Description

CATTLE-PUMP.
Specification of.Letters Patent No. 26,465, dated December 2f), 1859. l
To all'whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, Jol-IN AGSPURGER, of Trenton, Butler county,0hio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cattle- Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following fto bea full, clear, `andexactdescription of the same, `reference being had to the accompanying drawings, `making part of this specification. i
My invention relates to pumps to which the weight of cattle is applied as a `power in raising `water for their `own use from wells, &c., and consists in a device forpreventing concussion and violence at the termination of the upward motion of the bucket, and an arrangement by which the quantity of water raised from the well is at all times proportioned to the weight of the animal so that the speed of the bucket in being raised from the well may be substantially the same under the operation of different weights of animals; and also in various minor improvements hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an ap aratus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 1s a longitudinal section of the same.- Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan of the automatic gates. Fig. 4:
is an enlarged vertical section of the bucket and Fig. 5 a plan of the same.
A is a fixed platform to which the movable platform B, is hinged at C.
D is a frame in which the pulley E, brake wheels F F and axle Gr arewsupported and work on suitable friction rollers.
H is a platform hinged to platform B at a, and connected by bell cranks b b', rods and chains c c', to the axles of gates I, I.
The platform B is that on which the animal to be watered walks and lowers by his own weight, and through the following connections hoists the bucket from the well. The platform is connected by suitable straps or chains tothe axle G, and the pulley E is similarly connected to the bucket K, the sizes of pulley E and axle C bearing the same relation to each other as do the respective distances required to be traveled by bucket and end of platform B. e
M are guide rods on which the ears (l of the bucket are made to slide in rising. t
N N are levers hinged to the frame D at e e and connected together by the rods O. The levers N are provided on their under sides with the brake springs f (which may be coiled springs or straight as shown).
lowest position being fcausedgtoffactupon the levers N', and produce thebrake"lpres-` f quickly `when lowered finto `the well. 1 "Its when the `valve is openedandthe water al- The levers .areV balanced "by weights Pflso that when the :platform is atyitshighest ipoi sition the springsmayrest easilywonfvor ylittle above "the brake-pulleys 1F." e springs are brought forcibly` to brake upon the pulleys F (when themomentum :of vde-.l sc'ending platformlfB; is` requinedbto "brefs checked) bythesaidfplatformfwhennearits lowed to escape intothe trough Grflhe` u f weight of the platformlB when unoccu iedfzl is through wheel and axle overhalance by the weight of the bucket, so that onzthe retirement of each animal fromthe platform e the bucketlowers quickly into the well to be t refilled. The quantity of water raised at..
each elevation of the bucket is by the`follow` ing device proportioned to the weight of the El animal on the platform. A rod 'al is `fitted to slide vertically in the bucket and provided fl inside the bucket with a valve 7c, and outside 3"?. with a float Z. i `The `hole @in thebucket through which the valve` rodpasses is made l considerably larger than the rod so thatva communication may exist` between"`insde 5i .p and outside of bucketfthrough fbottomj when the valve cis raised. The tendency `of .3 L the float Z is to keep the valve 7c raised when the bucket is loweredinto the water and by;
its weight to close it1 afterlleavingthe water.` y I The time occupied` in the bucket leavingthe water determines the quantityjof water left in it after clearingthe surface `when the `valve lc closes. Thus heavy cattle by thein power to raise the bucket more quickly than` e lighter ones, give less` time for the water in 3 f the bucket to escapegat valvek, :before itcloses, andiin consequence are `compelled to s;
draw up more water. `By the regulationof the quantity of water raised in proportion to` y l the weight of thelanimal an easyuniform` motion 1s given tothe platform.`
T is a checkV rope connected to "platforms p.
A and B to `limit the elevation of thelatter. t
Each animal onenteringthegates II and v 1" stepping on platform presses it down and y.
through its connections b b', o 0 closes the gatesbehind him and prevents entrance of others, and as in retiring after raising the bucket and drinking he has to pass the gates before another animal can enter, the platform B has time to resume its elevated position, and the bucket K to be refilled.
m m are loaded chains used to open the gates I I when the animal steps off the platform H. The trough G, is provided with a valve n weighted so that when the platform is lowered for the trough to receive water it may close and prevent water escaping till the animal is satisfied. It is kept open in the platforms elevated position by contact with the block U on its trigger 0 for the purpose of allowing all water that may be left in the trough to escape to prevent freezing up in winter.
p is a spout forming communication from the bucket to the trough G.
I am aware that it is common to operate a valve by means of a oat; but know of no instance in which the parts have been arranged in the manner which I have exhibited so as to hold the valve open for a period after the bottom of the bucket is raised above the water, and thus prevent more water remaining in the bucket than can be effectually raised by the weight of the animal.
I claim as new and of my invention herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. The combination and arrangement of the platform B, levers N, N, springs f, weights I), rods O, and break wheels F, operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of the float Z rod z' and valve lo in the described combinationwith and relation to the buoketK and hinged platform B, operating in the manner and for the purpose explained.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
