(Cl. 2-132) 1 o p This invention relates to holder devices for collars and concerns more particularly aholder and: brace combination for application tosoft, unstarched and like neckwear of shirts and other apparel. Referring now more particularly to the attached drawing; there is shown in Figs. 1 to 3 a combination holder and bracing device ID for collars or similar neckwear of Wearing apparel. Device l0 consists mainly of the front barll having the lateral rounded ends I2 and I3" which are adapted to'extend above the side edges 'of the collar-and below the necktiej rear bar i l and loop [5 which connects rear bar M to front bar H in a manner well known in the art. Attached to ends I6, 11, as by soldering, are respective braces or stiffening strips I8, [9 of particular shape and formation. E ach of the braces has a rearwardly bent curved middle lug ZGQfurther a rearwardly bent upper projection 21, and a forwardly directed lower projection 22 for a purpose later described. l

Figs. 4 .and 5 illustrates device 30 which is.
somewhat similar to that ofFig. 1. Front bar 3! has the'rounded lateral edges 32, 33 and is 3 connected to rear bar 35 by means of a loop 34. Rear bar 35 is somewhat longer than front bar 3| and carries two spaced apart eyelets 36, 3'! to which are pivotally connected braces 38, 39, respectively.
These braces consist of upper portions 38a, 39a and lower portions 38b, 391), which are adapted to be swung into any angular position toward each other and with respect to the rear bar 35. In folded condition (Fig. portions 3%, 397) may overlap the "folded portions 38d, 3%. If it is desired to use only the lower portions 38b, 39b to brace the collar, then the upper swingable por tions 38a and 33a may be swung into alignment and behind the rear bar or element 35, as will be easily understood.
This combination collar holder and bracingdevice 30 has the advantage of b'eihg easily adapted for application to a collar in any position or the front bar, so that if the front bar is attached to the collar edges at a lower position, the lower portions 38b, 33b may be swung into inoperative position and into alignment with rear bar whereas only the upper "brace portions 380., 33a are employed for holding the collar in desired shape.
Fig. 6 illustrates a further-modified form of of a device combining the collar holder with lateral braces. In this instance, the device 43 is provided with a rear bar 4| which carries front bar portions 42 and 43. Thesefront bar portions are retained on a carrier 44 which in turn is fixed .to the rear bar 4| by means of rivets-45. A leaf spring 43 engaging the adjacent ends of bar portions 42, 43 is firmly held on carrier '44 by means of lugs or clamps 47 43 and lateral prongs 49, 50. Thus, the loop-shaped ends 4241 of bar portion 42 and loop-shaped end 43a of bar portion 43 will be pressedby means :of spring 46 so that the outer ends of bar portions 42 and 43 wil-lbe urged against the adjacent endsofrear bar 4 l Rear-bar 4| is slotted at 5 3 and 54 for the insertion and removal therefrom of adjustable braces 60, which'are shown in-greater-detail Figs. 8, 8a and 81). Each adjustable brace 60 consists of two relativelymovableparts 6| and 62 (Fig. 8a). Eyelets 63 and 64 are arranged at the free ends am, 62a which carry pins 5, 66 for the purpose of engaging the inner face of the collar sides to brace the same. It well understood that similar pins may be provide'd at the ends of braces l8, l9 of Fig. i and 38,, 39 of Both brace portions SI, 62 are preferably 'made fromsheet material, such as metal or plastic material a'ndterminate, respectively, into loopshaped ends 61,38 which extend at opposite sides of braces 6|, -62, as is Well apparent from Fig. .821.
At opposite side edges of brace portions 6| and 62, there is provided a plurality of notches 569, 10, each notch being so shaped that lateral loop ends 61 and 68 are adapted to respectively engage respective notch ends 6.9a, 10d, whereby relative movement of the brace portions '5! and 62 in downward direction (arrow A) and in upward direction (arrow B) may be effectively stopped. H
Between the loop ends -68, 61 "and preferably on brace portion 62, there is arranged a knob 1|. Each knob has .a stern 1'5 and. ahead T6. Each of the slots 53, 54 has an enlarged end opening 12 for the insertion of knob "H of the braces 60. Knob II is somewhat smaller in diameter than opening 12 so as to facilitate this insertion. This has been indicated at the right hand brace 60, shown in dot-dash lines of Fig. 6. After the insertion of knob ll within opening 12, the brace may be slid along slot 53 and/or 54 to a position for the engagement of stem 15 with respective rests or stops l3, 14. Heads 16 or knobs 1| will prevent the detachment of braces 60 from rear bar 4| but will permit a swinging movement of braces 60 within respective rest portions l3, 14 with "respect to each other as well as to the holder bars 4| 42, 43.
