Between the forward ends of the inclined edges I8 and the rear end of the slot I9 are formed a pair of outwardly extending notches 20. The metal from the notches are pressed upwardly to form `a pair of vertical upwardly extending spaced parallel lugs 2l for the purpose hereinafter appearing.

The top part I2 comprises a flat intermediate portion 25 from which extend forwardly a pair of yspaced coplanar fingers 26 adapted to overlie the 3 wardly from portion 25 is a downwardly and then upwardly curved transverse portion 28 from which there extends upwardly and rearwardly a sharply inclined handle portion 29. The bottom of the curved portion 28 contacts the top of the bottom part II between the handle I6 and the flat portion I3 and on opposite sides of the lugs 2 I.

The portion 28 of the top part I2 is formed with a transverse slot 30 and the handle 2K9 is formed with a keystone shaped opening 3I communicating with the slot 30. At the ends of the slot 30 lare formed notches 32 in which are received the upwardly extending lugs 2|. The forward `tip or end IIa of the spring tongue I1 contacts portion 25 of the top part just forwardly of the slot 30 to keep the ends of fingers I4, 26 in contact. The lugs 2I prevent the top part from moving forwardly or rearwardly or sideways relative to the bottom part. The spring tongue I1 prevents `the top part from moving upwardly away from the bottom part. However, when the handles I6, 29 are pressed together, the fingers 26 which constitute an upper jaw for the clamp or clip move away from the lower fingers I4 which constitute the lower jaw of the clamp or clip.

It will be noted that the parts may be assembled together by merely lifting the spring tongue,

I1 of the lower part and inserting the top part in place on the lower part so that the lugs 2| pass through or fit into the notches 32. It will be further noted that when the handle 29 is pressed toward the lower handle I6, the'upper jaw moves up yand down. The lower jaw has relatively little movement. As the lower jaw is concealed within the hair and is close to the scalp, there is less likelihood to scratch the scalp when these clips are used.

It will be further noted that nothingprojects down below the underside lower part I I which is smooth so that if the wearer goes to sleep, the scalp will not be hurt and the clips may be worn with comfort.

It will also be noted that when the handles are pressed together and the upper jaw moves up, the spring tongue I'I is tensioned so that when the handles are released, the spring tongue willy close the jaws to grip the hair.

In Figs. 8 and 9 there is shown a clip Ia embodying the invention substantially similar to the clip I0, with the exception that the lower part IIa has a single jaw linger I 4a and the upper part I2a has a single jaw finger 26a. Furthermore, the upper jaw has downwardly curved ridges 40 at intermediate portions thereof and upwar-dly curved ridges 4I near its forward tip 42. Otherwise the two clips are the same.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made 'of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

l. A hair clip comprising a lower part and an upper part, each made of a single piece of sheet metal, the lower part comprising an intermediate portion, and a flat jaw extending forwardly therefrom, and a handle extending rearwardly therefrom and slightly inclined upwardly, said intermediate portion and handle being formed with an opening, and the metal from said opening forming an upwardly and forwardly curved spring tongue with the free end of the tongue extending downwardly, said opening being formed with opposite notches and the metal from the notches extending upwardly to form a pair of parallel spaced lugs at opposite sides of said spring tongue, the upper part having an intermediate portion from which extend forwardly a jaw inclined downwardly so that the forward ends of the two jaws contact, a portion curved downwardly from said intermediate portion and contacting the upper side of the intermediate portion of the lower part, a handle sharply inclined upwardly and rearwardly and extending from said downwardly curved portion, said downwardly curved portion being formed with transverse slots forming a pair of notches, and 'said lugs projecting upwardly through said notches, and said handle of the upper part being formed with an opening communicating with said transverse slot, and said spring tongue passing through said opening in the handle of the upper part, and the free end of said spring tongue pressing downwardly against the intermediate portion of the upper part to normally close said jaws, whereby pressure of the handles toward each other will cause the jaw of the upper part to move away from the jaw of the lower part and thereby to tension the spring tongue.

2. The combination of claim 1, said jaws each comprising a pair of spaced parallel coplanar fingers formed with longitudinal slots.

3. The combination of claim 2, the fingers of the upper jaw being interconnected by a transverse brace portion.
