Description

(No Model.)
J. W. PLUNKETT'.
GAS BURNER.
Patented Oct. 3, 1882.
' WITNESSES: w WW INVENTOR fl m;
TATES JOHN W. PLUNKETT, OF DUNSTALL PRIORY, COUNTY OF KENT, ENGLAND.
GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,433, dated October 3, 1882.
Application filed May 12, 1882. (N model.) Patented in England February 10,1882,No.643.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. PLUNKETT, of Dunstall Priory, in the county of Kent, in England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Appliances to Gas-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, in which is shown a side view, partly in section, of my improvement.
My invention consists in means or appliances whereby, in the case of gas-burners for illuminating, cooking, or heating purposes, the gas is turned off should the flame by accident be extinguished or not burning.
ltelerring to the drawing, to the frame or bar of metalorother material, A, on which the globe B is suspended, is cast an arm, C. To this arm 0 is attached, by pin or otherwise, atD, a lever, E, terminating at.the lower partin projection F. On this projection F, when the gas is lighted, rests a projecting arm, G, said arm beingsecured to the supply-pipeand tap at H. To this arm G a weight, H, or a spring is also attachcd. To this ring or frame or bar. A, above described, is also cast the short arm K, to which, by set-screw L or otherwise, is secured the cross-bar or tube M or other appliance, acted on by variation of temperature, extending 0 across or above or near the flame N, terminating in a pointed end, 0, which takes into or is pivoted to the arm or lever E, before described. The bar or tube M might besupplanted by acombination arrangement of two metals, hollow or otherwise, acting on the chronometcr- 5 balance system, or as the expander in a pressure-gage, or by a piston on mercury, air, vapor, liquid, &c. When the gas is lighted the flame N, acting on the cross-bar or tube or other apparatus, M, causes the same to expand. Should the flame N be extinguished, the contraction of the cross-bar or tube or other appliance, M, takes place, and the arm Gr, resting on the V- piece or projection F, is released, the weight H or spring causing it to fall, thus turning off 5 the gas.
What I claim is- The combination of the cross-bar M, t'ramc A,and lever E, having inclined portion F, with the cock H, having the arm G and weight H, 50 substantially as shown and described.
The above specification signed by me this ISthd-ay of April, 1882.
