The present invention relates to stapling devices.
It is more directed to a hand stapling device of the electrically powered type.
The particular embodiment of the present invention, is illustrated in the drawings and which will be described hereinafter in greater detail, comprises generally, a magazine, a housing on the magazine, a plunger mounted in the housing and electro-magnetic means for effecting movement of the plunger.
lt is a principal object of the present invention 'to provid-e a simple and ellicient stapling device which is operated by electric power and which eliminates the tiring hand punching and squeezing operations heretofore required.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a stapling device of the type described which utilizes magnetic force for driving the staples.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a stapling device of the type described which requires a minimum number of parts, which parts are adapted to be stamped or otherwise mass produced and which may be quickly and easily assembled.
It is still another object oi the present invention to provide a stapling device of the type deu scribed, wherein a novel housing structure having depending wall extensions is combined with an open ended magazine to form a staple outlet throat.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a stapling device of the type described having a novel plunger guide which extends upwardly into the plunger and constrains the latter to up and down movement.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a stapling device of the type described which is simple and durable, eiective for its intended objects, and which is adapted to be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplied in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which is shown various illustrative embodiments of this invention:

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, thn embodiment oi the invention illustrated therein comprises a base i9, having depending side walls il and l2, which are connected by a web or top Wall i3. The side walls ll and l?. have their lower edges l@ and l5 adapted to rest upon a horizontal supporting surface (not shown).
' On the upper surface of the top wall i3 adiacent one end l5 is secured, by welding or other suitable means, an anvil Il for receiving and turning in the ends of a driven staple. Adjacent the other end I 8 of top wall i3 are a pair of laterally spaced upstanding ears i9.
Arranged longitudinally of and in spaced overlying relation with respect to the base lll is a magazine 2li comprising generally a magazine frame 2l and a magazine rail 22 disposed longitudinally of and within the magazine frame. The magazine frame 2l comprises a bottom wall 23 from which extend upwardly side walls 2d having inwardly extending lianges 25 adjacent their upper edges. The frame 2l is provided with a pair of laterally spaced depending ears 25S adiacent to and spaced inwardly from one end 2l of the frame. The ears 25 are each disposed in side by side relation with respect to one of the ears I9, and a pin 23 extends through the ears i9 and 2t to pivotally mount the magazine 2G for ro tative movement about the pin, and space the frame 2l above the base lll.
The magazine rail 22 (Fig. 4) comprises a horizontal top wall 29 from which extend downwardly side walls 3B. The top wall 29 is spaced below the flanges 25 and the side walls Sli are spaced inwardly of the side walls 2d, providing space for the staples 3l which slide on the rail 22 between said rail and the frame 2l. The rail 2t. and frame 2l have their ends open, to thereby form an open ended magazine adapted to receive staples at one end 2'! and discharge staples at the other end 32.
Disposed on the flanges 25, spaced inwardly from the magazine end t2 and spaced inwardly from the magazine side walls 2d is a plunger guide 33 having front and rear walls 34% and side Walls 3o, and a top wall 3l. The side walls are formed with depending lugs 38 which extend into the flanges 25 and are iXedly secured therein by any suitable means. Thus, the plunger guide 35 is substantially an upstanding box-like member spaced inwardly from the side walls 24 and end 52 of the magazine 20.
Disposed over and enclosing the plunger guide 33 is a housing or body 49 having a front wall 4|, a rear wall 42, and side walls 43. The front wall 4| is recessed forwardly as at 44, and provided with a depending wall extension 45 spaced from the end 32 of staple magazine 20, for a purpose appearing hereinafter. The side walls 45 are provided with depending side wall extensions 45 which are secured to the outer sides of magazine frame side walls 24 by any suitable means, such as welding (not shown). In this manner the housing 40 is xedly secured in upstanding position on the magazine 20. The depending side wall extensions 4G extend forwardly beyond the end 32 of the magazine 20 and merge into the depending front wall extension 45, the depending front and side wall extensions combining with the end 32 to provide an outlet throat 41 for the staples in the magazine. The rear housing wall 42 is provided with a rearwardly extending hollow lug 43 having side walls 49 and a bottom opening 50, all for a purpose appearing hereinafter.
