Application September 7, 1950, Serial No. 183,492
Claims. (01. 62-915) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in refrigerated cartons and more particularly to an improved carton construction for supporting containers to carbon dioxide, commercially known as Dry Ice, in the carton to cool the contents thereof.
An important object of the invention is to provide a partition in the carton of improved construction to hold the refrigerant in position between rows of beverage or other containers in the carton.
A further object is to provide a refrigerated carton of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the partition showing the containers of refrigerant supported therein;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of a carton showing the partitions and refrigerant therein;
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 2; and,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the partition.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration we have disclosed a preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 5 designates a preferably removable separator or partition for a carton 6, the partition being constructed of cardboard or other suitable material, such as commonly employed in carton construction.
The partition is cut along one or more vertical lines 1 extending downwardly from the upper edge of the partition to a point adjacent the lower edge thereof and tongues B are partially cut from the partition material at the lower end of the line I and at each side thereof to form a pair of vertical wings 9 separated from each other along the line I and united with the partition material along a vertical fold line [0 for folding the wings horizontally at opposite sides of the partition.
The tongues 8 are united with the partition material along horizontal fold lines I I for folding the tongues downwardly into a horizontal position at opposite sides of the partition.
The wings 9 are folded horizontally in spaced apart parallel relation to each other and a block of solidified refrigerant or a container l2 suitable for holding carbon dioxide or Dry Ice is placed between the wings and tightly held thereby with the bottom of the container resting on the tongues 8 to support the container in the partition.
The wings 9 are formed with openings E3 to expose cans or other containers packed in rows in the carton to the cooling effect of the refrigerant in the containers [2.
After the partitions loaded with the refrigerant containers l4 are placed in the carton the lid 15 may be held closed by a staple or other suitable fastener 16.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a refrigerated carton, a partition in the carton, formed of a single sheet of material and having an opening therein, a tongue projecting horizontally from the partition at the lower portion of the opening and adapted to underlie and support a solid refrigerant in the opening in a position with the refrigerant exposed at opposite sides of the partition, and a pair of vertically extending wings projecting laterally from the partition in the region of the opening and opposing opposite sides of the refrigerant in supporting engagement therewith.
2. In a refrigerated carton, a partition in the carton, formed of a single sheet of material and having an opening therein and supporting means integrally formed with the partition and adapted to support a solid refrigerant in the opening sub stantially in the plane of the partition.
3. In a refrigerated carton, a partition in the carton, formed of a single sheet of material and having a vertical slot extending through the top of the partition and supporting means integrally formed with the partition, and adapted for supporting a solid refrigerant placed in the slot in 3 a, position exposed at opposite sides of the partition.
4. In a refrigerated carton, a partition havin an opening, and a pair of vertical wings in the region of the opening projecting from opposite 5 sides of the partition and adapted for engaging opposite sides of a, solid refrigerant for holding the latter in the opening.
5. In arefrigerated carton, a partition 'having an opening, a pairpf vertical Wingsin the region of the opening projecting from opposite sides of the partition and adapted for engaging opposite sides of a refrigerant for holding the-clatter in the opening, and a horizontally positionedtongue at the lower portion of the opening underlying and supporting the bottom of the refrigerant.
