1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in fluid actuated apparatus, and more particularly to the 'type of apparatus which is adapted for use on tractors or the like having fluid pressure supply means.
An object of the present invention is to provide a device which will actuate a plurality of types of tools and which can be moved to a multiplici'ty of positions.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device wherein a tool may be moved to any desired position by selectively opera-ting preselected of a plurality of control valves in the fluid pressure system.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a tool actuating means which is adapted to operate various types of tools necessitating pivoting movement in their operation.
This invention also has for its objects to provide a fluid actuated apparatus which is positive in operation, convenient in use, easily mounted on a tractor or the like and easily disconnected therefrom, economical of manufacture, and of relative simplicity.
The means by which the objects of the present invention are accomplished include a frame which is adapted to be mounted on a tractor, a plurality of fluid cylinders hingedly mounted on the frame, a plunger in each of the cylinders, the outer ends of each of the plungers hingedly connected together forming a hinged joint, fluid pressure conduits connected to opposite ends of the cylinders, a source of fluid pressure for the fluid pressure conduits, and control valves in the fluid conduits for controlling the fluid pressure supply to the conduits whereby pressure may be selectively supplied to preselected of the cylinders effecting universal movement of the hinge joint.
Various other objects and advantages will become apparent from the detailed description to follow. In the description as well as in the claims, parts are at times identified by speciflc names for convenience, but such nomenclature is intended to be as generic in its application to analogous parts as the prior art will permit.
The best form in which I have contemplated applying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 5 shows the details of the fluid pressure actuating system.
Looking more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout, numeral l6 designates generally the fluid pressure actuated apparatus of the present invention, numeral l2 designates generally, a tractor or similar vehicle, and numeral l4designates generally a tool which may be employed in combination with the present invention. 4
Th fluid pressure actuated apparatus HI includes a frame lfi mounted on the tractor l2, the combination of fluid actuated cylinder and plungerarrangements connected together and mounted on the frame l6,pand a fluid pressure control system 26.
The frame l6 includes a base 24 supported by the axle housing 22on the tractor I2 by means of the U-shaped elements 26 having nuts 28 on their threaded ends engaging the flanges 30 of the base. A pair of upstanding members 32 and 34 are hingedly secured to the base 24, including elements 36 and 38. Theupper and lower ends of the upstanding elements 32 and 34 are connected by cross elements 31 and 40. The forward ends of the base 24 are adjustably connected to the upper ends of the upstanding elements 32 and 34 by means of telescoping adjusting members 46 and 48. The lower female ends 50 and 52 on the telescoping members 46 and 48 are hingedly connected to the base 24 at 42 and 44 and hingedly connected to the upstanding elements 32 and 34 at 54 and 56 by means of the inner male elements 58 and 60. The male and female members 46, 58 and 48, 60 are held in adjusted relation by means of the pins 62 and 64 mounted in the members 50 and 52 and engaging the apertures 66 and 68.
In order to give adjustability to the entire frame, the base 24 may b made longitudinally adjustable, or as shown, the tilting frame 32, 34, 31 and 40 may be hingedly connected at 38 to the base 24. With this arrangement, the frame may be easily mounted on tractorsof varying size and easily disconnected therefrom.
As seen best in Figures 1 and 2, the fluid actuated pressure cylinder and plunger combination l8 include a plurality of major cylinders l8, l2 and 14, a secondary cylinder 16 pivotally mounted on the cylinder I2, and a tool actuating cylinder 18 mounted on the secondary cylinder 16 and hinge joint 80.
The cylinders I0 and 14 are provided with bifurcated ends 82 and 84 for hingedly connecting the cylinders to the pivot elements 88 and 88 mounted at the upper ends of the upstanding elements 32 and 84. The other primary cylinder 12 is similarly provided with a bifurcated end 90 for connection to the hinge member 92 centrally mounted on the bottom element 31 of the tilting frame 32, 34, 31 and 40.