The upper portion of housing 40 is enlarged as at the front and rear walls 4| and 42 being formed with outwardly extending portions 52 and and the side walls 43 being formed with outwardly extending portions 54. The enlarged housing portion 5| is formed of upstanding front and rear walls 55 and 56 on the laterally extending portions 52 and 53, respectively. Similarly, the laterally extending side wall portions 54 are provided with upstanding outwardly offset side wall portions 51 adjacent the outer edges of portions 54. The front and rear wall portions 55 and 56 terminate in upper edges 58 and 59, and the side wall portions 51 terminate in upper edges |59. Thus, the housing 40 has its upper end open, for a purpose to be described hereinafter. The rear wall portion 56 is provided with a rearwardly extending tubular portion 6| having its rearward end open, as at 62, and formed with an opening 63 adjacent to and spaced rearwardly from the wall portion 5B.
Disposed within the hollow lug 48 and extending between the side walls thereof 49 is a pin 54 having a resilient strip 65 wound about the pin and having its free end connected to the staple pusher 66. The staple pusher 65 includes a plate 5l' slidably mounted on the rail 22 and having its end 68 engageable with the rearmost staple in the magazine 20. The staple pusher 56 is resiliently urged forwardly by the action of strip 65 to feed the forwardmost staple into the staple throat 41.
slidably receiving the plunger guide 33 is the plunger 15, which comprises front and rear walls i! and 12, respectively, and side walls 13 extending between the front and rear walls. A top wall 14 extends between the front and rear walls 1| and 12, and the side wall 13. The plunger has its lower end open and slidably receives therethrough the plunger guide 33. Thus, the plunger front wall 1| is slidable in the space between the plunger guide front wall 34 and housing front wall 4|, and the plunger rear wall 12 is slidable between the plunger guide rear wall 35 and housing rear wall 42. Similarly, the plunger side walls 13 are slidable in the space between plunger guide side walls 36 and housing side walls 43. Secured in partially overlapping relation with respect to the plunger front wall 1| and depending therefrom is a blade 15 which has its upper end secured to the plunger front wall by rivets 16 and which has its lower end 11 movable into the staple outlet throat 41. Thus, the lower end 11 of blade 15 will drive the forwardmost staple 3| outwardly through the staple outlet throat 41 and against the anvil |1 to secure the sheets or other material 18 disposed between the magazine frame 2| and anvil I1. The rivets 16 will ride freely with the plunger 10 and blade 15 as their heads extend into the recessed front wall portion 44.
In order to normally retain the blade 15 out of the staple outlet throat 41, a compression coil .spring is disposed within the plunger 10, having its upper end 8| abutting the underside of plunger top wall 14 and having its lower end 8| abutting the upper side of top wall 31 of plunger guide 33.
On the upper side of top wall 14 of plunger 10 is xedly secured, by any suitable means, a U- shaped member having upstanding legs 86 and Si. Disposed within the enlarged upper portion 5| of housing 40 is a solenoid coil 90 which is mounted on brackets 9|, the latter being secured to the laterally extending portions 52, 53 and 54 by rivets 92. The solenoid coil 90 has a central through opening in alignment with the plunger 10, and is provided with lead posts 93 and 94, adjacent the tubular rearward extension 6|. Extending slidably through the solenoid coil and in vertical alignment with the plunger 10 is a magnetic core, of conventional laminated structure, and designated |00. The core |00 is provided with a depending lug |0| which extends between the legs 86 and 81 of U-shaped member 65, and is secured thereto by a pin or rivet |02, Thus, the core |00 and plunger 10 are connected together for simultaneous movement toward and away from the magazine 20 for effecting discharge of a staple through the staple outlet throat 41, as heretofore described.
