This invention relates to a reversible front member for cuff links.

One object of the invention is to provide a cuff link having a reversible front member carrying contrasting colors or other differing design characteristics on its inner and outer faces to be presented to view, interchangeably, as may be desired by the wearer.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cuff link including a reversible front member composed of an ornamental metal or other element carrying against one face thereof a stone or other element of substantially the same shape as the shape of the metal element and having different color or design from that of the ornamental metal element.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a cuff link including a reversible front member carrying contrasting colors or designs on opposite faces thereof and in which the reversible front member is frictionally and releasably held in the selected positions of reversal.

A further object of the invention is toprovide a cuff link provided with a reversible front member having differing ornamental characteristics on the inner and outer surfaces thereof for exposure to view, interchangeably, and thereby providing in the one cuff link a front member capable of manipulation to provide, in use, a tWo-in-one ornamental cuff link.

It is still further designed to provide a reversible front member fora cuff link carrying differing ornamental characteristics on the inner and outer faces thereof for interchangeable positioning to view on the wearer.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the reference character if! indicates, generally, the new cuff link including a suitable shank indicated, generally, by the reference character 1!, and the reversible front member indicated, generally, at l2, and the rear member, in this instance, a pivoted bar i l, the essential feature of the invention being the reversible front member carrying differing coloring or other differing ornamental characteristics on its inner and outer surfaces for view or display interchangeably, thereby creating a twoin-one cuff link.

The shank l i is illustrated as composed mainly of a short stem 15 and an aligning, substantially U-shaped element, both riveted rigidly together and the latter including spaced legs it and an inner connecting bight portion H. The legs l6 preferably converge slightly to the rear of the cuff link and they are slightly resilient and at their free ends said rear member or bar M is pivoted on a suitable pivot l8 so that the bar l4 may swing inwardly between said legs in the plane of the axis of the shank or laterally of the shank at the rear end thereof and concealed. from view behind the wearers sleeve cufi. The

arrow in Figure 4 indicates one direction of movement of the bar [4 on its pivot and obviously the said bar may be swung on its pivot in the opposite direction.

To hold the inner rear member or bar I4 in adjusted positions, a friction holding means is provided in the form of sets of protuberances l9 formed on the inner faces of each of the legs I6 adjacent said pivot 18 for coaction with similarly arranged sets of sockets it formed on opposite sides of the rear member or bar I l. The

slight resiliency of the legs coacting with said sets of protuberances and said sets of sockets releasably maintain the rear member or bar M in adjusted positions.

Ihe aforesaid short stem I5 has its inner end,

riveted at 20 or otherwise secured in an aperture 2| in the bight portion ll of the said U-shaped portion of the shank, there being a small stop plate 22 fixedon said stemand resting on said ber would not become lost, it being tied in with the link.

This application'contains claims broadly covering reversible cuff link constructions disclosed in application, Serial No. 111,917, filed August 23, 1949, and application, Serial No. 112,979, filed August 29, 1949, the two latter cases disclosing modifled forms of the reversible front member and means for releasably holding the same with either side face thereof disposed outwardly to view. The modified forms of the invention shown in the cases referred to are not disclosed in the present case. r

The present new and novel cuff link provides a permanently two-in-one cuff link for use by a wearer, enabling him to expose outwardly either of two ornamental front member surfaces as may be desired without separating the front member from the cuff link, as stated herein, and if desired, without removing the cuff link from the wearers shirt cuff.

What is claimed is: 1

1. A reversible cuff link, including a shank having means at one end thereof for releasably retaining the cuff link in a cuff link opening, a head member secured to the other end of the shank and having parallel sides, a reversible front ornamental characteristics on its inner and outer u faces and provided with a recess having parallel sides paralleling said parallel sides of said head member when the front member is positioned ineither of its reversed positions on said head, and releasable, frictional, interengaging elements carried by the head and the front member to hold the latter in either of said positions on said head.

2. A cuff link including a shank, an elongated head on one end of the shank rigidly secured thereto, and a front member having inner and outer faces of differing ornamental chaarcter, said front member having an elongated recess extending inwardly from one end thereof corresponding substantially in size to said head to receive the latter therein, said front member at a point substantially centrally of the ends of said recess being pivotally connected to the head intermediate the ends of the head with the side walls of said recess straddling the head and providing for pivotal movement of the front member on the head to interchangeably position the front member disposed at substantially a right angle to the shank with either its inner or its outer side face disposed outwardly to view and extending substantially flush with the outer face of said head, and means for releasably holding the front member in either of said positions.

A cuff link including a shank having a head at one end thereof, and a front member having inner and outer faces upon which different ornamentation can be applied, said front member having an open-ended recess formed therein substantially complementary in shap and size to said head, said front member being pivotally carried by said head and movable to either of two positions substantially perpendicular to the axis of the shank with either of the inner and outer faces disposed outwardly to view, and means for releasably holding the front member in either of said positions.

A cuff link including a, shank having an enlarged head rigidly secured to one end thereof, a front member having inner and outer faces upon which different ornamentation can be applied, said front member having a recess open 6. at one end formed therein substantially complementary in shape and size to said head, said front member being non-removably pivotally carried by saidhead and movable to either of two positions substantially perpendicular to the axis of the shank with either of the inner and outer faces disposed outwardly to view, and means for releasably holding the frontmember in either of said positions.

5. A cuff link including a shank having an enlarged head rigidly secured to one end thereof, a front member having inner and outer faces upon which different ornamentation can be applied, said front member having a recess open at one end formed therein substantially complementary in shape and size to said head, said front member being pivotally carried by said head and movable to either of two positions substantially perpendicular to the axis of the shank with either of the inner and outer faces disposed outwardly to view, said head having arcuate end surfaces to permit close cooperation with the pivotal front member, and means for releasably holding the front member in either of said positions.v 1

6. A cuff link including a shank having an enlarged head rigidly secured to one end thereof, and a front member having inner and outer faces upon which faces different ornamentation is applied, said front member having an open-ended recess formed therein substantially complementary in shape and size to said head, said front member being pivotally carried by said head and movable to either of two positions substantially perpendicular to the axis of the shank with either of the inner and outer faces disposed outwardly to view and opposing wall portions of said recess in the front member and juxtaposed wall portions of the head being formed with projections and indentations for releasably holding said front member in either of said positions.

A cuff link including a shank having an enlarged head rigidly secured to one end thereof, and a front member having inner and outer faces upon which different ornamentation can be applied, said front member having an open-ended recess formed therein substantially complementary in shape and size to said head, said front member being pivotally carried by said head and movable to either of two positions substantially perpendicular to the axis of the shank with either of the inner and outer faces disposed outwardly to view and opposing walls of said recess in the front member and juxtaposed faces of the head being formed with projections and indentations for releasably holding said front member in either of said positions, said projections and indentations being located remotely from the pivotal axis of said front member.
