This invention relates to coil handlingapparatus and particularly `to an arrangement useful in conjunction With uncoiling strip mate- Y rial.
In handling sheet material, it frequently is necessary to coil the same and then to pay off the coiled material to a subsequent apparatus which operates upon the material. In handling sheet soft metals, such as aluminum or brass, extreme care must be taken so as not to damage the same. When the coils are held between end flanges, the flanges tend to damage the edges of the strip. Also, it is frequently necessary to handle coils having a Wide range` of inside diameters so that the coil handling device should be able to accommodate the various coils. When the device is used to pay off material-to succeeding apparatus, it is desirable toadjusted and wherein the tension on the ma-' terial as it is uncoiled can becontrolled.v
In one aspect of the invention, a rotatable means or block is mounted in bearings, said rotatable means having coil holding means -or iingers movable in a direction which is transverse to the axis of the ro-tatable means. The ,iingers can have projections supported on the rotatable means, said projections having rack teeth or similar operating means thereon. Interiorly of the rotatable means there is a coil holding means operating `mechanism or sleeve having teeth thereon engageable With said( rack teeth on the projections, said sleeve being mounted Within said rotatable means so as to .be turnable relative thereto. An operating member movable longitudinally relative to said sleeve or toothed cylinder can be provided, there being a threaded portion between the `longitudinally movable operating memberV and the sleeve so that as the longitudinally movable member is movedV relative thereto, the sleeve will be rotated by `such movement. The threads should have a pitch sufliciently coarse so `as to permit said relative movement of the operating member and sleeve. The longitudinally .movable member preferably is operated by a hy- 12 Claims. (Cl. 242-72) draulc piston mounted on the rotatable means. The rotatable means may have a yoke or similar mechanism operatively connected thereto for moving the entire assembly relative `to the vbearings in which it is supported. This makes it possible to axially position a coil of strip material held by the lingers of the rotatable means. Also, there may be a brake drum mechanism connected with the rotatable means for the purpose of controlling the angular velocity of the coil as strip is fed therefrom.

As previously mentioned, material such as soft n metal strip and the like frequently must be fed from a coiled form to a succeeding operation. A rotatable supporting means or block, indicated generally `by numeral I0, (Figs. 1., 2), may have an end II thereof arranged'to hold and to guide the coil holding means or fingers I2 which are movable inwardly and outwardly relative to the longitudinal axis of the rotatable means I0. Rotatable means I IJ may have an enlarged cylindrical portion I3 (Figs. 1,'2, 4) held in main frame members I4 `and I5. Fingers I2 preferably extend longitudinally along the linger holding portion Il of rotatable means IU, there being 'four fingers or holding means in the illustrated embodiment. 1
Each of the lingers I2 has a transverse guide member or projection I6 held in place on` the portion Il of rotatable member I 0 by cover plates I'I (Figs. 1, `2), said cover plates being' 22, `za within the portion l|| so as to .be rotatable relative to the portion I I. Longitudinallyl movable sleeve operating member- 24 can'have long pitch threads 30fwhichare slidable in the threaded portion 3I of the nger operating means or sleeve 2I. Spring-pressed plunger 32 is normally urged' to the left (Fig. 2) by spring 33, said spring-pressed plunger normally urging: the longitudinally movable operating member 24 to the left. Spring-pressed plunger 32 can beV guided-.by guide member 34 attached to cover 35.
Normally the parts` are arranged so that when operating member 24 is in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, the .coil holding Vfingers will be in retracted position. As Ythe operating member 24 is moved to the right (Fig. 2)-, linger operating will engage the rack teeth on projections I6 so as to move thecoilY holdingV fingers Vinto the desired extended position to engage the interior of a coil,'one of these positions being shownby the dot-dash lines (Fig. l). When itis desired'to axially adjust the rotatable assembly carried by rotatable means I0, hand-wheel14l may be suitablymoved so as to axially move a coil supportedY thereby and thus align the coil with the apparatus'being fed by the device.
. In order to control pay-off speed or the tension in the strip being uncoiled, brake -drum 44 (Figs. 1, 2, 4) can be keyed to the enlarged portion I3 of rotatable member vIl). In a strip material coil handling apparatus, the combination including a rotatable means, inwardly and outwardly movable coil holding finger means mounted on said rotatable means having gear teeth thereon, coil holding means operating mechanism rotatable relative to said rotatable means and connected to the gear teeth of said iinger means for moving said coil holding ringer means inwardly and outwardly, means holding said operating mechanism from longitudinal movement relative to said rotatable means, a longitudinally movable operating member connected to said operating mechanism and adapted to rotate the same as said operating member is moved longitudinally relative thereto, bearing means slidably holding said rotatable means, and means connected with said rotatable means for axially moving the same in said bearing means, so as to adjust the position of an axial coil held by said coil holding means.