The upper end of housing portion 5| is provided with a cover |05 having front and rear wall portions |06, side wall portions |01, a top wall |08 and laterally extending front and rear portions |09. The laterally extending portions |09 seat on the upper edges 58 and 59 of front and rear wall portions 55 and 56, and the side wall portions |01 rest upon the upper edges 60 of side wall portions 51. The cover may be secured to the housing portion 5| by any suitable means.
Connected to the terminal posts 93 and 94 are wires ||0 and which extend outwardly through the aperture 62 to a source of electric current (not shown). Interposed in the line ||0 is a switch H2, which is mounted in the opening by securing means ||3. and is preferably of the easily manipulated button type. The opening 62 may be provided With a yieldable gasket or washer ||4 to minimize wear on the electric wires.
In operation, the staple pusher 66 is removed from the rail 22 by sliding outwardly beyond the end 21 of magazine 20 against the force of resilient strip 65. A supply of staples may then be inserted into the magazine through end 21 and slid along the rail 22. The pusher 66 is then inserted into the magazine and resiliently holds the supply of staples against the front wall depending extension 45, the forwardmost staple being within the staple outlet throat 41. By holding the tubular extension 6| with the hand of the operator, the magazine 20 may be swung acsacca upwardly about the pin 28 and material to be fastened may be inserted between the anvil and magazine, and the magazine returned to its position of movement toward the base I El. With the hand of the operator still on the tubular .portion iii, the switch H2 may be closed to actuate the solenoid si! and eiif'ect a magnetic field through the core itil to force the coretoward the magazine The core lili) and plunger 'Hl will move toward the magazine '2u 'against the force of spring Sd, `see Fig. 3, the :plunger being guided by the plunger guide 33 `and the blade 'iii extending into the `staple outlet throat il for driving a staple into the material it, as heretoiore described. It is appreciated that 'the sta*- pling device of the present invention may also he used as 'a tacker. This may be `accomplished by removing the base iii, which modification is within the scope of the present invention.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sen-se.
Having thus described my invention, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A stapling device comprising a base, anvil on one end of the base, an open ended staple magazine overlying said base with one end adjacent to said anvil and pivoted to said base at a point spaced from said anvil, an upstanding housing on said magazine adjacent said one end thereof, means on said housing and combining said magazine to form a staple outlet throat, a plunger in said housing, means mounting said plunger ior sliding movement toward and away from said magazine, resilient means urging said plunger away from said magazine, a blade carried by said plunger and movable into said throat for ejecting a staple from said magazine against said anvil, a magnetic core disposed within said housing above said plunger and connected to the latter for movement therewith toward and away from said magazine, and electro-magnetic means for effecting movement of said core toward said magazine against the force of said resilient means, said electro-magnetic means being adapted for connection to a source of electric current.
A stapling device as in claim l in combination with a hand grip on said housing, and a hand actuable switch on said hand grip for effecting the passage of current through said electro-magnetic means.
3. A stapling device comprising a base, an anvil on one end oi the base, an open ended staple magazineoverlying said base with one end adjacent to said anvil and pivoted to said base at a point spaced from said anvil, an upstanding housing on said magazine adjacent said one end thereof, means on said housing and combining said magazine to form a staple outlet throat, a plunger in said housing, means mounting said plunger for sliding movement toward and away from said magazine, resilient means urging said plunger away from said magazine, a blade carried by said plunger and movable into said throat ior ejecting a staple from said magazine against said anvil, a magnetic core disposed within said housing above said plunger and connected to the'latter for movement therewith toward and away from said magazine, and electro-magnetic means for effecting movement of said core toward said magazine against the force of said resilient means, said electro-magnetic means being adapted for connection to a source of electric current, said electr'oemagnetic means comprising a solenoid coil circumposed about said core and adapted to lproduce a magnetic eld through said core for moving the latter toward said magazine.

