Description

Cf L CLAFF July 7, 1953 BOX Filed llay l, 1947 Patented July 7, 1953 UNITED STATE Clarence' Lloyd Clal, RandolplnfMass., assign'or to Norfolk lPaper Company, Inc., Randolph, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application May 1., 1947, Serial No. 745,208 v The present invention relates to cardboard boxes and more particularly to boxes carrying a removable stock control tag and to the box blank therefor.
It is the object of the present invention to prol consists in the blank and the box made therefrom herein shown and described and more ,particularly dened in the appended claim.
, In the accompanying drawings showing blanks and boxes embodying the present invention, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a flat blank as it comes to the operator of the setting-up machine; Fig.2`
is a corresponding view of one end of the blank after ithas been partially set-'up or folded into box form; Fig. 3 shows in similar Aview the same box end after completion ofthe box ready to receive a stock control tag, and Fig. 4 shows such a tag separately; Fig. 5 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale on lines 5--5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 isa similar View on lines 6-6 of Fig. 8 with the stock tag in position in the box end; Fig. '7 is a horizontal view on lines 1-1 of Fig. 8; and Fig. 8 is an elevation of the end of the box with the stock tag in place.
In the form of the present invention shown in Figs. 1 to 8 of the drawings, the box blank is so cut at one end and its end parts so adhesively secured together that a pocket is formed in such end adapted to receive a stock tag which may be inserted through an opening in the upper edge of the box end. The tag is so positioned in the pocket that the notations or printing on the tag are opposite an opening or window in the box end and in full view of the clerk. When desired, the tag may be raised and removed from the pocket, and thereafter be used in the customary manner to record a sale of the contents of the box and to provide a check on the goods still in stock.
As shown in Fig. 1, the improved blank comprises the usual body or bottom portion I2 with integral side wings I4 having corner lap extensions I6 and with end wings I8 having extensions 2U. Fold or crease lines 22 separate the side wings I4 from the bottom I2, and other fold lines 24 separate the extensions I6 from the side Wings I4. Fold lines 26 separate the end wings I8 from the bottom I2, while lines 28 separate the extensions 28) from the end wings I8.
1 claim. (C1. 229-34) The corner lap extensions I6 of the side wings I4 are separated from theend wings bythe wedge-'- shaped notches 36, and said extensions are short# ened as at 32, to avoid the over-lapping of the extensions` when they are folded inwardly as shown in Fig.'2.
The` box is set-up' in the usual manner by turningthe side wings*I I4 upwardly and the .corner lap extensions I6 inwardly, as shownin Fig. v2. Thek end .wing I8 is then turned upwardly and its extensions 2&1 folded inwardly over the corner laps in the usualmanner, as indicated in Fig. 3. The side wing extensions 'I6 and the lend wings I3 and extensions 20 are secured together by adhesive applied to the end Wings and their extensions., 1
The blank as above described is a common type of blank used extensively for certain lines of boxes, such, for example, as shoe cartons, and in order to adapt it for use with a stock control tag it is subjected inthe blank, forming process to additional cutting or punching operations. Also, in the setting-up operations the adhesive is applied to only the shaded .portion 34 of the end wing at one endof the box and of its extension lfor a purpose hereinafter set forth. In these additional cutting operations the opening 36 in the end wing I8 is formed, and also thetransverse slot 38 lying across the fold line 28 and partly 12h the end wing I8, and partly in the extension The slot 38, it will be noted, is aligned longitudinally of the blank with the adjacent opening 36, and the slot at each end projects beyond the side walls of the opening.
When the end of the boxwith the opening 36 .and slot 38 and the adhesively coated area 34 is folded into box formation, as shown in Fig. 3, a recess or pocket is formed in the end of the box adapted to receive a stock control tag, such as shown in Fig. 4, with the notations or printing positioned opposite the opening or window 36, the tag being inserted and removed through the slot 38 which lies in the top edge of the box end.
The back member or wall of this tag-receiving pocket is formed by the inturned side wing extensions I6, the inner faces of which are adhesively secured adjacent their top edges tothe inturned overlying end wing extension 26, while slot 38 and into the pocket as shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, its top, bottom, and side marginal portions are securely held between the front and back walls of the box end.
It will be observed that the tag receiving pocket is formed in the end of the box when the blank is set upirrthe customary manner, without requiring agiditior i'al or different foldin'gjor pressing mechanism from 'that -used with the conventional or standard form of blank and box. The manipulations of the operator in setting-up the bx yare exactly the same as with the standard blank and box, the only change in` such setting-up operation being that the adhesive Yis Aapplied 'to only a portion of one of the end 4'wings `and n't to its entire surface.
The stock control tag may bejcut'irorn-any suitf able paper or light cardboard, of a size to fit easily within the pocket, and printed with suitable nota"- tions such as the stock number, the size and price, 'as "shown in the drawings. Before the tags Aare inserted in the boxes vthe 'identifying stock num'- b'ers, 'sizes 'and prices will 'be written or stamped upon them, corresponding `to the shoes or other goods packed or to be packed in the boxes.
In the use of the present invention in the form shown in Figs. 1-8, 'a blank is formed as shown in `AFig. -1 by cutting 'and scoringthe pasteboard or other material', Iand ythereafter Yapplying ad'- hesive 'to the shaded areas. The blank is then folded into box form, 'as shown in-FigsxB and 5, and a 'printed Astock control tag, as shown in Fig. 4, is 'inserted as Iindicated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8.
When a sale :is made of Vthe 'lgoods `contained in the box, the tag is removed and used r'st as a sales ticket, 'and then as-a'stdck control ticket. If -desired, 'the box 'may be used again with another stock `control tag appropriately vmarked and inserted in position in the box.
While the present invention jis shown and described in a particularconstruction and arrangement, it is to'fbe vunderstood that it is not "necessarily :limited thereto, but may be embodied in other forms vand arrangements within the scope of kthe 0language of vthe appended claim.
"Having thus described the invention, what 4is claimedis:
"A box of 'cardboard or `the Ylike comprising a end 'wings being turned 'to ferm the outer end walls oi the box v'with 'said end extensions being folded over the top edges of the inner walls and downwardly against the inner faces thereof, the end wings and end extensions being adhesively secured to the inner end walls, one end win having -ian'fopeifiing therethrough intermeidia e 1the tp''dge and the bottom of said box end,
said one end wing and its folded over end extension being cut away in the line of the fold to form a transverse slot extending below the tdp edge of the inner wall of the box end and terminating above said opening, the contacting 'faces of 'the vinn'e'r and outer `end `walls -ad-ja'ent said opening and between said eopening and vsaid transverse slot being free `from adhesive and unattached to one another to form a pocket to receive a removable tag 'passed through 1the transverse :slot and into Aregister with Vsaid opening lin the outer 'end wall.
