The two abrasive'wheels are disposed with their peripher ies in point contact, with their axes of rotation intersecting at an acute angle; and with their planes of rotation forming an acute angle with the major plane of the base unit. (With this wheel disposition the wheels rotate as a knife blade is drawn therebetween past their point of contact.) The two base pieces are so connected that, while they are held in the same major plane, they may be adjusted toward one another to maintain contact between the abrasive wheels as the latter wear with usage. Means are included for locking the base pieces in their adjusted positions.
The base pieces are preferably connected by a pair of bars, one of which extends from each base piece and enters a bore in the opposite base piece. The bores and bars should be parallel to the major plane of the base unit. The means for locking the base piece preferably consists of a threaded rod which is passed through a bore in one base piece and is threaded into a bore in the opposite base piece.

planes of rotation forming an acute angle with the major plane ofthe base unit A'.' With;this wheels-will rotate as'a-knife blade is drawn between-them-past their point of contact (which has been indicated at 25 in Figures 1 and 2).
The abrasive wheels I5 and 20 are similar cylinders and the cylindrical edge of each wheel is bevelled, as indicated at 26, along the line where it meets one of the side faces of the wheel. The contact point 25 of the two wheels occurs between the two bevelled edges 26.
The two base pieces Ill and II are connected by 'bars or rods 21 and 28. Bar 21 extends from base piece I l in parallelism with the major plane of base piece I l and enters a bore'29 in the opposite base piece, i. e. base piece [0. Bar 28 extends from base piece In, again in parallelism with the major plane of that base, and enters a bore 30 in the opposite base piece II. The bores 29 and 30 are also both parallel to the major plane of the base pieces. As the abrasive wheels l5 and 20 wear during the life of the sharpener, the desired contact of the wheels may be maintained by moving base pieces l0 and I2 towards one another, during which movement the bars or rods 21 and 28 will penetrate more deeply into the bores 29 and 30. A means is provided for securing the two base pieces In and H in their adjusted positions. This means includes a rod 3| having a threaded end 32 and carrying a wingnut 33 which is rigidly secured to the end oppo- As viewed from above, the abrasive wheels I5 and form a wide V. When thedevice is being used, I recommend that the knife blade be moved from the point towards "the wide end of this V. The knife should be drawn or pushed in one direction only. When the knife is drawn in the recommended direction, both wheels will rotate upwardly a viewed from thepoint of contact 25. The passage of the knife between the wheels at the, point will serve both to sharpen the cutting edge of the knife and at the same time remove some of the thick heel of the knife.
If desired, a bevelled edge such as. 20 may be provided on each sideof, each wheel is and 2E,
so. that if the bevel at. oneside is given e1- oessivewear, the wheels may be removed from their supporting elements 12 and I3 and reversed so that. a new bevelled edge is brought into playv in the case of each wheel. Although bevelling of the edges ispresently preferred, I do not regard it as essential to the invention.
What, I claim as my invention is:
l. A knife sharpener comprising a, twe-piece base unit in which the major; planes of the two base pieces are co-planar; a wheel-supporting element. rigidly. secured to each base piece; and an abrasive wheel rotatably mounted by each wheel-supporting element; said abrasive wheels being disposed their peripheries in contact, with their axes of rotation intersecting. at an a u e ngle. and with the r planes. of rotation forming an acute angle with the major plane of the bas ,Whereby saidwheelswill rotate as a knife blade, is drawn therebetween at; their point of contact; said two base pieces beingso con- 4 nected that they are held in the same major plane but may be adjusted toward one another to maintain contact between the abrasive wheels as the latter wear; and means for locking the two base pieces in their adjusted positions.
2. A knife sharpener as defined in claim 1, in which said abrasive wheels are similar cylinders and the cylindrical edge of each wheel is bevelled along the line where it meets one of the side faces of the wheel, the point of contact of the two wheels being between the two bevelled edges.

A knife sharpener a defined in claim 1, in which the means for locking the two base pieces in their adjusted position comprises a rod having a threaded end and a bore in each of said base pieces, one of said bores being threaded, said rod being passed through the bore in one of the base pieces and threadedly engaged in the threaded bore in the other base piece.

A knife sharpener as defined in claim 1, in which said two base pieces are connectedby at least two bars, each of which extends from, one of the base pieces in a plane which is parallel to the major plane of the basepieces and enters a bore in the opposite base piece, the bores also being parallel to the major plane of the base:-

A knife sharpener as defined in claim. 4, 'in which the means for locking the two base pieces in their adjusted position comprises a rod having a threaded end and a borein each of, said base pieces, one of said bores being threaded, said rod being passed through the bore in one of the base piece and threadedly engaged in the threaded bore in the other base piece.
