Application March 24, 1950, Serial No. 151,697
1 Claim.
My invention relates to an improvement in a :tiling unit and its novelty consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
One object of my device is to furnish a complete hling unit which can be used, for example, on top of a ling cabinet when the cabinet is full and more space is required or in oase part of the les in the cabinet must be assembled for a special use and so kept together in one unit temporarily outside of the cabinet.
Another object of my filing unit is for use in cabinets which do not have filing rods mounted therein, as my device is a complete unit and will serve as a filing unit in any cabinet drawer without any further equipment.
A still further object of my filing unit is to so support the les on a broad flat platform that no matter how heavily loaded they may be they will not sag and hump but will be evenly supported at al1 times on a broad central base avoiding buckling of the filing envelope or container and also of the contents of the same, which is very vital in keeping permanent records, photographs, pictures, etc. which must be kept in good usable condition at all times for many years.
Referring to the drawings- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of my assembled device with portions broken away for convenience in illustration and showing a le in supported position thereon;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one form of single spacing and supporting element of my device showing in dotted outline the method of mounting the same on the connecting and supporting bar;
Fig. 3 is a cross section of Fig. 1 on the line 3-3; and
Fig. 4 is a small perspective of a single supporting unit of another form of the same.
In the drawings, 5 and 8 are wire portions of a spacer element having horizontal shelf portions 'I and vertical portions 8 which cross at 9 and having middle portions I3 terminating at I4 by passing through and being rigidly secured by spot welding to a back section l of an open square platform II and the opposite ends of Wirefportions and 6 terminate at the front of platform II, to the underside of which they are rigidly secured at I2 by spot Welding.
A hinged foldable spacing bar l5 of three or more sections having pairs of parallel cut outs I6 4:on each edge at definitely spaced intervals is adapted to be engaged as shown in the dotted -figure in Fig. 2 by spacer elements engaging one of the said parallel pairs of cut outs l G by means of the tW-o middle portions i3 engaging said out outs I6 thereby locking said spacer element firmly over said spacing bar I5 which holds said spacer element rigidly in a vertical ,positpn This oper- 2 ation can be repeated with the addition of further spacer elements until as many have been added to said spacing bar I5 as may be desired.
The foldable spacing bar I5 has several sections each of which is riveted at Il to the adjoining section so that they can be turned on said rivets acting as hinges to fold up said bar I5 to a short length or opened up to secure a longer bar I5 when desired to mount a larger number of spacing elements thereon.
Another form `of spacing element is shown in Fig. 4 which is distinguished from the first form by downturned lugs I8 which have holes therein adapted to receive the rods which are mounted in the bottom of the drawers of some of the usual filing cabinets in general use.
In Fig. 1 there is shown a iile container I9 in supported position and many such files can be placed on the broad flat base furnished by the square platform I l so as to properly support files that carry even the heaviest loads and because of this broad base support prevent the buckling of the files and of the things contained in said files.
Another important feature of my combination is the close stacking of the spacing and supporting elements made possible by my structure and the folding feature of the spacing and supporting bar Which makes possible the compact packing of my entire combination for storing and shipping.
Many variations may be made in my device Without departing from the spirit and intent of the same and said variations are comprehended within the scope of the claim herein.
What I claim is:
An independent le holder unit comprising a plurality of spacer elements consisting of an open square horizontal platform to which are rigidly secured at its back section a pair of vertical wire rectangular frames the inside vertical portions of which cross at the upper sections and the lower ends of which pass below the parts secured to said platform, the lower portion of said outer sides of said wire frames being turned horizontally in the plane of said platform, a hat bar having hinged sections and a plurality of pairs of parallel cut outs on opposite sides thereof adapted to be engaged by the lower inside portions of said vertical wire rectangular frames to hold said spacer elements in vertical position on said flat bar.
