The bail member is then released to pivot back to its original position, the cover 6 closed, and the machine is in readiness for use, with certain dies [4 inactivated in accordance with the desired punching pattern.
Should it be desired to punch holes instead of notches, or to punch notches of greater or lesser depth or of different shape, the machine is easily modified to fulfill the new requirements merely by substituting new male dies of the proper configuration. Such interchange of dies is facilitated by reason of the fact that the dies 14 are slidable along the shaft l2, being held in proper spaced relationship by the combs 48 and 5| and by the die plate l5. Merely by loosening the set screws 21 in the operating levers 2E, and knocking out the shaft l2, the dies l4 may be removed and replaced.
It will thus be seen that a gang punch is provided which is simple of design and in operation, which is effective to punch a large number of holes or notches in one or more cards or the like, and which is easily adjustable to inactivate any of the individual male punching dies and to interchange sets of male dies.
' While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in its construction by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and des re to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A gang punch including a shaft, a plurality of punching members rotatably mounted on said shaft, each member having a notched portion, an operating lever mounted on said shaft for pivotal movement about the axis thereof, and an actuating member carried by the lever and engaging the notched portions on the members for causing movement of said members to and from an operative position, said actuating member being pivotally mounted on the lever for movement away from and toward said punching members whereby when said actuating member is moved away from said punching members, said punch ing members may be rotated to such a position that said actuating member will not engage said notched portions when said member is moved toward said members.
' 2. A gang punch including a shaft, a plurality of punching members rotatably mounted on said shaft, eachmember having a notched portion, an operating lever mounted on said shaft for pivotal movement about the axis thereof, an-actuating member carried by the lever and engaging the notched portions on the members for causing movement of said membersto and from an operative position, said actuating member pivotally mounted on the lever for movement away from the notched portions of the punching members, whereby the punching members can be rotated to such a position that when said actuating member is moved back toward said punching members it will not engage said notched portions, and resilient means constantly urging said actuating member toward said punching members.
3. A gang punch including a shaft, a plurality of punching members rotatably mounted on said shaft, an operating lever mounted for pivotal movement, and an actuating member carried by the lever for causing movement of said punching members to and from an operative position, said actuating member and said punching members having interengaging portions establishing a driving connection between the actuating memher and said punching members, said actuating member being pivotally mounted on the lever for movement away from said punching members, whereby when said actuating member is moved away from said punching members said members may be rotated to such a position that when said actuating member is moved back toward said members said interengagng portions will be out of registry and said members will not be actuated by the actuating member.
4. A gang punch including a shaft, a plurality of punching members rotatably mounted on said shaft, an operating lever mounted for pivotal movement, an actuating member carried by the lever for causing movement of said punching members to and from an operative position, said actuating member and said punching members having interengaging portions establishing a driving connection between, the actuating member and said punching members, said actuating member being pivotally mounted on the lever for movement away from said punching members, whereby when said actuating member is moved away from said punching members said members may be rotated to such a position that when said actuating member is moved back toward said members said interengaging portions will be out of registry and said members will not be actuated by the actuating member, and resilient means constantly urging said actuating member toward said punching members.
5. A card punching device comprising a frame having a female die plate, a shaft supported by said frame, a plurality of male die punching members rotatably mounted on said shaft, an operating lever pivotally mounted on said frame, an actuating member mounted on said lever for causing movement of said punching members to and from an operative position when said operating lever is actuated, said actuating member and said punching members having interengaging portions establishing a driving connection between the actuating member and said punching members, said actuating member being movably mounted on said lever for movement away from said punching members, whereby when said actuating member is so moved, said punching members may be rotated to such a position that when said actuating member is moved back toward said punching members said interengaging portions will be out of registry and said punching members will not be actuated upon actuation of said operating lever, and yieldable means constantly urging said actuating member toward said punching members.
