Description

- (No Model.)
D. J. SGHULTB.
' GAR COUPLING.
No. 264,108. Patented Sept. 12, 1882,.
WITNESSES IJV'VEJVTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID J. SOHULTE, OF BEATTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-CUUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 264,108, dated September 12, 1882.
Application filed July 1, 1682. (N0 model.)
companying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the end of a car-platform equipped with my improved coupling, the same being tilted so as to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a front view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates toself acting or automatic car-couplings; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the draw-head, which is arranged to slide longitudinally in a hanger or bracket, B, upon the under side of the car.
O is a vertical plate, secured in rear of the hanger B, and forming a back wall for the latter. The lower end of plate 0 is bent forwardly through hanger B, to which it is attached, and which is thereby strengthened.
Draw-headAhasarearward-projectingstem, E, extending through a hole, F, in the back wall or plate, 0.
G is a spring, which is coiled upon the stem E between a pair of washers, H I, which abut respectively against the rear end of the drawhead and the back wall, (J.
J is a pin driven transversely through stem E to prevent its being pulled out of washer I. By this arrangement the draw-head may slide, and the spring will act longitudinally in either direction.
The mouth K of the draw-head has a recess,
L, in its upper side, in which is pivoted a beveled tongue, M, which is forced in a downward direction by a suitable spring, N.
Attached to the rear free end of the tongue is a rod, 0, projecting upward through a slot, P, inthe draw-head, and having an eye, Q, at its upper end.
R is a lever pivoted to the top of the drawhead, near its rear end, and extending forwardly through the eye Q.
S is a crank-lever pivoted to the car, or to the platform of the same, and having an operating-arm, T, and a downward-projecting arm, U, provided with an eye, V, to receive the front end of lever R.
7 When in operation the draw-head moves longitudinally the lever It is free to play in the eye V of lever-arm T, by which it may at any time be raised so as to raise the tongue M and uncouple the cars. When the cars come together the link of one draw-head will enter the mouth of the next one, engaging the tongue M and completing the coupling instantly and automatically.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination, with the longitudinally sliding draw-head A, of the bracket or hanger B and back plate or wall, 0, the lower end of which is bent forwardly through hanger B and attached to the latter, as set forth.
2. The combination of the longitudinallysliding draw-head having tongue M, upwardprojecting rod 0, having eye Q, and lever B, extending forwardly through said eye, with the crank-lever S, having operating-arm T and arm U, provided with eye V, to receive the front end of lever B, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID JULIUS SGHULTE.