In a strip material coil handling apparatus,V the combination including rotatable means, in` wardly and outwardly movable coil holding'iinger` means carried by said rotatable means, said finger means having gear teeth thereon and being movable transversely relative to the axis of the rotatable member, coil holding means operating mechanism carried by said rotatable means and turnable relative thereto, gear teeth on said operating mechanism engageable with the gear teeth on said linger means, means holding said operating mechanism from longitudinal movement relative to said rotatable means, longitudinally movableoperating means connected to said operating mechanism and adapted to rotate the same relative to said operating mechanism upon relative longitudinal movement therebetween, bearing means carrying said rotatable means, adjustable means connected to said rotatable means moving the same axially in said bearing means so as to adjust the position of a coil held thereby, and controllable brake mechanism connected to said rotatable means for controlling the speed thereof.`

In a strip material coil handling apparatus, the combination including a rotatable means, inwardly and outwardly movable coil holding finger means mounted on said rotatable means and having gear teeth, coil holding means operating mechanism rotatable relative to said Yrotatable means and connected to said finger means, gear teeth for moving said coil holding linger means` inwardly and outwardly, means holding said op- 6 erating mechanism in said rotatable means from longitudinal movement relative to said rotatable means, a longitudinally movable operating member screw-threadedly connected to said operating mechanism with a coarse pitch thread and adapted to rotate the same as said loperating member is moved longitudinally relative thereto bearingV said rotatable means and having teeth thereon engageable with the teeth of said finger means, means preventing axial movement of said sleeve relative to said rotatable means, a longitudinally movable operating member screw-threadedly engaged with said sleeve and carried by saidrotatable means, and a fluid motor carried by said rotatable means connected to said longitudinally movable operating member for moving said operating member relative to said sleeve and rotatable means so as to cause rotation of said sleeve relative to said rotatable means.

In a strip material coil handling device, the combination including a frame, a rotatable means journalled in bearing means in said frame, inwardly and outwardly movable coil holding finger means having projecting means mounted on said rotatable means, said projecting means having teeth thereon, a sleeve-like member carried in said rotatable means and having teeth on the exterior thereof engageable with the teeth of said finger means projecting means, means preventing axial movement of said sleeve relative to said rotatable means, longitudinally movable operating means screw-threadedly engaged with said sleeve, a fluid motor carried by said rotatable means connected to said longitudinally movable operating member for moving the same relative thereto, and means mounted on said frame connected with said rotatable means for adjustably moving said rotatable means axially in said bearing means relative to said frame.

In a strip material coil handling device, the combination including a frame, a rotatable means journalled in bearing means in said frame, inwardly and outwardly movable coil holding nger means having projecting means mounted on said rotatable means, said projecting means having teeth thereon, a sleeve-like member carried in said rotatable means and having teeth on the exterior'thereof engageable with the teeth of said finger means projecting means, means preventing axial movement of said sleeve relative to said rotatable means, longitudinally movable operating means screw-threadedly engaged with said sleeve, a fluid motor carried by said rotatable means connected to said longitudinally movable operating member for moving the same relative thereto, means mounted on said frame connected with said rotatable means for adjustably moving said rotatable means axially relative to said frame in said bearing means, and brake mechanism mounted on said rotatable means adjustable to regulate the tension on strip material being payed oli from a coil mounted on said coil holding linger means.
12. In a strip material coil pay-off apparatus,
the combination including a frame, a rotatable means journalled in said frame and having a portion overhanging said frame, a plurality of inwardly and outwardly movable coil holding nger means mounted on said portion overhanging said frame, said finger means having teeth thereon, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said rotatable means, said sleeve having teeth on the exterior thereof engageable with the teethrof said finger means, means preventing axial movement of said sleeve relative to said rotatable means, a longitudinally movable operating member having relatively coarse screw-threads on the eX- terior thereof engageable with screw-threads on the interior of said sleeve, a fluid operated piston mounted on said rotatable means and connected to said longitudinally movable operated member for moving the same in one direction, and resilient means for moving said operating member Yin the opposite direction, longitudinal movement of said operating member relative to said'sleeve causing rotation of said sleeve relative to said portion overhanging said frame.
