1 Claim: (01. 121-175) This invention relates to improvements insmokers articles. 1
An object of this invention is to provide a safety device adapted to be used in combination with a standard cigarette holder or a substantial- 1y standard cigarette holder to cover theciga-e rette whereby persons, for. example, patients in hospitals, convalescent homes, etc., may smoke safely in bed, whereby a lighted cigarette may be rested upon an article as a table or a bed without burning the same. Other objects and features of importance will become apparent in following the description of the illustrated form of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view'of the device in'Figure 1;
Figure 3 isan elevational viewof theqdevice with the closure in the open condition;
Figure 4 is a transverse view taken substantial- 1y on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 and in the direction of the arrows; 1
Figure 5 is a sectionalview taken substantially on the line 5--5 of Figure 2 and in the direction of the arrowsyand j V of'the device with the Figure 6 is an end view cigarette holder omitted.
In carrying out this invention, there ispro- 7 vided a cigarette holder locomprising astem ll having a smoke passage 13 terminating'at its outer end in a bore or enlargement l2 adapted to accommodate a cigarette. 'This cigarette holder In furtherincludesa reduced outer end portion I5 which provides afshoulder [,4 to act A casing I lie removably mounted on the holder 7 Ill. The casing ll' includes,-on its inner end,
a ring 24 which frictionally receives the end portion l5 of the holder [0 and abuts the shoulder l4. Projecting outwardly from the ring 24 is a substantially U -shaped integral trough is comprising an outer end wall '20. The end 'wall 29 rises above the trough, l6 and the upper portion thereof is" rabbetted in a manner to provide a seat 22.
the trough [6 as shown to advantage in Figure 4 of the drawing.
Formed integrally closure 28, is an inwardly andupwardly inclined operating tongue 30. Mounted on theinner endof the casing I! is a substantially U-shaped' spring 36. The spring'36 comprises angular legs 49 and 42 having their free end portions embedded longitudinally in the ring 24. Interposed in the legs 40 and 42 at the angles thereof are coils M. The bight portion 43 of the spring 36 is engaged under tension with the inner face of the tongue for yieldingly urging the V closure 28 toward closed position.
In operation, the standard cigaretteholder I0 is provided with a cigarette. rette and the endof the holder which has the cigarette therein is inserted in the ring '24 of the casing II.
The cigarette may then be lighted, or, more practically, the cigarette may first be lighted. I a 7 I Thereafter, when the person desires to smoke the cigarette, the closure 28 is held open by the vindividuals finger to provide vsufli cient air for proper burning. As soon as the person is finished smoking (temporarily), the closureis permitted to be closed by the spring 36.
In the event that the person inadvertently, as by falling asleep, allows the device with a burning cigarette therein to fall, the closure 28 will automatically close, thereby preventing fire. The device may be used as a matter of convenience for Y temporarily resting the cigarette on any Iairticle without burning that article or causing a e. o V r Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: g
I A 'cigaretteholder comprising a stem having The casing" further compriss a swinging 010-1 1 sure 28 for the opening l8 of the trough l6. The
closure 28 is substantially U-shaped in transverse section and the inner end thereof is pivotally secured t the ring. 24 by pins 32 and 34. The outer or free end of the closure 28 is .engageable on the seat 22'. When-in closed position, the longitudinal marginal portions of .the closure 28 overlapthe corresponding portions of a longitudinal smoke passage thereinssaid smoke V passage including an enlarged outer end portion for the reception of a cigarette, said stem further including an externally reduced outer end portion providing a shoulder, a removable. casing on the stem including a ring encircling the reduced end portion of said stem in abutting engagement with theshoulder, an integral trough of substantially U-shaped cross section projecting longitudinally from the ring, an integral, upstanding end wall on the trough including an enlarged upper portion having a rabbetted edge portionproviding a seat, a'closure ofsubstant ally Ush'aped transverse section having "one endpivotally secured to the ring for vertical swinging movement and adapted to close the trough with its longitudinal marginal portions with the'pivoted end of the d Then the cigaa 3 overlapping the corresponding portions of said References Cited in the file 01' this patent trough, the free end Of Said closure being en- P gageable on the seat, an inwardly and upward- 1y inclined tongue integral with the inner end Number Name Date of the closure, and a substantially U-shaped 5 115321113 Todd S81)? 3 1925 spring for yieldingly urging the closure toward 1 5 2 fiY 2 I 1929 closed position, said spring comprising legs in- 3, g June eluding coils at an intermediate point, the end 2132909 g g 25a? portions of said legs being embedded longitudi- 2,189,878 Brady R Feb. 1940 nally in the ring, the bight portion of said spring 10 being engaged beneath the tongue.
