ANDREW J. UPHAM, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE WASHBURN 82; MOEN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, AND ISAAC L. ELLWOOD, OF DE KALB, ILLINOIS.
BARBED WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 264,495, dated September 19, 1882. Application filed March 31,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. UPHAM, of Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Wire; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and
in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of a section of my improved barbed wire. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a section on line w :0,
I5 Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow,
same figure.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings, the main fence-wires are marked or lettered A and B, and the barbwire C, and which barb-wire is provided with two U-bends, E E, between the points D D,
the U-bends being connected, in this instance,
by the cross-base F, and' after said barb has been properly applied to the fence-wire A the latter wire is cabled 0r twisted with the main fence-wire B to produce the finished barbed- 0 wire fence represented in the drawings.
It will be observed that the combination of the U-bends between the points of the barbwire serves the purpose of securing the latter to'its fence-wire in a very efficient manner in the combination shown, the U-bends being so made and applied as to give two bearings, each upon the fence-wire which they clamp, thereby preventing any wabbling of the barbpoints.
Having described my improvements in barbed wire, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Let; ters Patent, is
1. The combination, with two main fencewires,'of a two-pointed barb provided with two oppositely curved loops between its ends, which are bent nearly at right angles to the plane of the barbs and upon the same side of them, for the purpose of holding the same to one of the fence-wires, while the other main fence-wire is twisted to rest uponthe base of the barb-points, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. i i
2. The combination, in a wire-barb for use upon fencewires, of two U-bends between the points of the barb for holding the barb t0 the fence-wire.
3. The combination, with fence-wire A, of the barb C, provided with holding-bends E E, connecting-base F, and bevel-points D D, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