A stapling device comprising a base, an anvil on one end of the base, an open ended staple magazine overlying said base with one end adjacent to 'said anvil and pivoted to said base at a point spaced from said anvil, an upstanding housing on said magazine adjacent said one end thereof, means on said housing and combining said magazine to form a staple outlet throat, a plunger in said housing, means mounting said plunger for sliding movement toward and away lfrom said magazine, resilient means urging said plunger away from said magazine, a blade carried by said plunger and movable into said throat for ejecting a staple from said magazine against said anvil, a magnetic core disposed within said housing above said plunger and connected to the latter for movement therewith toward and 'away from said magazine, and electromagnetic means for eecting movement of said Core toward said magazine against the force of said resilient means, said electro-magnetic means being adapted for connection to a source of electric current, said n'rst named means comprising a pair of 4depending wall extensions on opposite sides of said magazine and extending outwardly beyond said one end thereof, and a depending wall extension in facing spaced relation with respect to said one end of said magazine and extending between said pair of depending wall extensions, whereby said one end of said magazine and said depending wall extensions combine to form a staple outlet throat.
5. A stapling device comprising a base, an anvil on one end of the base, an open ended staple magazine overlying said base with one end adjacent to said anvil and pivoted to said 'base at a point spaced from said anvil, an upstanding housing on said magazine adjacent said one end thereof, means on said housing and combining said magazine to form a staple outlet throat, a plunger in said housing, means mounting said plunger for sliding movement toward and away from said magazine, resilient means urging said plunger away from said magazine, a blade carried by said plunger and movable into said throat for ejecting a staple from said magazine against said anvil, a magnetic core disposed within said housing above said plunger and connected to the latter for movement therewith toward and away from said magazine, and electro-magnetic means for effecting movement of said core toward said magazine against the force of said resilient means, said electro-magnetic means being adapted for connection to a source of electric current, said plunger mounting means comprising a member positioned in spaced relation within said housing and xedly secured on said magazine, said member extending upwardly into said plunger and slidably received therein, to thereby mount said plunger for sliding movement toward and away from said magazine.
6. A stapling device as in claim 5, wherein said resilient means comprises a compression spring within said plunger having one end bearing 7 against said member and the other end bearing against said plunger.
7. A stapling device comprising an open ended staple magazine, an upstanding housing on said magazine adjacent one end thereof and forming therewith a staple outlet throat, a plunger mounted in said housing for movement toward and away from said magazine, resilient means urging said plunger away from said magazine, a blade carried by said plunger and movable into said throat for ejecting a staple from said magazine, a magnetic core disposed within said housing above said plunger and connected to the latter for movement therewith toward and away from said magazine, and electro-magnetic means for effecting movement of said core toward said magazine against the force of said resilient means, said electro-magnetic means being adapted for connection to a source of electric current.
8. A stapling device as in claim 7, in combination with a hand grip on said housing, and a hand actuable switch on said hand grip for effecting the passage of current through said electro-magnetic means.
9. A stapling device comprising an open ended staple magazine, an upstanding housing on said magazine adjacent one end thereof and forming therewith a staple outlet throat, a plunger mounted in said housing for movement toward and away from said magazine, resilient means urging said plunger away from said magazine, a blade carried by said plungei` and movable into said throat for ejecting a staple from said magazine, a magnetic core disposed within said housing above said plunger and connected to the latter for movement therewith toward and away from said magazine, and electro-magnetic means for eiecting movement of said core toward said magazine against the force of said resilient means, said electro-magnetic means being adapted for connection to a source of electric current, said electro-magnetic means comprising a solenoid coil circumposed about said core and adapted to produce a magnetic eld through said core for moving the latter toward said magnet.
10. A stapling device comprising an open ended staple magazine, an upstanding housing on said magazine adjacent one end thereof and forming therewith a staple outlet throat, a plunger mounted in said housing for movement toward and away from said magazine, resilient means urging said plunger away from said magazine, a blade carried by said plunger and movable into said throat for ejecting a staple from said magazine, a magnetic core disposed within said housing above said plunger and connected to the latter for movement therewith toward and away from said magazine, and electro-magnetic means for effecting movement of said core toward said magazine against the force of said resilient means, said electro-magnetic means being adapted for connection to a source of electric current, said resilient means comprising a compression spring disposed within and bearing against said plunger for urging the latter away from said magazine.
