1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a container and more especially to one which is adapted to be used as a chick box for the shipment of live baby chicks and comprises a corrugated cardboard container with a corrugated cardboard lid and a plurality of transverse partitions therein with the partitions having uprising portions adapted to penetrate coinciding slots in the lid portion and with the partitions having right angular portions at each end thereof which are adapted to be secured to the inner surfaces of the side walls of the container and adapted to project upwardly through the lid portion to provide increased strength for the partition members for supporting superposed boxes thereon. It also embodies the lid member having upwardly extending ears or tabs associated with the right angular portions of the ends of the partitions for not only assisting in supporting the superposed boxes :one above the other in spaced relation to each other, but also prevents the lid from a bottom or intermediate box from becoming loose because the lid member will be held in closed position by the weight of the boxes disposed thereabove even though the lid should not be stapled in position on the box.
This container is preferably made from corrugated board and the container, lid and partitions are provided with suitable perforations therein for ventilation purposes.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an isometric view of the chick box showing the lid in closing position;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing the lid removed;
Figure 3 is an elevation showing one of the chick boxes disposed on top of another chick box;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank from which a container is formed;
Figure 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the lid is formed.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral I ll indicates a blank from which the container is formed which is scored along the lines I! and I2 to form side wall portions l3 and I4, respectively, and it is also scored along the lines [5 and I 6 to form end wall portions I1 and I8, respectively. The end wall I! is scored along the lines 20 and 2| to form fold tabs 2 22 and 23. The end wall 1-8 is scored along the lines 2-4 and 25 to form fold tabs 26 and "2?.
The "blank is out along the lines 3'5, 31, 32 and 33 to separate the tabs 22, 23, 2-6 and 2'5 from the side walls 13 and {-4. The end wall W is folded upwardly along the fold line 1-5 and then the ' end fold tabs 22 and 23 are folded upwardly and towards each other along fold lines 2% and *21, respectively, and end wall 8 is folded upwardly along fold line It and *fold tabs 25 and "21 are folded upwardly along the lines 24 and V The side walls 43 and "M are folded upwardly along the "lines 11 and +2 and with the fold tabs 22, 2 3,, 26 and "21 occupying the "position shown in Figure 2, they are secured to the side walls by any suitable means such as staples 35.
A suitable partition member All is provided having its end portions of substantially greater height than the side wall portions of the container, thus providing extensions H and 4'2.
The ends of the partition 4d are bent at right angles to the :main body of the partition thus forming tabs 44 and 45 which are secured as by staples 46 to the side walls I 3 and M. The partitien 4'9 "has the upper edge of its central portion at a lower elevation than the extensions -41 and 42 for supporting the weight of the lid, to be later described, in association with the support given to the lid by the side walls 43 and M and the end walls 11 and F8. The partition 40 has a verticallydi-sposed slot 50 extending downwardly from the top thereof to substantially half its height for reception of another partition 5! which is slotted at its lower edge as at 52 to fit down into the slot 50. The partition 5| likewise has right angular portions 54 and 55 at its ends abutting against the proximate surfaces of the end walls l1 and I8 and which are secured to the end walls I! and I8 by any suitable means such as staples 51. The partition 5| has extensions and BI near its ends which are adapted to project through suitable slots in the box lid to be presently described and has a lower middle portion of substantially the same height as the side and end walls of the box. The extensions BI] and 6| have suitable slots and 66 therein adapted to be penetrated by suitable tongues on the lid portions, to be presently described. The side walls, end walls, both partitions, and the lid have a plurality of perforations 81 therein for ventilation purposes.
The blank from which the lid of the box is formed is indicated at Ill and is scored along the lines TI and 12 to provide side flaps 13 and 14 3 which are adapted to be turned downwardly and to fit on the exterior of the side walls of the box. The lid blank is also scored along the lines 76 and 11 to provide end flaps 82 and 9B which are adapted to be turned downwardly and to fit on the exterior of the side walls of the box. The lid blank is also scored along the lines 70 and Ti to provide end flaps 82 and 90 which are adapted to be folded downwardly and to fit on the exterior of the top portions of the end walls of the box. the lines 18 and T9 to provide fold flaps 80 and 8! which are adapted to be folded along fold lines 15 and fitted inwardly on the inside of the downturned end wall 82 of thelid. These tabs are secured to the end wall portion of the lid by any suitable means such as staples 83 which are not shown in the drawings, but are identical to left-hand end of the lid shown in Figure. l, The lid blank is also out along the lines 33 and 8'5 to provide the end wall 90 for-the lid and also forms fold flaps 9i and 92 adapted to be folded inwardly along fold lines 84 and fit against the inner surface of the downturned end wall of the lid 99 and secured thereto by staples 83.
The box lid is out along the lines 93 and 94 and 95 and also a flattened U-shaped out line 96 appears at the central portion of the side and ends of the lid and like reference characters will apply to the four out lines of the two ends and two sides of the lid. The cut lines .94 and 90 provide a slot 98 and a flap 99 which is turned upwardly along its fold line, such as H, 12, 1B and 11, to provide an uprising flap integral with the lid and of the same height as the extensions M, 42, 60 and 6! and right angular flaps iii, 45, 54 and 55. a
The lid after being folded. and having its portions stapled together, is then inserted over the box as shown in Figure 1. If desired, staples I can be passed througuh the fiaps 99 and the right angular portions 54 and 55 to secure the lid against intentional removal to loose the chicks therefrom, but of course, this is not necessary to prevent accidental removal because except for the topmost box when the containers are stacked in the position shown in Figure 3, one above the other, the superposed boxes will rest on the flaps 99 andprevent upwardly movement of the lid and therefore will insure-ventilation between the superposed boxes and prevent collapse of the supporting means on one box allowing the box disposed immediately above the same to rest on the main lid portion and thus The lid blank is also out along .I claim:
out ch ventilation to the chicks to an extent to where they might become smothered, as they would only have cross ventilation from the side and end walls.
The lid at two of the slots 98 has projections or tongues I02 for fitting into the slots and 66.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claim.
A'chiok box and a lid portion therefor, the box being substantially rectangular and having side walls and end walls and having a longitudinally extending partition and a transversely disposed partition, the central portions of the partitions being of substantially the same height as the side and end walls of the box and the end portions of the partitions being substantially higher than the side walls and end walls of the box, the partitions at their ends each having a right angular portion of the same height as the ends of the partitions and secured to the inside surfaces of the end walls and the side walls of the box, a lid member having downturned side wall portions extending from fold lines near each edge of the lid member, said lid member having slots out therein for receiving the end portions of the partitions and the lid also having a plurality of the tabs cut therefrom and each tab being provided with a free end and said tabs being foldable upwardly along the fold lines of the side and end portions of the lid, and lying against the right angular portions of the ends of the partitions and said-tabs having their upper edges terminating within the same plane, at least two of the end portions of the partitions and the upturned tabs on the lid portion being secured together.
