, chicks, particularly'that character of box having a slotted lid with portions of the innerpartitions extending upwardly therethrough; to provide spacing devices for supporting superimposed.
boxes, referencebeing had to Letters Patent No.
1,781,279,, issued November 11, 193cm; Robert-A.-
Gorsuch for Shippin8.bbx for, chicks";
The purposeofthisinvention is to-provide .a... shippingbox such as shownand described in the above-entitledLetters .Patent with locking, de-
vices foriholding the lid in place comprising improvements over those heretofore employed. for;
a like purpose.
One feature "of, the invention resides-in splitting/the partitionsalongthe top fold ashort; way from the outer or, inner ends thereof and 1 cutting the ,adjacent portion of the walls back-.,
wardly. to provide end tabswhich may be bent 2o laterally awayfroin-each other to extend over I I laterally extending partitions areadapted to exthe upper surface of the lid when in placeto pro'videfadouble lock therefor at their respec tive locations. Thus, one set of'locks, preferably on the partition extending. longitudinally; of the 5 box, may engagethe cover adjacent. itsendsfor holding the ends of the cover tightly in place on the box. Anotherpair o ylQcks'may be provided on the inner ends of thetransversepartition for x locking the central portion ofv the lid; in place.
35 advantage, as distinguishedfrom av singlelock of this character, in doublydnsuring: the lock-wv v provided a-pair of double locking tabsl8. Said tabs are formed by cutting' the' fold I6 back ingot the; lid, whereas a single lock may accidentally move into alignment with the partition and slot in the lid so as to release the latter andl 40 cause possible danger to the chicks in that location.
A further feature oi. the invention resides in the particular construction of the ends of the partitions wherethey engage with the side walls 45 of the box.
Other objects and features of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawing and the following description and claims:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the box with 50 the cover in locked position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box with the cover removed. Fig.
3 is a layout of one end of the longitudinal partition.
- In the drawing there is illustrated a shipping 56 box for chicks including the perforated end walls formed therein.
I0. side -walls LI and bottom i2. Mounted there-.- in-there arelongitudinal partitions. l3 and lateral partitions ll which may be perforated. A portion .of each of said partitions is adapted. to extend upwardly throughsuitable slots formed in 5 the lid 15 of the boxto provide spacing members l3 arand Ma. Said-members are adapted to support a superimposed box in spaced-relation to the pp rting b x. l
As illustrated herein the partitions are formed 0 of double thickness, being folded over .uponv themselves whereby the upper edge forms a fold l5.. Preferablythe-partitions are formed oflined corrugated board with the corrugations extending gverti'cally forstrengthening purposes Said 5" partitions are cutaway adjacent their central. portion, as indicated at 11, so as .t'o'permit of the centralfportionfl .of the lid being without slots The opp'ositeends of both the longitudinal and tend outwardly beyond the walls of the box adja cent the upper edges thereof through, suitable slots provided therein. The lid ['5 which fits over the box and through which the portions l3c and uaextend, melts side wallsor flanges so formed as to fit over the expos'ed'ends of the partitions; The'purpose of this arrangement is toprovide a bulge aboutthe'upper-portion of thebox'when I the Hells in place which will serve-to space the walls'of the box from the-next adjacent box when stackedone against the other, 'thereby preventingcirculatiori 'of' air throughthe apertures ink the wall of the box fror'n'being shut off.
On the outer ends of the longitudinallyex tending-portions l3a of the partition l3 there is slightly-further than the extension thereof'bedouble thickness of p'artitionfli backwardly to the same extent and slightly above the upper edge of the wall Ill. The tabs so formed normally lie together in the plane of the partition so that they may readily pass through the corresponding slot formed in the lid when mounted in place thereover. Upon the lid being mounted in place, said tabs may then be bent back to extend in opposite directions and at right angles to the plane of the partition and the correspond- 5 ing slot of the lid. In this position, the bottom edges of the tabs engage the top surface of the lid to lock it in place and hold it snugly against. the upper edge of the walls 01' the box. The inner ends of the projecting portions Ila of the holding that portion thereof snugly against the upper edges of the partitions l3 and I4.
Each of the projecting portions Ila of the par titions l3 are provided intermediate their ends with an aperture through which a cord may extend and be held in place for tying a group of boxes together or providing means for conveniently carrying the same.
As illustrated in Fig. 3, the outwardly projecting end portions 2| of the partition l3 have a bayonet tip 22 for looking over the outer surface of the end wall II), as indicated in Fig. 2, and one of the sides'is provided with a tab 23 which folds laterally to extend from or past the edge 24 of the other side so as to bear against the inner surface of the end wall "I and be stapled or locked thereto for further anchoring and securing the partition in place. The end walls of the laterally disposed partitions I4 are walls H.-
It will thus be noted from the foregoing that the projecting portions I31: and Ila of the partitions are so formed as to not only provide suitable and convenient'locking devices for the lid but to provide double locks to prevent unlocking, strengthening the locking action and locate said locking action both at the extreme ends of the box and the central portion where most needed, 40 and the double wall feature is further taken ad vantage of to firmly anchor the partitions to the walls.
The invention claimed is: v 1. A shipping box for chicks including end and side walls, longitudinally and laterally extending partitions mounted within said walls, each of said partitions being of double thickness and folded along their upper edges and provided with 50 cut away portions intermediate their ends and centrally thereof, a removable lid for the box having slots formed therein through which the folded over portions of the partitions may extend, and double locking devices formed on op- 55 posite outer ends of the folded over portions of the longitudinally extending partitions and on the inner ends of the laterally extendingpartitions, said locking devices being adapted to engage the upper surface of the lid for locking the 60 outer edges thereof againstv the corresponding walls of the box, and the central portion thereof similarly formed and connected with the side against the corresponding cut away portions of the partitions.
2. A shipping box for chicks including end and side walls, longitudinally and laterally extending partitions mounted within said wallsf said partitions being provided with cut away portions intermediate their ends and centrally thereof, a removable lid for the box having slots formed therein through'which the other portions of the partitions may extend, locking devices formed on opposite outer ends of the longitudinally extending partitions for engaging the lid and looking it against the end walls of the box, and locking devices formed on the ends of the upwardly extending portion of the laterally extending partitions adjacent the cut away portion thereof for engaging the upper surface of the central part of the lid and looking it against the cut away portions of said partitions.
