Application March 8, 1952, Serial No. 275,554
1 Claim.
This invention relates to spoons especially adapted for feedin liquids to small infants.
In the feeding of infants, it is obviously desirable to utilize a spoon which minimizes the possibility of liquid flowing over the sides and also prevents infants from obstructing the passage of fluid from the bowl to the mouth by means of their lips. No adequate solution to this problem is presented by the conventional spoon since a slight tilting of the spoon results in liquid running over the sides soiling clothes and other surrounding objects. Moreover, due to the open type bowl construction, an infant can easily prevent proper feeding by pressing his lips tightly about the spoon surface.
Consequently, the prime purpose of this invention is to create a spoon which will substantially prevent overflow from the bowl simultaneously preventing the infant from blocking flow with his lips.
A further object of this invention relates to the formation of a spoon with means for restricting flow from the bowl to the portion of the spoon which first enters the mouth.
A still further object of this invention relates to a spoon with a lid structure that prevents lips from being pressed completely about the liquid retaining surface.
Other objects and structural details will be apparent from the subjoined description taken in part with the drawings forming a part of this specification and in which;
Figure l is a perspective view,of the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 4 is a section taken through 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the spoon ID of Figure 1 comprises the handle H, and the specially constructed bowl l2. As in the conventional construction, the bowl I2 is of ellipsoidal shape with the longer or major axis extending in alignment with the handle ll. Lids l3 and I4 are attached to the bowl l2 sealing off the bowl perimeter excepting for the outlet portion [5 located at the forward and narrowmost end of the spoon. As best seen in Figures 1 and 2, the lids have opposing inner curvilinear edges [6 and I1 forming an opening at the spoon top which varies from the wide central portion l8 to the narrow end portion 20. The opening adjacent lid portions [8 and I9 is relatively large to allow liquid to be easily introduced therein, whereas the narrow opening adjacent lid portion 20 is so formed to prevent fluid from spilling or splashing out from the bowl when it is introduced into an infants mouth. Moreover by restricting the top opening adjacent the outlet IE, it is virtually impossible for an infant to block the passage of fluid from the spoon by contracting the lips.
In operation, liquid is poured into the spoon through the opening near lid portions l8 and I9, and introduced into the infants mouth by inserting outlet portion l5 into the childs mouth. Lids l3 and I4 prevent spillage and simultaneously prevent the infant from blocking flow by contracting his lips about the bowl portion.
It is obvious from the foregoing description, that instant device fully achieves the objects outlined.
It should also be understood that numerous changes in shape, size and material may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is:
A spoon for liquids comprising a handle and a bowl, said bowl having a doubly curved contour with a relatively narrow outlet end, a top plate having a central longitudinally extending slot, the said slot dividing the plate into two sections, said sections being attached along their outer edges to the bowl perimeter the said slot having a widened portion near the rear end of the slot to permit the feeding of liquid into the bowl, the front end of the slot being widened to provide the said outlet for the spoon, the front ends of each of said sections being rounded and preventing lips from sealingly contacting the bowl surface.
