This invention relates to hair clippers, and more particularly has reference to a combined guide and comb attachment therefor.

The present application is a continuation in part of my ccpending application, Serial No. 205,772, filed January 12, 1951.

By way of background, it may be noted that in the conventional use of hair clippers, it is common to employ therewith a comb for regulating the length and evenness of cut. Obviously, a high degree of skill is required in the joint manipulation of the hair clippers and comb if the desired result is to be obtained.

In my copending application I have illustrated a comb attachment for a hair-clippin device, said attachment being particularly designed to facilitate, without the use of a separate comb, the uniform cutting of the hair to an even length.

In accordance with the present invention, I embody in said attachment a guide member novelly designed to provide a rockable mounting for the hair clippers and comb attachment, having slidable contact with the head of the person whose hair is being cut, whereby said hair clippers and comb attachment may be adjustably tilted to elevations selected by the user for cutting the hair to a selected length.

It is an important object of the present invention in this connection to provide a combined comb and guide attachment which can be readily attached to conventional hair clippers.

Another important object is to provide a combined comb and guide attachment that will be simply designed, will have no moving parts, and which will nevertheless be swiftly adjustable relative to the scalp of the person whose hair is being cut.

Yet another object is to provide an attachment as stated that will not require modification in any respect of the hair clippers on which it is mounted, and which will not interfere with normal operation of said clippers.

Referring to the drawings:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a conventional hair clipper, an attachment formed in accordance with the present invention being mounted thereon;

Figure 2 is an inverted, perspective view of the attachment on an enlarged scale;

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the attachment taken substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 2.

Referring to the drawings in detail, a conventional hair clipper l is provided with the head 2 formed at its front end with the usual tapered of the head disposed contiguous to the guard 3 2 guard 3. This is a wholly conventional construction, and does not constitute per se part of the present invention, the hair clipper being illustrated purely as an example of one type of hair clipper on which the invention may be conveniently mounted.

The combined comb and guide attachment includes a main body 4 of plane information adapted to underlie the head 2, and corresponding to said head in respect to outer configurations and dimensions.

Formed integrally with the main body 4 at the front end thereof is a forward extension 5 disposed at an obtuse angle to said main body, the forward extension 5 being provided with a plurality of elongated teeth extended longitudinally thereof.

At opposite sides of the body 4 I form upon said body the upstanding lugs 6 which may be integrally or otherwise formed with inwardly facing abutments 1, whereby the attachment may be slidably positioned in underlying relationship to the head 2, and thereafter remain as a fixed, but removable, attachment to the head by reason of the frictional gripping of the head by the lugs and abutments. Limiting movement of the attachment upon the head in one direction are raised portions 8 formed upon the upper surface of the forward extension 5, said raised portions engaging the front edge of the guard 3.

Fixedly mounted upon said main body 4 and underlying the body is a guide or fulcrum member including the angularly related guide portions 9 and I0 integrally joined and disposed at an obtuse angle to one another to define a rounded fulcrum II.

If desired, the guide portions 9 and 10 may be formed with large openings 12 and I3.

The guide member described above is fixedly connected along its front and rear edges to the under side of the main body 4 in any suitable manner.

It is to be noted that the front guide portion 8 is disposed at a wide, downwardly facing obtuse angle to the forward extension 5. The cutting portion of the clipper head 2, that is, that part is located at the apex of the angle. As a result, if the entire device is tilted forwardly! from the position in which it is illustrated in Figure 1, upon the scalp of a person whose hair is to be cut, the free end of the forward extension, and that end of the front guide portion 9 remote from said extension, provide a two-point support for the clippers whereby the cutting portion of the hair clippers is positioned close to, but nevertheless spaced above, the scalp of said person, so as to cut the hair to a uniform, short length, the guide member providing the means slidable over the scalp of said person that will support the hair clippers at a selected elevation relative to said scalp.

Assuming that it is desired that the hair be cut to a selected length longer than the minimum length discussed above, it is necessary only that the hair clipper be tilted backwardly, whereupon the hair clipper and the comb attachment will rock upon the fulcrum ll until the cutting portion of the hair clipper is spaced above the scalp the desired distance.

Thereafter, the hair clipper, held at the desired position in tiltable adjustment, is moved over the scalp, sliding upon the fulcrum, and the forward extension will comb the hair in advance of the clipping portion of the hair-cutting device.

The device is so formed in this connection as to be capable of being rocked backwardly until the rear guide portion it] lies fiat upon the scalp, in which position of the hair clipper the hair will be cut to a maximum, uniform length. Again, the cutting of the hair to the maximum length is accomplished merely by sliding the hair clipper over the scalp of the person whose hair is being cut, the device now sliding upon the rear guide portion I0.

As an important characteristic of the invention, I believe it worthy of note that the device formed in accordance with the invention is attached with speed and facility to a conventional hair clipper, and is capable of being removed with equal speed and facility. Further, in mounting the device upon the hair clipper, no modification of the hair clipper construction is required.

It is a further important characteristic that once mounted the device provides a combined comb and guide attachment, whereby hair may be cut to a selected, uniform length. In operation of the hair clipper with the device attached, the cutting bar of the hair clipper will be swingable in an arc around the fulcrum point H, and when swung to a desired elevation relative to the scalp of the person whose hair is being cut, may be retained at said elevation, after which the hair clipper with the attachment thereon is slidably moved over the scalp to cut the hair to the selected length.

What is claimed is:

A combined comb and guide attachment for a hair clipper having a cutting head provided with a cutting portion along one edge, comprising a plane main body proportioned to lie flat against the under side of the cutting head of said hair clipper; means at opposite sides of said main body frictionally engageable with said cutting head to retain the main body in fixed relationship to said cutting head with the front edge of the'main body substantially in registration with said cutting portion; a forward extension integrally formed upon the front edge of said main body, said forward extension being formed with a plurality of elongated, parallel teeth, the forward extension being disposed at a wide obtuse angle to the main body; and a guide member rigidly attached to and underlying main body, said guide member being of angular crosssection, and having front and rear guide portions disposed at an obtuse angle to one another, said front and rear portions being respectively disposed at acute angles to the main body, the front guide portion being related at a wide obtuse angle to said forward extension, said lastnamed angle facing outwardly from the under side of the main body and said front edge of the body being displaced at the apex of the lastnamed angle, to locate the cutting portion of the head a predetermined distance from a scalp when those end of the front guide portion and of the extension disposed at the outer ends of the legsof the last-named obtuse angle are placed in con.- tact with the scalp, the front and rear guide portions being integrally joined below the main body and forming a fulcrum portion spaced below the main body and on which the cutting head is rockable to selected positions of adjustment relative to a scalp on which supported.
