to the hollow part at the inner side of the shank of the last, without the usual stretching and pulling which are now commonly practiced when lasting theshank of a shoe. t
Figure 1 of the drawings represents, in side elevation, at ladys gaiter, but made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, an under side \iew of the lasted shoe as it appeared before the outer sole was applied, the upper being partially broken out to show the gore-piece.
The upper a is and may be of any usual or desirable shape. The upper will be provided with a sole, 1), attached thereto as usual. The upper a, at its inner side or shank, where it is to lit the most concaved part of the foot or of the last upon which the upper is lasted, is slitted for a short distance from its edge to receive the gore c, which is stitched into the upper, the slit being opened, thus making that edge of the upper longer at the shank and enabling the part of the upper from the apex of the gore to its base to fit the concavity of the inner side of the shank of the last. The material forming this gore, its edges being skived down thin, is extended along the inner side of the upper beyond the slit, and serves to support the hollow of the foot, and as the gorepiece fits the hollow of the foot snugly it acts to prevent the foot working forward into the toe of the upper, as in ordinary shoes lasted as usual. The inner sole is represented by d and the stitches uniting the gore-piece to the upper by e.
I claim 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a shoe provided with a gore, c, inserted into that part of the edge of the upper which is to fit and cover the inside hollow of the foot, whereby the said upper is permanently shaped to conform to the hollow of the inner side of the foot, as shown and described.
2. In a boot or shoe, the combination of the quarter-piece which covers the inner side of the foot with a piece of leather, 0, united to the said quarter-piece to form a support or brace for the quarter above the shank of the sole of the said boot or shoe, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE H. CLARK.
