Description
'(Mdel.) A.. P. ROUTT.
STIRRUP.
No. 263,966. Patented sept. 5, 1882.
t UNITED STATES y PATENT OFFICE.
ANSELL P. ROUTT, F DANVILLE, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM THOMAS, OF SAME PLACE.
STIRRUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,966, dated September 5, 41882. Application filed July 15, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANsELL P. RoU'rr, of Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania, and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
This inventionrelates to certain improvements in stirrups; and it has for its object to Y provide a stirrup that will not be liableto give way or break, which will bear more weight than the ordinary wooden stirrup made up of separate parts, which will not rattle when taken hold of in mounting the horse, and which maybe more cheaply ,constructed than theordinary Wooden stirrup. These objects I attain by the means 'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved stirrup; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 a view partly in sidev elevation and partly in section of a modification of my improved stirrup. Y The letter A indicates a stirrup, whichi formed from a solid block of wood, either oak, hickory, or other Wood of suflicient strength 'for the purpose. The upper part of the stirrup is recessed, as indicated by the letter B, forming a seat for the stirrupstrap, and is provided with a facing or cushion of leather,
rubber, or other yielding material to givean elastic support to the foot of the rider. The lower portion of the stirrup is also faced with rubber or leather to form an elastic bearing for the foot of the rider, and to prevent all danger ot' slipping in cold weather if the stirrup should become clogged with snow or ice. The said facing may be fastened directly to the stirrup by means of nails or otherwise, or it may be secured in recesses at each side, as indicated in Fig. 1.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings the stirrup is formed with a vertical mortise, C, and is provided with a transverse pin, D. In thisinstance the stirrup-strap passes around the transverse pin and up through the vertical mortise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
An improved article of manufacture consistin g of a stirrup formed whole from a block of wood recessed to receive the supportingstrap, such recess being provided with a yielding facing, all 'substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in
presence of two witnesses,'this 14th day of 6o Witnesses:
M. H. J ENNINGs, R. R. MILLER.
