BOX HANDLING TOOL Filed July '1, 19-40 letented June 1 19 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BOX HANDLING TOOL Roy J. Fuller, Pottsville, Pa.
Application July 1, 1940, Serial No. 343,471
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a new and improved box handling tool.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a tool that will materially facilitate the lifting or tilting of one end of a shipping box so that a hand truck or the like can be placed thereunder for loading the box on the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character that is simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the improved tool and illustrating the same in use for the purpose of lifting a box.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the tool.
Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof it will be observed that the improved tool which is generally designated by the reference numeral 5 comprises a hollow tubular member 6 formed with a handle portion 1 at its outer end. The member 6 is formed with an elongated slot 8 extending substantially the full length thereof.
Slidably mounted in the tubular member 6 is a substantially cylindrical-shaped bar 9, said bar being formed with a transversely disposed heel piece l0 secured to the under side thereof by any desired means. As afore indicated, the bar 9 is slidably disposed in the member 6 and is retained therein by means of the pin ll carried thereby which projects through the slot 8 and is slidable therein. As is to be understood, the pin ll prevents disengagement of the bar from the member 6.
A downwardly and outwardly projecting hook I2 is fixedly secured to the inner end of the tubular member 6, the portion l3 of said hook adapted to engage one end of a packing case, shipping box or the like when using the tool.
In using the device for tilting or lifting a shipping box or packing case M, the heel piece I'D is positioned adjacent the far edge of the box after which the tubular handle member 6 is moved rearwardly until the portion I3 of the hook l2 engages the near side of the box. Upward pressure on the handle, with the hook l2 serving as a fulcrum, causes the box to be easily tilted with the heel piece Iii and hook l2 wedged against the sides of the box. With the box in the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, a hand truck, dolly or the like, can be placed thereunder with very little effort on the part of the operator.
Also it will be understood, of course, by those skilled in the art that variations in the hereinabove described device involving the substitution of substantial equivalents for the devices described are intended to be comprehended within the spirit of the present invention and that the invention is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showin of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A tool of the character described comprising a tubular member, said member having a handle formed on one end thereof and a longitudinal slot extending throughout the major portion of its length, a hook attached to and extending downwardly from the other end of said member,
a rod slidably mounted in said member, a pin carried by the inner end of said rod and movable in said slot, and a transverse member carried by the outer end of said rod.
ROY J. FULLER.