It will be easily realized that the length of the braces 60 may be readily adjusted and their angular positions to each other may be easily P changed to conform the device 40 to the particular style and shape of the collar to which the device may be applied.
It is further well understood that the adjustable braces 60 may be also employed without the collar holder proper 4|, '42, 43, with which they may be rapidly coupled, if desired.
It goes without saying, that other means for adjusting the length. of braces 33 and for looking the same in their adjusted position, explained as herein above, may be employed, it being also understood that pins 65, 36, which are offset with respect to the ends fila, 62a, may be rotated by means of eyelets G3, 64 to desired positions.
It will be observed that for the purpose of application of the collar holder the latter will be inserted between rounded ends I2, |3 of front bar and the respective median straight portions of braces I8, I!) (Fig. 1). Similarly, according to Fig. 5, the collar will be gripped between rounded ends 32, 33 of front bar 3| and the free lateral ends of rear bar 35. In the example of Fig. 7., the side edges of the collar will be clamped between rear bar 4| and front bar portions 42, 43 (Fig. '7), whereby these side edges of the collar are retained in position. The length of each of the braces l8, IQ of holder device ill of Fig. 1 is greater than the distance between the inner edges of said braces l8, l9 at the location of said front bar I I. These braces are converging from below bar thereabove and are preferably made of pliable and bendable material so as to conform the shape of said braces (ends 20, '21, 22.) to the particular style and shapeof a collar. Besides this, braces 38, 39 of device 30 are movably and 'swingably arranged with respect 'to front and rear bars 3|, 35 in order to facilitate folding away of any of the wing or brace parts 336:, 3871,3904, 3922, if not needed. Device 40 according to the embodiment of Figs. 6 and '7 has the further advantage over the aforesaid holder devices in that device 43 may be selectively coupled with braces 60 which may be disposed in any angular position and may be extended or shortened in length with respect to holder elements 4|, 42, 43, so as to afford adjustability and-co'nformability of device 40 to a great variety of collar shapes.
It will now become clear that there has been provided according to this invention a device for attachment to soft collars of wearing apparel comprising a clamping member, said member being provided with a front bar and with a rear bar, means springedly connecting said front bar to said rear bar so that the lateral ends of said bars engage each other, respectively, and brace elements arranged for swinging movement on said rear bar and reaching in extended position and in crosswise direction to said rear bar thereabove and therebelow, said brace elements being foldable in collapsed position thereof on said rear bar whereby said brace elements in position on said collar bear against the face of the collar opposite to the face of the latter which is engaged by said front bar.
As many possible embodiments may be made of the above invention, and as many changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matters hereinbefore disclosed or shown in the accompanying drawing are to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device for application to a soft collar of wearing apparel for stiffening said collar and for holding in place adjacent side edges thereof, comprising a substantially horizontal clamping member adapted to extend across and in contact with the outer face of said side edges, brace elements coupled to and disposed for swinging movement with respect to said member, and pivot means on each brace element, said clamping member including means cooperating with said pivot means to detachably couple the respective brace elements to said clamping member, said brace elements in applied position extending in a direction along said side edges of said collar and bearing against the inner face of said side edges.
2. A device for application to a soft collar of a shirt or similar apparel for stiffening said collar and for holding together the side edges of the latter, comprising a clamping member, said member being provided with a front bar and with a rear bar, means springedly connecting said front bar to said rear bar so that the lateral ends of said bars engage each other, respectively, said rear bar being provided with longitudinal slots, said front bar in applied condition of said members extending across the outer face of said side edges, spaced apart brace elements received in said slots for attachment to said rear bar, said brace elements being adapted to move relative to each other and lengthwise of said slots, and. means on said brace elements for adjusting the length thereof, whereby said brace elements are adjustable in lengthwise direction thereof and extend in applied condition of said member in contact with and in the direction substantially along said collar edges and bear against the in ner faces of the latter.
