Application March 17, 1952, Serial N 0. 276,976 (Cl. 190-52) 1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in luggage, and more particularly to a travel case constructed to provide individual compartments for holding hats, shoes, bedroom slippers and similar articles of apparel separated from each other to prevent crushing or soiling of the articles during handling of the case.
An important object of the invention is to partition the interior of the case to form a plurality of compartments therein and including a pair of compartments at the sides of the case shaped for closely fitting a shoe therein in an edgewise position, while the partitions further form a central compartment to receive the crown of a hat with its brim resting on and supported by the means presently described; and further to construct the partitions to form a relatively narrow, transversely extending compartment at the front of the case to hold bedroom slippers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lid for the top of the case to afford access to the shoe and hat compartments and a downwardly swinging door at the front of the case to afford access to the slipper compartment.
A further object is to provide the shoe and slipper compartment with straps which are fixed in the compartment and adapted to hold the respective articles from movement therein.
' A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the lid and door in open position;
Figure 2 is a top plan view with the lid open;
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3-3 and 4--4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified case construction with the lid and door shown closed.
Referring now to the drawings in detail,
wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a substantially box-like case generally which may be constructed of suitable material, such as light-weight wood or the like, and including a hinged lid 6 closing 2 the top of the case and supported in a raised position by a folding brace I. The front of the case is provided with a door 8 which is hinged at its lower edge to swing downwardly into an open position, as shown in, Figure l of thedrawing.
A pair of partitions 9 are cemented or otherwise suitably secured in the case in spaced paral-- lel relation to each other to extend from the rear wall Hi to a transverse partition ll positioned behind the door 8 in spaced relation therefrom. The partitions 9 are inclined with respect to the side walls of the case to form a pair of side compartments l2 and I3, each having a narrow end and a relatively wide end, and a central compartment I4. The transverse partition ll forms a front compartment 15.
'The compartments I2 and [3 are shaped to snugly receive a shoe l6 when placed on its side in the compartment and with the toe of the shoe positioned in the narrower end of the compartment and with the heel of the shoe positioned in the wide end of the compartment, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, while the front compartment I5 is adapted to receive a pair of soft bedroom slippers I1. Each of the compartments l2, l3 and I5 is provided with aleather or other suitable strap 18 which is riveted or otherwise suitably anchored inside the compartment and adapted to hold the article from movement therein.
A rear shelf [9 is cemented or otherwise suitably secured on the upper rear edge of the partitions 9 and a front transverse shelf 20 is similarly secured on the upper front edges of the partitions 9 and on which the brim 2| of a hat is adapted to rest while the crown of the hat is positioned between the partitions 9 in the compartment [4. The shelf 20 fits in said member 5 between the sides of said member and thereby forms a means supplementing the cement for holding the partitions 9 in place. i
A suitable fastener 22 at the front edge of the lid 6 and at the upper edge of the door 8 mutually holds the lid and door in a closed position.
When the lid 6 is raised into its open position. as shown in Figure l of the drawing, access is afforded to the central and side compartments I2, l3 and [4 for placing the articles therein and removing the same therefrom, and by swinging the door 8 downwardly, access is afforded to the front compartment [5.
The case 5, constructed as shown in Figures 1 luggage, or otherwise carried, while in Figure 5 I have illustrated a case 23 finished as a piece of luggage and provided with a handle 24.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, What claimed as new is:
An apparel case comprising a box-like member, a door closing the front of the case, a lid closing the top of the case, a pair of spaced apart parallel partitions in the case inclined with respect to the sides of the case to form a pair of side compartments and a central compartment, each of said side compartments having a relatively narrow end and a relatively wide end adapted to substantially conform to a shoe placed on its side in the compartment, a strap fixed in each of said side compartments and adapted to embrace the shoe contained therein, and front and rear shelves fixed on top of said pair of partitions spaced apart to support the brim of an inverted hat and accommodate therebetween the crown of the hat positioned in the central compartment, at leastone of said shelves fitting in said member between the sides of the member and forming a means holding the partitions in place.
