It is an object of my invention, to provide a simple and effective implement for operating upon the hair in tufts, each comprising a number of separate locks, and impart thereto the form desired.

The invention is clearly set forth in the ensuing description, taken with the drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention.

The body of the curler is a round stem or rod I having at one end a fixed tubular head 2.

Attached to the head in longitudinal position is a comb 3. The rod or stem is hollow over a great part of its length and has a spring i in a bore extending from said end inward. At each side the hollow portion of the rod has slots open through said end. On the outside of the body I is a slidable head 'i' having on the end presented to the xed head 2, a ange or rim 8.

The head 'i carries a pivoted clip 9 which is transversely curved so that it conforms to the shape of the rod I. This clip has arms EB which extend half way around the stem I and are perforated at the ends to receive a pivot pin I I. This pin passes through the slots 5 and the inner end of the spring seats against the pin Il. The clip when folded against the rod l, with the pin II at the inner ends of the slots 6, has its free end iiush with the extremity of the rod opposite the extremity carrying the head 2 and comb 3.

extension, 12,', and, this.v eigtenson is`v preferably. tapered towards the outer end and rounded on the edge so that it can easily be slipped into the space I5. When the sleeve I is moved to insert the extension I2 as far as it will go, the portions Ill of the rod I are compressed slightly, but when the extension is pulled out the rubber I3 expands and the portions I4 move back to normal positions. The rubber ensures a tight fit of the extension I2 in the head 2,

vThe clamps of Figures 7, 8 and 9 each have a pair of jaws I5 and II with lugs I8 connected by pivot pins I9. At one end are the handles 2i? between which is mounted a fixed compression spring which acts to separate the handles and move the jaws toward each other. The jaw I6 as shown in Figure 7 has prongs 2I between which is a blade 22, and the jaw II is iiat, as indicated at 23, with its surface at right angles to the blade 22. The blade 22 can be omitted, or this blade retained and the prongs ZI omitted as indicated in Figures 8 and 9. The rod I and clip 9 can be made each with a notch 2li in the end remote from the head 2, as indicated in Figure 6.

In practice the attendant smooths out a tuft of hair with the comb 3; rst pushing the sleeve to force the extension I2 into the space I5. The

opposite end of the rod is then put into contactl with the subjects scalp and the clip 9 is rst raised. The end of tuft 25 is secured to the rod i by laying the clip 9 against it, and the rod is turned to wind the hair upon the rod. The ringlet or curl is now engaged by one of the clamps, such as the one shown in Figure 7 or 9, with the flat jaw 23 under the adjacent end of the rod I and the blade 22 in the recesses 2d. The body of the curler is then removed, but the ringlet is compressed and held by the clamp, and it can then be given the usual treatment with lotion and Washed with water to complete the process. The jaw 23 is wide enough to span and cover the recesses 24 in the rod I and clip 9, or it may enter the recess.

When the clamp is made without the blade 22, as in Figure 8, the recesses 2d in the rod I and clip 9 are not needed and they can be omitted. Instead of clamps I can even use hair pins, but these are not so easy to manipulate.

The implement is thus well adapted to serve its purpose and gives excellent results. My invention is of course not limited to the exact details of construction, but may be varied in any respects without changing the general design of the curler.

The spring of the clamp is shown at 26, coiled around the pivot pin I9. Instead of a spring a rubber sleeve enveloping the clamp about at the base of the prongs 2l can be employed.

Having described my invention, what I believe to be new is:

l. An implement for treating hair comprising a rod-shaped body, a head on one end, the body having a bore extending into it from said end, slots in the sides open at said end, a compressible element in said bore at said end, the head enveloping said end, a closure member in the bore at said end and engaging the adjacent extremity of the compressible element, a sleeve movably mounted on the body, a clip on the sleeve, a pivot pin extending through the bore and projecting through said slots, the ends of the clip being engaged by the pin, the inner end of said element abutting said pin.

2. An implement for treating hair comprising a rod-shaped body, a head on one end, the body having a bore extending into it from said end, slots in the sides open at said end, a compressible 4 element in said bore at said end, the head enveloping said end, a closure member in the bore at said end and engaging the adjacent extremity of the compressible element, a sleeve movably mounted on the body, a clip on the sleeve, a pivot pin extending through the bore and projecting through said slots, the ends of the clip being engaged by the pin, the inner end of said element abutting said pin, said sleeve having an extension, the implement having a space under the head to receive said extension when the sleeve and clip are moved on the body towards the head.
