ELECTRIC LAMP SUPPORT.
No. 265,292.- Patented Oct. '3, 1882.

UNTTT STATES ATaNT I VILLIAM WHEELER, OF CONCORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
ELECTRIC-LAMP SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,292, dated October 3, 1882,
Application filed February 13, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM YVHEELER, of Concord, in the county of Middlesex, of the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric-Lamp Supports; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawin'gs, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side view, of an electric lamp with my invention, as hereinafter explained, which is mainly for the purpose of bringing into their correct positions the lamp and its reflector in the process of raising them to their proper altitude for the reflector to cast or reflect in the desired direction or directions the rays of light proceeding from the carbon pencils ot' the burner.
. I Fig. 3 is hereinafter explained.
In the drawings, A denotes an electric lamp provided with a duplex reflector, B, such lamp, at the upper part ofits frame a, being provided with a suspension-bail, 0, having the angular form, as shown.
The tackle for elevating and depressing the lamp is represented at D as composed of a rope, I), and two pulleys,o d, the lower of such pulleys being hooked to the bail and the upper of them to the sustaining-eye E. The said eye E projects from one of the screws e, which go through two clainp plates, f g, fitted to slide vertically on a stationary rod, It, extending downward from a suitable beam or support, 1'. To each of the said screws there is a nut, It. The rod goes between the two clamp-plates, they, with the rod, screws, and nuts, serving to tix the eye E at any suitable altitude. At its foot the rod has fastened to and to projecttrom it, as represented, a bail-adjusting eye, F, a top view of which is shown in Fig. 3. Between such eye and the clamp-platesfg there is fixed or clamped on the rod an eye, G, for receiving and guiding the tackle-rope, which goes through the said eye G in manner as represented.
ln raising the lamp by means of the tackle the bail, as the lamp may nearly reach its intended highest altitude, will pass into the eye F, and by such, as the bail may continue to advance upward, will he turned and guided in a manner to adjust the lamp and its reflector or reflectors to the required positions for the light to be distributed in the necessary direction or directions.
WVere it not for the guide-eye F the lamp and its reflector or reflectors, when raised, would be liable to be swung around by the wind, so as to cause the rays of light to be reflected in wrong directions.
The guide-eye Gr also serves to aid in centralizing the bail with reference to the guideeye F while the bail may be in the act of being drawn upward in the eye F.
I claim as my invention as follows, viz:
1. The combination ofthe. bail-guide eye and its supporting rod or device with the electric lamp, its hail, reflector or reflectors, and hoisting tackle, all being arranged and to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the supporting-rod and the tackle-rope and bail-guide eyes applied to such rod with the electric lamp, its bail, reflector or reflectors, and hoisting-tackle, all being substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the adjustable tacklerope-supporting eye and the bail-adjusting eye with the sustaining-rod and the electric lamp, its bail, and reflector or reflectors, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the adjustable tacklerope supporting and guide eyes with thesnstaining rod,the bail-guideeye,theeleotriclamp, and its bail and reflector or reflectors, all being substantially and to operate as specified.
5. The combination ofthe bail-guide eye and its supporting rod or devices with the electric lamp, its bail, and reflect-or or reflectors, such bail being or to be supported by a hoisting rope or tackle, as explained.
6. The combination of the bail-guide eye and itssupporting rod or device with the. electric lamp, its bail, and hoisting tackle or rope, all being substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM WHEELER.
