|The present invention relates to explosively actuated stud driving tools and more particularly to the deector or safety pad structure therefor.
In the use of stud driving tools for installing studs in concrete wall structures, it is quite frequently desirable to place the gun in a relatively narrowv space between two opposed walls, as for example in fastening a piece of channel to a surface. More specically, in the installation of door bucks or frames on an open floor so that a Wall structure can be erected around the door frame, it is necessary to drive a fastening stud into the concrete floor for each side of the door buck. Heretofore, the use of stud driving tools for this type of work was limited by the over all width of the safety pad of the tool, or the safety pad could not be used.
The present invention is concerned with obviating the above disadvantages and enabling use of a stud driving tool in numerous installations where its use was formerly either prohibited by the Size of the safety pad or because the tool could only be used without a safety pad. Specifically with reference to door bucks, an expanding safety pad is provided which can be compressed and inserted between the two wall surfaces where the tool must be used, and then expanded to engage the wall surface so that complete protection is afforded to the operator from both the muzzle blast and from a ricocheting stud. The tool as disclosedherein is useful with all widths of the various existent door bucks and with a like variety of other channel shaped recesses. g
The above and other objects of the invention are attained in connection with a preferred embodiment of the invention, as disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the muzzle end of a stud driving tool employing a safety pad embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is an elevational view taken at right angles to Figure l.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view opposite to Figure 2 and illustrating the tool in place in a door buck.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the lines @-4 in Figure 3 showing the expanded position of the pad before it is compressed for insei-tion between the fianges of a frame or channel.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but illustrating the safety pad structure in a compressed condition between the flanges of the frame as in Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of the pad.

The stud driving tool in connection with which the invention is illustrated may be of the type disclosed in the co-pending application of Erickson and Bullwinkle, Serial No. 130,818, filed December 2, 1949, for Stud Driving Tool. Stud driving tools of this type are red normally by .an operation which includes placing the muzzle end of the tool against the surface in which the stud is to be installed, and tools of this type also include a receding barrel l shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 which moves back into a housing structure Il during the firing operation. There is also provided a mounting sleeve I2 and a safety pad i3 and this mounting sleeve is spring-urged to the position shown in Figure l by a spring I4 so that the mounting sleeve for the safety pad is movable both with respect to the housing Il and the barrel l0. This provides for extension of the barrel into recesses as disclosed for example in the co-pending application of Smith and Daugherty, Serial No. 124,078, led October 28, 1949.
Deferring to Figures l, 4 and 8, the safety pad structure i3 includes a frame piece 2| formed of sheet metal and having an aperture in which an end of the safety pad sleeve I2 is secured as by means of brazing, for example. The frame piece 2l is formed of sheet metal and has its respective ends bent to form guide channels 22 in which angle- shaped frame extensions 23 and 24 are slidably mounted in overlapping relation. The frame extension 24 is guided by a struck-out ear 26 of the frame piece which thereby provides a spaced and guide surface parallel to the surface 23 which is engaged by the extension 24. The two frame extensions 23 and 24 have respective slots 21 extending inwardly from their inner edges to provide clearance for the barrel I9. The frame extension 23 is also notched at 28 to provide clearance for the ear 26. The lower flange of each channel-shaped end 22 of the frame piece 2l is also provided with a struck-up ear 29 to form additional guides for the frame extension 23. The two frame extensions 23 and 24 of the safety pad structure are also provided with similar slots 3l at each end to provide limit stops for the in-and-out movement of the extensions 23 and 24 with respect to the frame piece 2l, in cooperation with a pair of screws 32 threaded into the lower flanges of the guide 3 channels 2 of the frame piece. The screws 32 also serve as retaining means for a resilient pad 36 which is nested between the down-turned flanges of the frame extensions 23 and 24.
The pad structure 36 is formed of resilient material, such as synthetic rubber for example, and provides a lower surface which is engaged with the work, and also provides spring means for yieldably retaining the frame extensions in an expanded condition with respect to the frame piece 2 l. Referring to Figures,anelli,v the resilient pad structure 36 includes a central body portion 37 having an aperture 33 to slide freely over the muzzle of the barrel K with only; a slight clearance, and also has twoapertures- 379 for'the screws 32. At either side of the body portion the pad structure 36 has similar cpmpressible side portions formed integrally with diamond-shaped walls 4l. In the present embodiment there are two apertured diamond-shaped walls 4I at either side of the body 3l. Thus each of the frame extensions form backing members for a pad structure having a lattice shape to provide spring means at the sides thereof engaged with the frame extensions to maintain yieldably an expanded condition of said frame extensions.
The operation of the tool will be described in connection with a conventional door buck including a channel-shaped upright having opposite side flanges 46, a central web 4l and a floor engaging portion d8 formed integrally with the web H1 at a right angle thereto. The operator grasps the side extensions of the safety pad (as shown in Figure 4c) and compresses it until it can be inserted in the recess between the flanges 46 of the door buck and to engage the web il thereby and then releases the safety pad. The frame extensions 23v and 24 move outwardly under the innuence. of the spring means of the safety pad into close engagement with the side anges ll', as shown for example in Figure 5. With the tool in this position the barrel i3 of the tool is in proper alignment for insertion of the stud into the floor surface 49. Usually the floor engaging portion 48 is provided with an aperture at the desired location. The tool is then fired in the normal fashion to install the stud and fasten the door buck to the fioor.
Whilewe have shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that the invention is capablesof both variation and modification from thei form shown, so. that its scope should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
We claim:

In an explosively actuated, stud driving tool having a barrel for engagement of themuzzl'e end thereof with a surface into which a stud is to be driven, a safety pad structure mounted on said tool aboutI the muzzle end of saidbarrel for engagement with said surface, said padstructure comprising a frame disposed transversely of said barrel,v backing means mounted on saidy frame for limited movement transversely of saidbarrel,
4 and a resilient surface engaging pad carried by said frame and engaging said backing means.
2. An explosively actuated stud driving tool as recited in claim 1 in which the resilient surface engaging pad includes a compressible apertured side portion engaged with said member.
3. An explosively actuatdstld driving tool as recited in claim l in whichsaid resilient pad has a lattice-like configuration.

In an explosively actuated stud driving tool havingabarrel for engagement of the muzzle end thereof with a surface into which a stud is to be driven; a safety pad structure mounted on said tool about the muzzle end of said barrel for engagernentA with said surface, said pad structure comprising al frame disposed transversely of said barrel and having opposite channel-shaped guides, a plurality of frame extensions mounted on said` frame in engagement with said guides for limited movement transversely of said barrel, anda resilient surface engaging pad'interposed between said frameextensions and ope'rativet'o maintainyield'ably an xpan'ded position of said extensions;
