HOD STAND v 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 zzvmvron v HARRY M. vounqJw ATTORNEY.
Patented July 21, 1953 UNITED. PATENT OFFICE; them. .4 if I Hop s'rANn ha -Michaela, web'saeomves; M atsi' cati emar'chrv.1941, squint-15735208 This invention relates" generally "to: hod stands and, more particularly; to portable-hod stands.
It is the primary object of thepresent invention to provide a hod stand which iscdu'ra'ble andru'gged'in construction andoperati'on. I,
It is an additional object of thepresen-t in? vention to provide a hod stand which can be quickly folded up into a compact readily portable unit and can be, onveniently setup again wherever'needed'. f f f I It is a further object ofthe present invention to provide a hod stand capable of accommodat-- ing hods of various lengths and sizes. v
With the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features-ofform, construction, arrangement, and combination. of parts presently described and-pointed out in the 7 claims.
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of a modifled form of hod plate constructed in accordance with and embodying the present invention; Figure 7 is a front elevational view of the supplemental plate forming part of the present invention; and v Figure 8 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 88 of Figure 6.
Referring now in more detail and by reference 7 characters to the drawings, which illustrate are uniform in length and are pivotally mounted at their upper ends to the rear face of the plate I by bolts 5, 6, respectively, for swinging movement parallel to the plane of the plate I. When being swung outwardly into supporting disposition, the legs 2, 4, are arrested by curved re-- taining clips 1, 1', respectively, welded or otherwise suitably fixed on the rear face of the plate 7 l. The leg 3, of greater length than the legs 2, 4, is pivoted between ears 8, 8', similarly welded on the central portion of the rear face of plate .dicular to the plane of the plate I.
. 2 I for" swinging movement in a planeperpen The lip-p81 end 9 of the leg Bieprovided'with an inwardly anoldownwardly sloping face It to abut against the rear face of plate I when the leg 3 is m'ov'ed outwardlyinto supporting disposition. Respec' tive inward'movements of the legs 2', 3; 4, bring them together, as shown in dotted lines inFi g'u-re l, for convenient portability.
The legs 2 3', 4, are provided at their lower ends with cast foot sections ll having outwardly extending flanges [2 at their base. Said sections II are 'diametrally decreased at their upper ends for fitting within the lower sections of t e legs 2, 3, 4, and are retained therein by'a-r-ivet 13' extendin'gthrough apertures [4, MT, in" the legs 2, 3, 4, and alignedaperture' W of the sections it.
The forward'face ofthe plate I is" provided with angle members I6, |'6',-swive11 mounted on theforward ends -of 'the bolts 5. 6, respectively, which extend through the apertures IT, ll, of the plate I. Firm tightening of'the bolts 5.6; sets the angle members I6; I6, rigidly" at the desired angle, depending upon the size and shape of the hod which is to be rested against the stand A for appropriate loading.
In .use, the hod stand A is set up by the hod carrier in close and convenient proximity to the pile of bricks or mortar from which he is loading his hod. The hod 1) (shown .schematicallyby dotted lines in Figure '5) is set in the stand with the trough portion resting in the angle members I6, l6, and'the hod handle extending downwardly to the ground midway between the stand legs 2, 4. The hod b may then be loaded conveniently and, when'loaded, may bequiokly and simply transferred by the hod carrier to his shoulder. It should be noted that the hod b is quite securely supported by the hod stand A and yet the hod b can be removed from the stand A with a minimum of effort.
In some localities, it is a safety requirement that the hod be supported by a hod stand from which it cannot fall accidentally and some con- 7 venience and speed of handling must, if necess'ary, be sacrificed to this end. For such purpose, a modified form of hod stand A may be provided as shown in Figures 6, '7, and 8. The modified form of hod stand A is substantially identical with the previously described stand A, including a plate I, collapsible legs 2,3, 4, bolts 5, 6, and angle members l6, Hi. The hod stand A is, however, provided with a supplemental plate 18 mounted slidably upon th e forward face 3 of the plate I and held in place underneath the angle members I6, 16, by the bolts 5, 6, extending through elongated parallel slots l9, l9. Along its upper margin, the plate I is provided with a V-shaped recess 20 adapted to receive and hold the hod when the plate I8 is in upward position, as shown in Figure 6, and the pole or handle of the hod extends loosely between the angle members IE, IS. Insuch position, the hod cannot accidentally fall down, spilling its contents, although when so supported the loaded hod must be lifted bodily upwardly and out of the recess 20, a somewhat more laborious and time-consuming operation than that resulting when the angle members [6, 16', are used. 'It should be noted that the slotslS, l9, are of such length that the plate l8 can be dropped to a relative position in which the upper margins of the plates 1 and I8 coincide, in which case the hod stand A may be used in precisely the same manner as theprevious1y described hod stand A. i
It should be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the hod stand may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hod stand comprising a metallic rectangular plate, two bolts extending through said plate, two laterally swingable leg members respectively mounted at their upper ends on said bolts, angle clips mounted on the other end of said bolts, a central leg member longer than said laterally swingable leg members swingably mounted in the central portion of the rear face of said plate, and an auxiliary plate slidably mounted between the angle clips and the rectangular plate and being provided along its upper edge with a notch for holding a hod trough. 1
2. A hod stand comprising a rectangular plate,
a supplemental plate provided with a V-shaped indentation, bolts extending through apertures in said rectangular plate and aligned longitudinal apertures in the supplemental plate, angle clips mounted on one end of said bolts, lateral uniform leg members swivelly mounted at their upper ends on the other end of said bolts, curved retaining plates mounted on the rear face of said rectangular plate, a central leg member longer than said lateral leg members swingably mounted on the rear face of said rectangular plate, and cast foot members provided on the lower ends of said leg members.
3. A hod stand comprising a rectangular plate, an auxiliary plate provided with spaced aligned longitudinal apertures, bolts extending through apertures in said rectangular plate and said longitudina'l apertures in the auxiliary plate Whereby said auxiliary plate may be shiftably moved in relation to the rectangular plate, angle clips mounted on the extended ends of said bolts, said auxiliary plate being furthermore provided with a V-shaped indentation in its upper margin for References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Number Name Date 404,146 Ackerman May 28, 1889 1,000,284 Moore Aug. 8, 1911 1,673,205 Romao June 12, 1928 2,210,626 La Femina Aug. 6, 1940 2,452,684 Robinson Nov. 2,1948 2,575,645 Thompson Nov. 20, 1951 I FORElGN PATENTS Number Country Date 12,715 Great Britain July-27, 1891 394,075 Great Britain June 22, 1933
