Positioned inwardly adjacent the straightening elements is a pair of relay boxes I, I each of which contains a pair of switches (not shown) operableto control operation of a reversible motor in the usual manner which pivots its associated feeding arm. The side edges of the web material are en-f' gaged and grasped at the forward ends of the feeding arms by the usual tenter clamps or tenter pins arranged on endless conveyors, the forward endsof which are carried by the feeding arms. These clamps convey the material into the drying machine in the direction shown in Fig. 1. The tenter clamps are of conventional type and thus are not shown in the drawings. It is important, therefore, that the feeding arms maybe pivoted rapidly about their axes independently of each other to follow the variations in the transverse width of the web I. For this reason, each of the control elements 8 controls the operation of a reversible motor (not shown) by means of the switches in the relay boxes and cause rotation of the feeding arms back and forth respectively in relation to a particular normal position. For example, each control element 8 is adapted to engage two switches in its associated relay box I. When a control element is moved outwardly from the center line of the web it closes one of the switches'and causes operation of the motor in-the direction which moves the feeding arms away from the midpoint of the web. In a similar manner, actuation of the control element in the opposite-direction reverses the operation of the motor and moves the feeding arm toward the midpoint of the web.
In accordance with the present invention means are provided for interconnecting the edge straighteners 3, 4 and 6 with the feeding arms l0, ID to cause the edge straighteners to move transversely of the web along with the feeding arms. However, it is desirable to prevent movement. of the edge straighteners when the feede ing arms are only moved a slight distance-due to small variations in'the transverse Width of the web' in order to prevent a huntingeffect in the operation of the machine. This is accomplished by providing a loose connection joint 9, 9 between the' support boxes 5, 5 and the feeding arms I0, 10. This loose connection is illustrated in Fig. 3 and interconnects the extreme forward end of the feeding arms Ill with the rear surface of the supports 5. The feeding arms In each have a projecting pin or guide 23 extending outwardly from the forward end thereof which is engaged in an oval aperture 22 formed centrally of a bracket 22a mountedon each support 5. Thejoints 9, 9 are adjustable by means of two bolts 2| and 24 threaded into the bracket 22a at opposite sides of the aperture 22.- -By this construction it is possible to limit on each of said support carriages and arranged to engage the adjacent edge portion of said material, and a loose connection between each of .said feed arms and adjacent support carriages providing limited freedom of lateral movement of each feed arm relative to said adjacent support carriage so that lateral movement of the feed arms withinthe limits of said loose-connections is not imparted to the adjacent support 2. In apparatus for guiding web-like material comprising, a pair of feed arms pivotallymounted for independent lateral movement, a support carriage mounted endwise adjacent eachfeed arm for movement in opposite directions transversely of the direction of travel of the -material, straightening means for the edges of the material comprising groups of drive rolls mounted on each of said support carriages and arranged to engage theadjacent edge portion of said material, control means engageable, by the opposite side edges of the material for effecting lateral movement of said feed arms in response to variations in the transverse position; of the edges of said material, and a loose connection between eachof said feed arms and adjacent support carriages providing limited freedom of lateral'movement of each feed arm relative to said adjacent support carriage so that lateral movement of the feed arms Within the limits of said loose connections is not imparted to the ad: jacent support.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the loose connection between each feed arm and support carriage comprises a projecting element carried by one of said members and a ring element of greater lateral dimension than said projecting element carried by the other member, the said projecting element-having its end portion extending freely into the ring element, and said ring-having therein elements selectively adjustable to predeterminedly limit freedom of lateral movement of the projecting element within the ring element.
