1 Claim.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in eye shields, and the principal object of the invention is to provide an eye shield of the character herein described, which may be conveniently and effectively sustained in position over an injured eye without the use of adhesive tape which, as is well known, is extremely difficult and painful to remove, the invention contemplating the provision of improved means for sustaining the eye shield in place without interfering with proper vision of the other eye.

An important feature of the invention resides in its extreme simplicity of construction, in its adaptability for expeditious and convenient installation or removal, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects and features in View and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in use;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 22 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the invention per se; and

Figure 4 is a side elevational view illustrating a modified embodiment of the invention in use.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, more particularly to Figures 1-3 inclusive, the invention consists of an eye shield which is designated generally by the reference character II] and embodies in its construction a substantially circular, conveXo-concave, foraminous eye shielding member or disc [2 which is provided at its peripheral edge with an annular pad element M, the upper and lower portions of the member I2 being provided with pairs of transversely spaced slots [6, 13 as shown.

A pair of flexible tapes 2!) are threaded through the respective slots 16, I8 of the member l2, the tapes 20 having convergent ends which are suitably secured as at 22 to flexible bands 24.

A vertically elongated spreader strap 26 is disposed between the tapes 29 at a point between the member I2 and one of the bands 24, the upper and lower end portions of the strap 26 2 being provided with pairs of transversely spaced slots 28, 30 through which the tapes are threaded.

When the invention is placed in use, the member I2 is positioned over the injured eye and the tapes 29 are extended in opposite directions so that the bands 24 are disposed and tied at the back of the head, this being accomplished without employing adhesive tape and without impairing the vision of the other eye, since the spreader strap 26, being located forwardly of the ear, will sustain the tapes 20 in spaced relation, above and below the eye as shown in Figure 1, so as not to intefere with vision.

In a modified embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying Figure 4, the spreader strap 26 is substituted by an arcuate strap 32 having slots through which the tapes 2!! are threaded, this embodiment also having bands (corresponding to the bands 24) at the convergent ends of the tapes 20 which bands are tied or buckled together at the back of the head, as indicated at 34. The arcuate configuration of the spreader strap 32 permits the same to be easily positioned behind the ear of the user as shown in Figure 4, rather than forwardly of the ear as shown in Figure 1.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the claimed as new is:

An eye shield comprising a substantially circular disc adapted to cover only one eye, a first pair of tape members connected at vertically spaced points to said disc and extending to one side and rearwardly therefrom in convergent relation, a band connected to the convergent ends of the first pair of tape members, a second pair of tape members connected at vertically spaced points to said disc and including substantially parallel front portions extending to the other side of the disc, a vertically elongated spreader strap provided in upper and lower portions thereof with slots having intermediate portions of the second pair of tape members extendinvention, what is 3 ing therethrough, vertical spacing of said slots conforming substantially to the vertical spacing of the points of connection of the second pair of tape members to said disc whereby to sustain said front portions of the second pair of tape a members in spaced vertical relation to expose the other eye therebetween, said second pair of tape members including convergent portions extending rearwardly from said spreader strap, and a second band connected to the convergent ends of the second pair of tape members and adapted for tying with the first band.
