(01.242-555) This invention relates tota'pe dispensing and retainingdevicesand particularly to-a container for tape from which the tape may be dispensed and on which it may be retained to provide a peripheral tacky surface.
Tacky types of tape, such as that known as Scotch tape, have been employed for removing lint, shattered glass, particles and the like from cloth, rugs, floors and other surfaces by winding the tape on the hand with the tacky side out and using the tape y-patting the hand upon the cloth or materia1 from which the lint is to be removed. The tacky material on the tape picks up the lint and thereby cleans the fabric or other material. Such a process, however,

Other objects and features of novelty of the invention will-be specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of theinvention, to the-following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

A cap 33 has a hollow central portion 34 on the end of the tapeis drawn; M .in the wall Iii-and may wallso'f which projecting cam portions 35 are provided which wedge against the cam surfaces 32 on the projecting end 3| of the handle assembly 21 when the cap is rotated clockwise thereon. The cap is secured on the end of the handle and retains the end wall I9 in locked relation on the casing II. The end of the roll of tape I8 may be withdrawn through the slot I4 and, after a predetermined desired length is withdrawn, may be torn from the roll along the teeth I5 at the edge of the slot. Sufficient of the tape may be withdrawn to wind about the wall I3 of the easing to extend across the slot I4 and be secured about the wall I3 when adhered to the tacky surface of the tape adjacent to the slot. This provides an outwardly disposed tacky surface throughout the entire cylindrica1 wall l3 of the casing and across the slot HI thereof, which permits the tacky surface to be rolled over cloth, rugs, floors, or other surfaces, to pick up particles, lint, glass and the like therefrom.
It will thus be seen that the tape dispenser I0 is of a multi-purpose type, one from which lengths of tape may be withdrawn and torn from the roll or which may be wound about the surface of the cylindrical wall I3, with the tacky side out so that the tape dispenser may be employed for picking up lint particles and the like when the casing is rolled over cloth or other material.
In Figs. 5 and 6, a further form of the invention is illustrated, that wherein a pair of cuplike casings 3! and 38, having mating hub portions :39 and 4| and mating shouldered edges 42 and .43, are provided so that after the roll of tape is placed within the annular space between the outer wall and the hub portion, the two casing portions 31 and 38 are retained in unit aligned relation by the engagement of the hub portions 39 and AI and the shouldered portions 42 and 43. A slot I4, having teeth I5 along the edge, is provided in the casing portions 3'! and 38, to be disposed in aligned relation when the casing portions are assembled. It will be noted in either arrangement that the slot I4 extends into the end walls of the casing at 44 to permit access of the finger into the casing for grasping the end of the tape so that it may be withdrawn.
In the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, any object may be employed, such as a pencil 45, on which the dispenser may be rolled in the same manner as indicated above, thereby providing a multi-purpose dispenser without the handle TI. Such a tape dispenser is cheaper to construct and may be desirable for small rolls of tapes or tapes of small width. It is tobe understood that one of the casing portions 37 and 38 may be employed for a narrow roll of tape and the end wall I9 added thereto for closing the open side, the same as in the structure illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4. The engagement of the hub portions 39 and 4|, provided on one of the casing portions 31 and 38 and on the end wall 59, along with the shoulders 42 and 43', will retain the cover on the casing portion.

What is claimed is:
1. In a multi-purpose tape dispenser, a sepa rable casing having a cylindrical wall containing a slot through which tape may be dispensed, a hub within the casing on which a roll of tape may be supported, the outer surface of said wall being relatively smooth so that the tape when drawn through the slot may be secured with the tacky side out about said cylindrical wall and across said slot to provide a substantially cylindrical tacky surface, a handle pivoted in the center of said casing and extending from one side thereof on which said casing is free to roll,

In a multi-purpose tape dispenser, a separable casing having a cylindrical wall containing a slot through which tape may be dispensed, a hub Within the casing on which a roll of tape may be supported, the outer surface of said wall being relatively smooth so that the tape when drawn through the slot may be secured with the tackyside out about said cylindrical wall and across said slot to provide a substantially cylindrical tacky surface, said hub having a hollow interior, a handle, said handle having a cylindrical extension projecting through said hub, and a removable locking element secured to the end of said cylindrical extension.
