(01; 137-735) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in gaskets, and more particularly to a gasket for use between a carburetor and-the intake manifold of an engine, and embodying the provisionof. an air control Valve to admit air directly into the intake manifold when desired.
' 1 An important object of the invention is to provide means for overcoming the feeding of an overload mixture from the carburetor to an en- 'gine'and to adjust the ratio'of fuel and air mixture at a point between the carburetor and the intake manifold to save fuel and to improve the QP m iencrqf h n ne- A further object is valve connected directly in the gasket between the carburetor and the intake manifold whereby air may be easily and quickly supplied to the intake manifold of the engine.
A still further object is to provide a gasket plate having a valve seat formed therewith and a guide bracket for a slidable valve and wherein the plate and bracket are stamped from sheet metal or other suitable material for mounting as a unit with the gasket.
Another object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a carburetor showing the valve mounted in position thereon;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view with parts of the gasket broken away and shown in section;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2; V
Figure 4 is a perspective view of'the gasket insert or plate for the valve; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the valve.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a gasket plate or insert of a type suitable for use between a carburetor 6 and the air inlet 1 leading from the inlet manifold (not shown) of an internal combustion engme.

A bracket 13 is stamped from the material of the gasket plate 5, or otherwise suitably integrally formed therewith, the bracket being of substantially U-shape and projects horizontally outwardly from the edge of the gasket plate .Valve seat II and with the inner leg M of the bracket bent downwardly from the edge of the gasket plate 5 and the outer leg E5 of the bracket'extending upwardly in spaced parallel relation to the inner leg M.
The bracket I3 is formed with a longitudinal slot l6 which extends upwardly into each leg l4 and I5 and the inner leg 14 at each side of slot I6 is formed with shoulders l1 and on which the inner edge of a fiat spear head shaped valve l8 rests for sliding movement inwardly and out- 1 to seat on the valve seat The valve 18 is provided with a valve stem [9 which projects outwardly through the slot in outer leg l5 of bracket l3 and a coil spring 20 is positioned on the valve stem with the inner end of the spring bearing against the valve [8 and the outer end of the spring bearing against the outer leg 15 of the bracket. Nuts 2| are threaded on the outer end of stem I9 to adjust the valve with respect to the seat I l A pull cord or wire 22 is attached to the outer end of valve stem l9 and leads to a position for convenient operation by the driver of a motor vehicle or the like in which the device is mounted.
A pair of wire guides 23 are secured at one end to the bolts or screws 10 and are formed with aligned eyes 24 at their opposite ends po sitioned outwardly from the valve stem [9 and through which the pull wire 22 extends to subject the valve to a straight outward pulling force.
In the operation of the device, the gasket plate 5 is placed in the carburetor as indicated in Figure 1 and the valve l8 slidably mounted in bracket [3 to seat on valve seat II at one side of the valve plate. Spring 20 holds the valve closed.
The valve is opened by pulling on pull wire 22 when, for any reason, an additional supply of air 3 is desired for mixing with the fuel in the carburetor.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device Will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: v
1. A gasket comprising a fiat split ring-like body, said split forming an air inlet in one side of the gasket extending from the inner to the outer edge thereof, the edges of said split converging relatively inwardly of the gasket and forming the sides of the inlet and a valve seat tapering inwardly of said gasket, a U-shaped bracket projecting outwardly from the outer edge of the gasket adjacent said inlet and having its inner end leg depending from the gasket at the outer end of the inlet, said bracket having a slot in its outer end leg, a fiat tapering valve head fitting in said inlet with side edges seating against said valve seat, said valve and gasket being of uniform thickness, said valve head slidably resting on said inner end leg for sliding movement thereon to open said inlet, a valve stem on said valve head slidable in said outer end leg slot for guided movement to slide said valve head outwardly of said seat, a coil spring on said stem interposed between said valve head and said outer end leg of said bracket to tension said valve head against outward movement.
2. A gasket comprising a flat, split, ring-like body, the edges of the body forming the split being laterally spaced and relatively converging to form an air inlet in one side of the body extending from the inner to the outer edges of said body and forming a substantially V-shaped valve seat, a bracket projecting outwardly at said one side of the body adjacent said inlet, a spring loaded valve slidably supported on said bracket and including a flat substantially V-shaped valve head in said inlet engaging the valve seat, said valve and gasket being of uniform thickness to close said inlet, and said valve being movable outwardly of said gasket to open said inlet, and actuating means connected to the valve for moving the same outwardly of said inlet.