As seen best in Figure 1, each of the cylinders 70, I2 and I4 is provided with a plunger 94, 96, or 98, and all of the plunger elements 94, 96 and 88 are hingedly connected together forming a hinge joint at B0. The plunger 94 is provided with a flat apertured end I00, and the plunger 88 is provided with a flat apertured end I04. The plunger 96 is provided with a 30 (fil ree) flat apertured end I02. A bracket I06 is provided with a bifurcated portion I08 receiving the flat end I02 and the two flat ends I and I04 at; positioned on the base III) of the bracket I06. All of the flattened ends I00, I02, and I04, are hingedly connected together by means of the bracket I and bolts IIZ passing through the apertures of the flattened ends and Secured therein by means of nuts II 4.
The secondary cylinder is hingedly connected to the primary cylinder I2 by means of a split bracket H5 secured on the cylinder by means of bolts H8 and nuts I20.
The tool actuating cylinder 18 is hingedly connected to the hinge joint 80 by means of the bifurcated jack I 22 secured to the upper end of the cylinder 18,. The secondary cylinder 16 has its plunger I 24 connected to the tool actuating cy i der 18 by means of the band I28 and nuts I29 holdin the hand I t0 the plunger I24.
The tool [4 includes a pair of bucket members I30 and I32 hingedly connected to bars I34 and I36 which are in turn hingedly connected to the bracket I 38 which is mounted on the cylinder 18 intermediate its ends. Each of the buckets I30 and I02 has a flat oar I40 or I42 rigidly secured thereto and hingedly connected to the plunger I44 of the tool actuating cylinder 18.
The fluid pressure control system 20 includes a plurality of control valves I40, I48, l50, I52 and I54 each having conduits connected to a common source of pressure I55 which may be supplied with pressure from the tractor.
It is believed that from the foregoing description taken in cQ Jl lJ-nction with the drawings, the operation of the present invention will readily be apparent to one skilled in the art. By selectively operating a preselected control valve or control valves, preselected of the actuating cylinders are actuated, either extending or retracting the plungers mounted therein, effecting universal movement of the hinge joint and the tool operating cylinder 78. It will also be seen that by controlling the valve I46 the plunger I44 of the tool actuating cylinder '18 may be extended or retracted effecting opening and closing of the buckets I30 and I32 for obvious purposes.
By operating the valves I50 and I52, the plungers in the cylinders I0 and I4 are actuated causing the hinge joint 80 to be moved either to the left or to the right as desired. Actuation of the 6 control valve I48 effects upward and downward movement of the hinge joint 80, the hinge joint pivoting about the hinge connections at 82 and 84. By means of the control valves I48, I50 and I52, the hinge joint 80 may readily be moved in any desired direction. If it is desired to pivot the tool I4 with respect to the hinge joint 80, the control valve I54 is actuated supplying pressure to the pressure cylinder I6 pivoting the cylinder I8 with respect to the hinge joint 80. As hereinabove described, the tool actuating cylinder I8 is actuated by the control valve I46.
In operation, the tool I4 may be reciprocated with respect to the ground, pivoted with respect to the ground or rotated with respect to the ground. and the bucket members I30 and I32 may be opened with respect to each other at any desired time before digging or other operations.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
It should be further noted that the term fluid" wherever used is to be interpreted in its broadest sense, that is, as defining any medium that may be placed under pressure and employed in a pressure actuating system.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A fluid actuated tool carrying apparatus comprising a frame adjustably mounted on a vehicle, three fluid cylinders hingedly mounted on said frame in spaced apart relation, a plunger in each of said cylinders, the outer ends of said plungers being connected to a common hinge joint, a. tool support mounted on said common hinge joint, a fourth cylinder, a plunger in said fourth cylinder, said fourth cylinder and plunger being connected between said tool support and one of said three cylinders, a source of fluid pressure, fluid conduits connected to each end of each cylinder, a control valve for each cylinder, said control valves selectively applying fluid to said cylinders to. con rol sa ool s pp r FRANK L.
